John Mayer Updates Fans

Posted by andPOP Staff on September 26th, 2011

John Mayer has cancelled shows and delayed his next album after announcing he has granuloma. Granuloma is an unflamed nodule near his vocal chords.

Born and Raised is complete as far as music recording, song selection, and in some cases mixing, but because of this condition I couldn’t finish singing on several of the tracks,” John wrote on his Tumblr page about his upcoming album.

“This means the record will be released next year instead of this fall or winter,” he added.

The Palmerston Group covers SXSW for andPOP

Posted by andPOP Staff on March 14th, 2011

Each spring eyes from all over the world converge on Austin to get a glimpse into the immediate future.

What started out as a regional new music fest has blossomed into an all-encompasing mass-media frenzy with a focus on emerging technologies and the ‘next big thing’.     There are now three primary areas of focus to the week:  Interactive, Film and Music.  Last year, for the first time ever, the interest and numbers for the Interactive conference were larger than any other part of the event.    We had to find out what was up.

Twitter famously got it’s big push into fame here at South By, and nowadays every startup with an unpronounceable name is competing for attention amongst the 15,000 geeks who invade the city for the first few days of what’s now merely referred to as “Interactive”.

Everyone wants to launch the next big thing.    This has caused a massive influx of what is now known as “marketing doucebaggery”.   Companies throw lavish invite-only parties with open bars and big name performers.   There are free rides and free lunches.   Companies hire models to roam the streets handing out knick knacks and doodads.

Some companies even bring in hired endorsers.   Enter Mike Tyson.    For two hours on Sunday afternoon, the former heavyweight champ preened for photos and signed autographs surrounded by tight-shirted models and well-armed security. The company that sponsored his attendance had their name plastered over every possible piece of surface within three blocks but I still cannot recall what it was.   None of this changed the fact that it was somewhat disturbing watching a convicted rapist being swooned over by eligible-looking willing-and-able females.

It all blends together in the end.   Sometimes the loudest way to get a message across is to whisper.

No one is whispering.

So far the highlight of the past few days has been a wonderful panel with Paul Reubens, the master comedian who’s more famously known as his Pee Wee Herman character.    He was extremely candid about his experiences, and provided some spectacular insight into his personality and the genesis of the Pee Wee figure.

“I went many years without being photographed out of character, well.. except that ONE time….”

Daniel Berkal leads the trendspotting team at The Palmerston Group, and will be mailing reports from Austin, Texas exclusively to andPOP throughout SXSW 2011.

Update: Chris Brown Shows No Shame

Posted by Emma Renda on August 27th, 2009

Chris BrownChris Brown should be having a bad day. In fact, he should be having a bad life considering the fire he has come under since he assaulted Rihanna in February. But despite his sentencing yesterday (five years probation, a restraining order from Rihanna, domestic violence courses, 6-months community service), and the release of the official police report from the incident (a brutal account of his relentless attack on Rihanna), Brown has still found time to dress up, hit the recording studio and party.

First, Brown was seen entering the Record Plant Recording Studio in L.A. yesterday shortly after his hearing. Pictures on TMZ.com show Brown had changed from his three-piece suit into a hip vest and oversized yellow heart broach. Not exactly non-chalant.

In the same outfit hours later, Brown was seen partying at Guys and Dolls in Hollywood. The photos on TMZ.com show Brown surrounded by several women – shockingly – and actually enjoying himself. This comes after a statement from the probation report in which Brown said he has been “depressed” since the February incident.

Ledger Update: Prescription Pills, Matilda’s Godparents and an Australian Burial

Posted by andPOP Staff on January 24th, 2008

Information is pouring in after Heath Ledger’s tragic death on Tuesday.

TMZ reports that five bottles of prescription pills were found in the apartment with Ledger’s body: three anti-anxiety medications (Xanax, Valium and Ativan) and two sleeping medications (Lunesta and Restoril). Restoril is used to treat “debilitating insomnia.” All of the bottles were prescribed to Ledger and were mostly full.

Ledger’s autopsy yesterday was inconclusive. It is still unclear whether his death was a suicide or accidental. However, “Four Feathers” director Shekhar Kapur told the UK Daily Telegraph that Ledger was excited to meet with him the next day, and asked Kapur to call and wake him in the morning.

“I had just arrived in New York [from London],” Kapur said. “He said he could not see me that night but really wanted to meet me the next day. He made me promise that I would call him in the morning and wake him up. I tried. Little did I know that his soul had already left his body.”

Ledger left behind 2-year-old daughter, Matilda. It now appears that Ledger’s “Brokeback Mountain” co-star, Jake Gyllenhaal, will be fulfilling his duties as godfather and aiding Michelle Williams in raising Matilda.

Gyllenhaal already has experience helping out with his niece, Ramona. Gyllenhaal’s sister, Maggie, is also a co-star and friend to Ledger, as she took over the role of Rachel Dawes in “The Dark Knight,” Ledger’s last completed film role.

Williams’ “Dawson’s Creek” co-star, Busy Philipps, is Matilda’s godmother. The Daily Telegraph reports that Philipps has already joined Williams in New York City.

Preparations are currently being made to move Ledger’s body back to Perth, Australia for burial.
