“The Wrestler” was the big winner at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, picking up best picture and best actor for its star, Mickey Rourke.

Now in its 24th year, the awards ceremony in Santa Monica, Calif., honoured the year’s best in independent cinema on the eve of this weekend’s Academy Awards.

Melissa Leo won in the best actress category for her role in the human-trafficking drama “Frozen River,” while Penelope Cruz and James Franco picked up best supporting acting honours for their performances in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and “Milk,” respectively.

The latter two movies also triumphed in the writing categories, with Woody Allen winning best screenplay for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and Dustin Lance Black winning best first screenplay for “Milk.”
