Selena Gomez will be hosting and performing at the 2011 VMAs, which airs live on Sunday, June 19 at 9 p.m. ET. That’s right, singer/songwriter/actress Selena Gomez is confirmed to co-host and perform at one of the hottest award shows of the year.
Gomez currently has more than 18 million Likes on her Facebook fan page and nearly five million Twitter followers. The rising star also took home Favorite TV Actress at the KIDS CHOICE AWARDS this year and her band, Selena Gomez & the Scene, won Favorite Breakout Artist at the PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS, beating heavyweights Justin Bieber and Ke$ha. So it’s no surprise the star will be the host – she’s a hot ticket!
With her band’s third studio album due out June 28, her latest film, Monte Carlo in theatres July 1, and her We Own The Night summer tour, Gomez is no doubtedly busy this summer. But the star is making some time for Canada, kicking off her busy summer up with a few thousand of her closest friends during the biggest street party in the world. This marks Gomez’s first trip to MuchMusic HQ and the MMVAs.
“I am thrilled and honoured to host the MuchMusic Video Awards,” said Gomez. “I look forward to seeing all my Canadian fans and kicking off the summer together.”
“Selena Gomez is a bona fide star,” adds Sheila Sullivan, Executive Producer, 2011 MUCHMUSIC VIDEO AWARDS. “Her films and TV show are seen around the world and her songs are topping the charts. Now she brings her signature smile to the MMVAs stage where her fans are guaranteed to welcome her to the most exciting and loudest award show on earth…don’t worry Selena, we supply earplugs.”
Past MMVAs performers and presenters include Drake, Ke$ha, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Nickelback, Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Kanye West and more, and this year is sure to be no different. Be sure to tune in!
Perhaps the show won’t be a bomb after all.
Charlie Sheen has announced via his Twitter account that Russell Peters will be joining him as a co-host for his two Toronto shows scheduled this weekend at Massey Hall.
“Anyone wanna guess who my co-host is for my 2 Toronto shows? 2 tix if you guess right! Hint: he’s one funny mother…. (you’ll love it!),” the former Two and a Half Men star tweeted.
“RUSSELL PETERS IS my co-host and guest for both Toronto shows yes!! We’ll see ya’ at the Meet & Greet!!”
While this is exciting news for Canadians, health officials will be watching the show to ensure the actor doesn’t violate the province’s anti-smoking laws.
In previous performances of his live show “My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat Is Not An Option”, Sheen has lit up cigarettes on stage.
Inspectors will be monitoring Sheen’s shows both on Thursday and Friday, according to Ontario Health Promotion Minister Margarett Best. She also offered the actor smoking cessation help, suggesting that he can call her directly or contact the province’s smokers’ quit line.
Hopefully Sheen obeys this law, as being cut off from funnyman Peters would surely disappoint. With his tour receiving plenty of negative reviews from his performance in Detroit, Sheen certainly needs to win over the Toronto crowd.
Courtney Love, oh I mean uh, Taylor Momsen’s band, The Pretty Reckless has announced tour dates for the United States and Canada.
Momsen has had a very interesting career in the short 17 years of her life. She went from playing the innocent Jenny Humphrey on Gossip Girl, to Jenny Humphrey the crazy gothic bitch who is banned from the Upper East Side by queen bee, Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester). It is funny that Momsen’s own life has imitated much of what has occurred to her onscreen. Momsen started acting at a very young age playing Cindy Lou Who in The Grinch. She was such an adorable child actress and now she has grown into a black-clad bondage beauty both on and off screen.
Now you have the chance to see Momsen in action. She is known for wearing some lovely lingerie and belting her heart out on stage. So why not go see The Pretty Reckless while on tour?
Looks like Selena Gomez isn’t the only teenybopper that can look forward to a full mailbox of death threats!
16-year-old heartthrob Justin Bieber was snapped making out with a female fan in Toronto a few months ago and the pictures are finally out. Apparently a tween watched the Biebs make out with her BFF and managed to catch the moment on her camera!
“Justin and my friend Michelle kissed behind the Four Seasons Hotel downtown a few months ago while he was in town for a concert,” the amateur photog said. “I didn’t feel right about releasing it before, but now it’s fine cuz it’s been a while.”
Ouch! Getting the cold bite of rejection from Justin Bieber is sucky enough, but to watch him make out with your best friend?! Girl’s gonna need HELLA therapy!
As reported by TheWrap.com, Twilight heartthrob, Robert Pattinson is set to star in Toronto filmmaker, David Cronenberg’s new film, Cosmopolis.
The film is said to be a study of capitalism in a slightly futuristic metropolis. The film will star Pattinson playing Eric Packer, a young financial genius and risk taker who stakes his entire fortune on a dangerous trading day. The decision turns ugly and he becomes a possible assassination target during a 24-hour adventure through Manhattan. The film will also star Marion Cotillard and Paul Giamatti.
Cronenberg can be seen walking the streets of Toronto. Does this mean that Pattinson may too be walking them soon? Cronenberg has filmed in Toronto for the majority of his movies like Videodrome and Crash. Toronto is often used as a New York City stand in, so perhaps he will stay in Toronto to film Cosmopolis. One can only hope.
However, we may see a certain increase of paparazzi and screaming 13-year-old girls running around Toronto if word does get out that Pattinson is in town.
JFK (Jesse F. Keeler) from MSTRKRFT is a world renowned DJ who has gained a huge and dedicated following. However JFK actually has rock roots, originally playing in a band called Death from Above 1979. Once that band ended, JFK partnered with AI-P and made MSTRKRFT their full time gig. We got a glimpse of life for JFK as he played an amazing show recently on Toronto Island.
Maybe Mos Def hasn’t got his teeth checked in awhile, but usually you have to give your dentist two days notice to cancel an appointment. This kind of rule applies to most fields of work too—you should just be nice and let people know if you can’t go ahead with something as planned.
As TMZ reports, apparently Mos Def isn’t aware of this common courtesy because he’s being sued by promoters REMG Entertainment for $57,000 for failing to go through with a concert as planned and without giving adequate notice for cancelling the gig.
Mos allegedly backed out of a concert that was supposed to take place on February 25… On February 24. The promoter claims that one day before Mos was set to put on a show in Toronto at the Kool Haus, he ditched—leaving them with a $57,000 hit.
The cash includes a $12,500 deposit that Mos allegedly hasn’t returned as well as lost customers, sales, and goodwill.
So you think the Backstreet Boys are finished? Well you would be dead wrong! We had the rare privilege of talking to the guys right before a recent Toronto show, and believe us, these guys are still hot. The Molson Ampitheatre was completely sold out for this show with thousands of female fans. We spoke with the guys about their amazing career, their amazing fan base, and they give some words of wisdom to Justin Bieber. Oh ya, they also teach Jordan how to dance!
Last weekend we had the privilege to interview one of the biggest bands of all time, the Backstreet Boys. Although we will be posting a fully edited version of the interview next week, we wanted to post a sneak peak. In this clip, the boys give us some dance tips, and sing happy birthday to a fan who went to some extreme measures to get their attention. Stay tuned for the full interview coming soon!!!!
Summer Rush is an amazing concert hosted by Toronto’s Z103.5 at Canada’s Wonderland. This year didn’t disappoint with an awesome lineup that included JLS, Jay Sean, Girlicious, Faber Drive and Blake McGrath. One thing we noticed at the concert was the lack of security among some of the artists. We explored this topic and also found out some moves to protect yourself against screaming fans.
Careful, kiddies, this is going to be a wild one.
Canada’s own rockers Billy Talent are coming to Toronto, but shhh…if you want in on the action, best not to tell too many people.
The band, who will soon be embarking on a summer whirlwind of European music festivals as well as a couple of shows with Green Day, is playing a free show at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern tonight (Tuesday, June 8), reports eyeweekly.com.
The (up until recently) secret show is part of Nu Music Night and also features KO and Noble Blood. Billy Talent is set to hit the stage at 11:15 p.m. However, there are no advance tickets for this show (remember, it’s free!) so if you want to be part of it, best to arrive early…very early. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.
We wish you luck!
Don’t say you’ve seen an electro-group perform live, until you’ve seen DUBBS.
It’s only fair really.
Instead of going up on stage like most groups only to then just press a play button on a laptop, DUBBS re-creates every aspect of the beat-pumping tune with a variety of equipment- giving the audience the most real-live dynamic electro-concert experience possible.
The three-man Canadian team consists of brothers Alex (Vocals) and Chris (Drums) Van Den Hoeff, and Ottawa producer Martin Sinotte, who hope to make a name for themselves with their revolutionary club-bopping tracks and unique live sound-experience.
“Most DJ’s just turn knobs to play a hit song. That’s it,” says Sinotte. “But then you have us who play the song with a live beat pad, live keyboard, live everything. You have Alex singing, Chris on drums. It gets wild.”
Adds Alex, “It’s a poppy-techno sound with a twist. We call it a new age of electro-house.”

Grab your Converse runners and your skinny jeans because this Sunday (May 9) brings an event that no indie kid is going to want to miss.

What else can I say about Phantogram? I love them. The duo’s debut LP, ‘Eyelid Movies’, is a haunting, psychedelic orgy of beats, samples, synths, guitar and a rare kind of charm. Watch this interview, go listen to their music, and then get your friends from high school to start a band with you… It worked for these dudes. Hear more Phantogram at myspace.com/phantogram.
Woodpigeon has always crafted beautiful, delicate folk-pop, and their latest album ‘Die Stadt Muzikanten’ is no exception. They won me over with their heart-stopping live show, and I want them to win you over too. Check out WP’s new release, and the bonus album ‘BALLADEER / to all the guys i’ve loved before’, which includes recordings from their residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts.
Although they have been friends for decades, Corey Feldman will not be attending Corey Haim’s funeral in Toronto.
In a statement released by Feldman, he explains “In the days following my best friend Corey Haim’s death, I have spent much time with his mother Judy, who has always been like a mother to me. I would love nothing more than to be by her side at Corey’s funeral, however, due to their strong religious beliefs and need for privacy, the family has decided to make Corey’s funeral on Tuesday a small private affair.”
Although there was some initial concerns that there wouldn’t be enough money for Corey Haim’s funeral, a last minute savior has stepped into help.
TMZ has learned that the memorabilia company auctioning off his belongings will be covering Corey’s funeral expenses. Starifacts has offered $20,000 from the sale of his belongings which will be used for his funeral. Some of the major expenses include a headstone, transporting his body back to his hometown of Toronto, and other related costs.
