Wyclef Jean Hopes to Make Amends With Canadian Fans Soon

Posted by andPOP Staff on October 24th, 2007

Snubbing a couple thousand fans in Toronto this summer after failing to make an appearance at a hip-hop festival (as only andPOP reported), Wyclef Jean wanted to clear things up with his loyal Ontario crowd. However, the singer, made famous throughout his time with The Fugees, claims that although he is sorry, his absence was not his fault but rather his label’s.

“I never say I’m going to be somewhere and I don’t be there. I have one of my labels, Sak Pase Records, that is supposed to come to Toronto. Then they’re going to Montreal. So whoever it was doing it for Sak Pase came to New York and it’s not like he was like, ‘Man, you know the Toronto thing is happening.’ It was more like, you know, I kept it moving, I had to go to Japan,” Chartattack quoted the artist in saying.

Jean is about to put out a new album on December 4th entitled “The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant” and will hopefully schedule some performances in Canada.

“I got so many Canadian fans and I felt so bad because I rarely play in Canada. So if people hear that ‘Clef is gonna play in Canada, people come from all over freakin’ Canada.”

Wyclef Jean Blames Hill For Fugees Reunion Difficulties

Posted by andPOP Staff on August 5th, 2007

WYCLEF JEAN has blasted former bandmate LAURYN HILL for ruining any chance of a FUGEES reunion by demanding too much.

The three-piece – comprising Jean, Hill and Pras Michel – reunited briefly in 2004 and 2005 with a European tour and rumours of a new album in the works.

However, Jean insists a future collaboration is out of the question unless Hill changes her attitude and accepts her original role in the hip-hop group.

He says, “Lauryn is straight up the problem, bro. She wants to be a producer. Don’t come telling us how to chop up beats so you can get credit for it.

“If the Fugees wanna come back, and Lauryn wanna come back you can’t break the format. Don’t come back and be like, ‘I wanna produce a beat.’ That’s like me saying I wanna sing an R&B vocal.

“When we was working on the album, I was like, (to Lauryn), ‘You need to do this like this.’ (And) she says, ‘How do you know what’s relevant? I haven’t heard anything from you in the past like three, four years?’ The minute she said that I was like, ‘I gotta go back to working.’”

Michel has voiced the same concerns in the past, telling SOHH.com a Fugees reunion is “straight dead”. He too blamed Hill and “some issues she needs to deal with”.

The Fugees unofficially split in 1997 to pursue solo careers. (SH/WNWCHP/LJ)

Global Hip Hop Fest Ends on Sour Note With Wyclef No Show

Posted by Adam Gonshor on July 31st, 2007

A few thousand people promised an appearance by Grammy-winning Wyclef Jean at a free outdoor hip-hop festival in Toronto went home disappointed Saturday night when the rapper didn’t show up.

They weren’t so much disappointed that Jean was a no-show. What irked them was that they were kept in the dark.

“We thought he’d come on at the end. But after a few artists were on the stage for an hour, right at the end, they said Jean couldn’t make it,” Matt Jenkins of Toronto wrote in an email to andPOP.

Jean was supposed to appear at the Global Hip Hop Festival at Harbourfront to showcase artists from his label, Sak Pase Records.

After members of his label performed for an hour, one of them finally told the crowd that Jean wouldn’t be appearing because of problems at the border.

Turns out, organizers had already known Jean wouldn’t be attending and he didn’t have any border problems. He couldn’t have had border problems – he was on the other side of the world.

“Wyclef was asked to perform overseas with international superstar T.I.P. (T.I.) on that same weekend,” reads a statement from YB Entertainment Group, which had planned the Wyclef apeparance. “He recently voiced a track in collaboration for T.I.P album and the track toke [sic] off on the charts, so we were forced to reschedule the event as per request of [the] record label.”

A concert featuring Wyclef planned for the night before in Montreal was also cancelled.

“Had they said that at the beginning, that would be understandable, problems happen,” Jenkins said. “But they didn’t tell us he wasn’t coming until the very end. That was bush league. We all left disappointed because we had no idea he wasn’t going to show up.”

Jean is no stranger to Toronto. Last August, he performed with Shakira at the Air Canada Centre. The next month, he was in town for the Film Festival and performed at an after-party for his film, Ghosts of Cite Soleil. In November, he performed at a secret show to launch Playstation 3.

Fugees Surprise Performance at 2005 BET Awards

Posted by Michael Levine on June 28th, 2005

Last year, andPOP broke the news that the Fugees would be reuniting again in 2005. Tonight, we witnessed it as the Fugees performed on stage as the surprise act at the 2005 BET Awards Show.

Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill and Pras had fans out of their seats as they opened up tonight’s award ceremony.

The group sang old classics including: Ready or Not, Fu-Gee-La and Killing Me Softly.

Fans haven’t heard any new material from the group since 1996 when they released, The Score, the biggest selling hip-hop album of all time. It won two Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album and Best R&B Performance By A Duo or Group With Vocal, achieved platinum status 6x and sold more than 13,600,000 albums worldwide.

During the groups break, each member pursued a solo career, achieving many awards and setting new records including five Grammy Awards, and a combined 12x platinum.

A new Fugees album could appear in stores as soon as later this year.
