Here come the men in black, the galaxy defenders!
The trailer for third “Men In Black” installment is finally out today. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back as Agents J and K to kick some major mutant butt.
The Los Angeles Times reports the third film has the duo travelling back in time to the 1960s, where Will Smith’s character encounters a much younger version of his partner, played by Josh Brolin.
“Men in Black 3? is scheduled to open Memorial Day weekend, 2012. The trailer does a good job at exciting MIB fans for more sci-fi action.
The usual enamor or utter decay of the American Dream is left behind and replaced with the realistic monotony of everyday life in The Company Men.
The film centers on the downsizing of a large corporation due to the recession and the subsequent men that the company is forced to lay off. The film revolves around the stories of three men who are searching for new jobs and dealing with the consequences of how being unemployed affects their lives.
Bobby (Ben Affleck), the first to be laid off, moves his family out of their beautiful white picket fenced in home to move in with his parents, and reluctantly leaves his MBA behind for a job manual labor after his wife confirms his fear that he is just “an asshole with a resume.” Phil (Chris Cooper) has trouble in the modern job market due to his obvious older age, the graying hair and wilting eyes, and finds it too difficult to mask his qualms. Gene (Tommy Lee Jones), the former right hand man and best friend of the CEO of the company, leaves his wife of many years and decides to do something positive with his new wealth of free time.
Altogether the film falls deep into the abyss of mediocrity. Though it is a realistic portrayal of the situation that many Americans and Canadians have faced in the last few years, it sheds no light on the improvement of such dire circumstances. The story is droning and depressing. The characters go from sitting in trivial board meetings, discussing business details of the company that are rendered completely arbitrary to the viewer, to moping around their households arguing with their wives and children. It appears that the director, John Wells, was going for something in between American Beauty and Up In the Air. Unfortunately, the script lacks the ambiance and originality of each of those films.
With such a star-studded cast, especially Jones and Cooper who have starred in such compelling dramatic roles (In the Valley of Elah, American Beauty), one would expect to see powerful performances that could possibly outshine the absolute dullness of the narrative. Costner’s character is the highpoint of the film as he plays a stubborn Boston accent wielding carpenter and the antagonistic brother-in-law of Affleck’s character, a role that is seemingly outside of his performance as leading actor.
In the end, The Company Men is just another one of those tragic films that is released at the height of Oscar season that will be entirely forgotten.
The first two movies of the Men in Black franchise collectively earned over $1 billion dollars internationally, so it’s no surprise that Men in Black 3 would be made eventually.
Making it official, Columbia Pictures has set a May 25th, 2012 release date for the third film, reports E! Online.
Currently Will Smith is on board for the third installment of the series. Also, deals have been struck with director Barry Sonnenfeld, executive producer Steven Spielberg, screenwriter David Koep, and producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald.
Although his deal hasn’t been sealed yet, the studio is in “advanced negotiations” with Tommy Lee Jones to return as Agent Kay, reports E! Online.
Keeping up with the trend in Hollywood, Men in Black 3 will be shot in 3D.
Also scheduled to hit theatres around the same time are The Avengers, Star Trek 2, Spider-Man, and Batman 3.
Actor, Tommy Lee Jones has filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures for his role as a sheriff in the 2007 blockbuster, “No Country for Old Men”.
According to MSN.com, Jones filed a $10 million lawsuit, claiming that he is contractually owed bonuses that were dependent on how successful the film was.
The film earned over $160 million dollars and won “Best Picture” at the Oscars.
The suit also claims that expenses were wrongly deducted and that errors in his contract were not corrected prior to filming.
Jones is asking that the studios financial records be reviewed to determine how much he should be paid.
It’s official: Ellen Page and her pregnant alter-ego “Juno” are Oscar worthy.
The film received nods in several category where it will be the only comedy competing against some huge, heavy-hitter dramas. 20-year-old Page is up against the likes of Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth: The Golden Age), Julie Christie (Away From Her), Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) and Laura Linney (The Savages) for Best Actress.
“Juno” is nominated for Best Picture against the critical favourites “Atonement,” “Michael Clayton,” “No Country for Old Men” and “There Will Be Blood.”
Screenwriter Diablo Cody and Canadian director Jason Reitman also scored a nomination for “Juno.”
Sarah Polley will also be representing Canada at the awards. She was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for her film, “Away From Her.”
With so many fantastic performances, it will be especially hard to guess the winners this year. The Best Actor category is an exciting list: George Clooney (Michael Clayton), Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood), Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd), Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises) and Tommy Lee Jones (In The Valley of Elah).
Other notable nominations are 13-year-old Saoirse Ronan (Atonement), Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men) and Casey Affleck (The Assassination of Jesse James?).
James McAvoy and Keira Knightley were noticably snubbed for their lead performances in “Atonement.”
