Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby
Summer blockbuster season is almost upon us and you’re probably just as stoked as I am for a whole new crop of movies to devour. But when it comes to movie fashions, summer blockbusters tend to be big on explosions and less on couture. There’s always just a movie or two each year that leaves the audience with a big sartorial impact. Most people are betting on The Great Gatsby to have the biggest style impact, but just because it has the most fashion hype doesn’t mean it will be this year’s most fashionable film.
So here are the movies of 2013 that you need to keep you eyes on for the film’s fashion and sense of style.
The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famed novel is a rite of passage in any high school english classroom. This novel has made its way to the silver screen before but it is Baz Luhrmann’s super stylized adaptation that has us most excited, making it one of the most anticipated films of the year. The Roaring Twenties was a period of high fashion, artistic expression, crazy parties, and excess. No wonder it’s still a popular period for fashion magazines to take editorial inspiration from, and besides everyone loves a good flapper dress. Although this period piece has the most hype (check out Carey Mulligan’s Vogue cover), the ’20s inspiration might have already reached its peak during the Spring/Summer 2012 runways. Perhaps the film will revitalize last year’s trend and keep it alive.
Spring Breakers
If you’re anything like me, you’re a complete weirdo and base your wardrobe off of people who don’t exist. In the past, I’ve looked to fictional characters like Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series and Angela Chase from My So-Called Life for wardrobe inspiration. I’ve always felt like we have some sort of connection to the fictional characters we cherish most. One way to emulate them is through our wardrobes, as though they’re a part of our everyday lives and inspiration. No matter what books you read, what television shows you watch, or movies you love — there’s always that one character who wows you with their style.
Now that I’m in university, I try not to dress like an eccentric witch with blonde, curly locks. However there’s no reason to take the fun out of a wardrobe just because you’re all grown up. Here are a few very lovely fictional characters who would be fantastic muses for your college wardrobe.
1. Denise Huxtable from The Cosby Show
There’s a whole part of society dedicated to Denise Huxtable appreciation. Though The Cosby Show was about a sweet and funny family, Denise’s wardrobe was always something to admire.
Why it would work for college: There’s a tiny part in all of us that secretly wishes to impress our friends with our wardrobes. I truly feel like Denise’s style would do that. Her style is casual while also making bold statements with reds and printed headbands.
2. Emily Fields from Pretty Little Liars
When they’re not trying to figure out who A is, the characters of Pretty Little Liars have always shown off their unique sense of style. Each character has their own fashion flare, but Emily in particular is bothsporty and edgy at the same time.
Why it would work for college: Emily is known for her athleticism, especially in swimming. While Aria might wear more cutting edge pieces, Emily’s wardrobe is perfect for varsity athletes constantly balancing their academic and athletic roles.
3. John Bender from The Breakfast Club
John Bender might not seem like boyfriend material, but he does have potential “boyfriend” style. It’s kind of hard not to feel like a rebel while wearing a worn-out denim jacket, and paired with the “I don’t care” attitude of this Brat Pack member, you’ll look like a walking teen icon from the 80s.
Why it would work for college: The over-sized jacket will keep you warm during those long commutes to school. It’s also suitable for weekend detentions (although I’ve never heard of that in college.) If that happens, then you’re a rebel for sure.
4. Cher Horowitz from Clueless
Once you admit to yourself that Clueless is like, the best movie/television show of all time, you’ll start to realize that the best part of it is the fashion. Literally every single character in the film, especially Dionne and Cher, has the grooviest style. Maybe I’m totally buggin’ to think that anyone else could pull of their preppy, plaid-filled wardrobe. As if!
Why it would work for college: Although Cher is in high school, her wardrobe was made for a college student. Cher somehow manages to look ready for a job interview (or in her case, a driving test) all the time, which is good for a college student embarking on pursuits in the real world.
5. Hilary Banks from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Instead of reading boring, snobby movie reviews, from now on I’m just going to head straight to Screen Junkies‘ Honest Trailers. In this episode, they take on Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, a confusing, movie chronicling explorers journeying to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they are forced to fight a terrifying battle to save the human race. [Sound cue: Dum, dum, dum.]
The clip, directed by Andy Signore and Brett Weiner, points out all the plot inconsistencies and strange character developments.
In the past, Honest Movie Trailers took on The Hunger Games and The Avengers. With Halloween around the corner it’s the perfect time to take on a horror movie. Which would you like to see them do? How about Scream? The teen sexfest starring 90s-relevant actors who blindly run into the danger instead of away from it.
Watch it here:
If BadLipReading directed The Hunger Games it would have been a very different movie. The plot would have focused on fudge puddles, buying purses and someone named Cod Fish Joe. The script would have been complete gibberish and characters would randomly make goat sounds.
Bad Lip Reading dubbed over clips of the movie and taglined their brand new dramatic film as “Katniss likes her purse, but everyone thinks she doesn’t.” It sounds like a good drama to me.
In the past, they’ve dubbed over scenes from Twilight, and that horrendous music video for “Hot Girl Problems.” What would you like to see them dub over?

The casting for The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire was announced a couple weeks ago and now we’re finally getting solid proof of that sh*t is going down. The first on-set shots of the movie are circulating online and I’m kinda freaking out.
Josh Hutcherson shows off his newly-dyed blond hair as Peeta and Sam Claflin looks smoking as Finnick Odair. The duo are on location in Atlanta Georgia,

BAMF Girls Club by Comediva is quickly becoming one of my new favourite shows. It stars kickass female characters like Harry Potter’s Hermione Granger, The Hunger Games’ Katniss Everdeen and The Walking Dead’s Michonne… And then of course there’s Twilight’s Bella, but I don’t know if she’s earned the strong, female role model label (sorry Bella).
Anyway, two new episodes are finally out. The first involves the ladies setting down house rules and unsuccessfully trying to elect a leader. The second guest stars Game of Thrones’ Arya Stark, who got herself into trouble and is forced to spend a day with Hermione as punishment. Though personally, I’d love to spend a day with the witch!

Carly Rae Jepsen
What she’s wearing: The Canadian popstar performed on The Today Show wearing a coral Kelly Wearstler dress paired with printed Alice + Olivia “Juliet” wedges, an ASOS necklace, and a white studded belt.
Why we love it: Coral is on trend as the summer colour for lips, so Jepsen took it a step further by wearing it in a bright summer dress. The watercolour-type pattern creates a cool graphic design and is accented well with her silver accessories.
Takeaway: Monochromatic looks are on trend but make sure to use a different colour for your accessories so things aren’t too matchy matchy.
The Wanted

What they’re wearing: The UK boy band performed at the John F. Kennedy airport in NYC for the JetBlue Live From T5 Concert series, wearing graphic tees, jeans, a sport coat, chambray, and more.
Why we love it: Well it’s more that we like four out of five of the looks and excluding Jay would just seem too cruel. Siva, in the grey sport coat, looks the most put-together with his slightly monochromatic look. His T-shirt has a hint of navy, which gives a subtle pop of colour. Tom and Nathan rock the cool graphic tees, but I give the edge to Nathan since his mustached monocle print is more fun and his khakis set him apart from the rest of the group. Max wears a light blue short-sleeve button-down in chambray (a light woven fabric resembling denim) — a fabric that has made a major comeback. And Jay, well he’s wearing a novelty tee that can be either seen as vulgar or hilarious, nothing fashionable about it. However since Jay is known for his sense of humor he can get away with it, but he does bring down the group’s fashion average. Sorry!
Takeway: When choosing graphic tees try choosing a graphic that suits your personality because they’ll send a message to others about you. Try staying away from novelty tees because they may seem funny at first sight but the joke usually is over by the second glance, then you’ll be the joke instead of your shirt.

We first got excited about BAMF Girl’s Club when we saw the trailer back in July, depicting fictional heroines (and Bella) being awkward on the Comediva reality show. Episode one features Katniss, Bella, Hermione and zombie slayer Michonne, among others.
In this episode, the ladies move into their new home and drama starts right away when Lisbeth Sander attempts to make friends with Hermione. Unfortunately Lisbeth thinks “making friends” means researching all of Hermione’s sordid past actions and reciting them to her (will this come back to haunt the witch?).
Katniss Everdeen is a reality show pro and we’ll have to watch closely to see who she strategically chooses for her alliance (my bet is on Michonne and Buffy).
Then there’s Bella who pretty much gets upset by everything. Team Jacob will surely be shedding tears along with her at the end.

Nina Dobrev
What she wore: The Vampire Diaries star celebrated her September Ocean Drive magazine cover in a strapless graphic GUiSHEM by Guillermo Jop dress.
Why we love it: The dress has an awesome geometric pattern that takes your eyes on a journey all over the dress. It’s a sexy cocktail dress but that pattern makes it modern and cool. The solid black insets at the waist, giving her that coveted hourglass shape and an even more stunning silhouette.
Takeaway: The eye-catching graphic pattern might scare off more conservative people, however the striking black, white and grey colour-scheme makes it approachable. Dresses with black insets or black side panelling are great for all shapes and sizes because it creates an hourglass silhouette illusion. Dobrev’s dress sure is hypnotizing!
Shenae Grimes
What she wore: The 90210 actress wore a pink sheer lace LOFT top with a leather skirt and black blazer at LOFT and Giuliana Rancic’s “Live in Pink” event in West Hollywood, California.
Why we love it: If you ever heard the song “Leather and Lace” then you can see what kind of look Grimes’ was channeling, and we love it! The look mixes both sweet and feminine lace with tough and sexy leather, and adds smart and clever with her blazer (the epitome of a modern woman). But all that aside, it’s a cool look that one can rock back to school despite the sheerness of the top (obviously opt for something not as see-through). Plus the statement necklaces adds a nice touch of metallic but also doesn’t distract you form the rest of the outfit.
Takeaway: Try mixing two different styles together to get a more complex and unique look. Mixing sweet bohemian with tough rocker chick can show the world there is more to you than meets the eye.
Josh Hutcherson
What he wore: The Hunger Games star wore a Levi’s Trucker Jacket, a white tee, dark denim, and lace up Vans at CBS’ “Teacher’s Rock Special Live Concert” in Los Angeles, California.
Why we love it: Hutcherson sported the classic All-American look: jeans, a white tee and a denim jacket. I know what you’re thinking and yes the denim jacket-jeans combo is also called the Canadian Tuxedo, but that’s specific to when the wash (colour) of denim is the exact same (or very similar) for both the jacket and the pants. Opting for the darker denim, Hutcherson had more versatility with this clean and casual look, whereas if he went lighter, he wouldn’t look as cool. (If you don’t believe me, click here.)
Takeaway: Having a denim jacket is a solid investment for anyone to have and works year round, except for winter. But make sure that if you’re going to pair it with jeans go for a drastically different wash or even coloured denim. (Try sticking with khakis because it’ll make your life a lot easier.) Kate

Sometimes movie trailers are way better than the actual movies themselves. Based on carefully selected clips, music and strategic spinning the plot, a plotless flick can come off looking inspired.
That’s why Screen Junkies created Honest Trailers. Their newest video is for The Hunger Games, which is funny because I actually enjoyed both the movie and trailer. Still, when the narrator plainly states the plot and facts, you realize how silly it can come off.

Pretty much every actor in Young Hollywood would gladly participate as a tribute in The Hunger Games if their prize was to play Finnick Odair in the sequel, Catching Fire. Many names have been tossed around over the last couple months, including Jesse Williams, Zac Efron and Armie Hammer.
The latest rumor is that actor Sam Claflin has landed the role. Variety’s Jeff Sneider confirmed that Claflin made the studio’s shortlist to play Finnick. Now according to Zap2It, Lionsgate has signed off on his offer.
Claflin starred in this year’s Snow White and the Huntsman and last summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. Unlike some of the other names that have been tossed around (Robert Pattinson, Ryan Gosling) I can actually imagine Claflin as Odair… he just needs to be a little more blond and bronzed but those are easy fixes.
Finnick Odair is the trident-wielding victor from District Four who participates in the Quarter Quell. He’s a Capitol playboy and we’re not sure whether or not we can trust his charming smile.
Do you think Claflin is a good fit?
Sam Claflin interview:
Coming soon to Comediva, a new reality show called BAMF Girls Club starring your favourite badass teen heroines, including The Hunger Games’ Katniss Everdeen, Harry Potter’s Hermione Granger and Buffy the Vampire Slayer… oh and then there’s Twilight’s mopey Bella Swan. The most needy, possessive heroine of them all.
You can only imagine the drama that unfolds with Lisbeth Salander trying to pierce any submissive girl’s nose she can and Michonne slashing anyone who looks like a zombie (ahem, Bella).
The show was written by Vicki Toro and directed by Emily McGregor. My predictions? With Katniss and Michonne’s new pact a schism will split the group. Katniss will be called fake and she’ll eventually turn to alcohol. Hermione will erupt over dirty dishes that Lisbeth refuses to clean, and Bella will cry in a corner and eventually leave the show so she can be with Edward.

Looks like The Hunger Games will be getting the Harry Potter treatment as the last book in the trilogy, Mockingjay, will be split into two films.
Lionsgate, the series’ studio, have also announced the potential release dates for all the Hunger Games movies. We can expect to see Catching Fire, the second installment, in theaters on November 22, 2013, MockingJay Part I on November 21, 2014 and Part II on November 22, 2015.
YAY FOR MORE HUNGER GAMES FOR US! YAY FOR MORE JENNIFER LAWRENCE! BOO FOR MAKING US WAIT SO LONG! *sobs*
Will it be worth the wait? I think yes. I love it when I have the opportunity to be my favourite books be realized, especially when they have the complex story to do so (ahem, Twilight). Just don’t expect to see me in line when they finally release the 50 Shades of Grey films, because you know it’ll happen.
Want to meet Cody Simpson? No problem, andPOP is running a contest for Toronto residents to meet the Aussie this weekend (watch to find out more). We also talk about a pivotal part of The Hunger Games that was overlooked (hint it’s centered on washrooms). Finally there’s a birthday in the office (shucks, it’s mine) but I didn’t expect a surprise on air!
In retrospect, the fact that The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins’ blatantly disregarded Katniss Everdeen’s bowel functions in the arena seems like a serious overlook. If you’re going to be trapped on top of a large tree in the forest for who knows how long without bathroom facilities, wouldn’t that be a minor concern?
Not to worry. We can now expect The Hunger Games Unabridged edition, which involves 200 extra pages about sh*tting in the woods. Finally we can fill in the blanks!
On a serious note, my co-worker asked whether Collins in fact talks about going to the washroom in the woods. And no, I can’t think of one reference about it. [Source]

Remember that alleged yet undeniably bogus feud between Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart? That sh*t just got real. Well, not really, but The Hunger Games and Twilight stars are going for the same movie role and in an effort to make rivalries out of thin air (like magic!) a spat is being concocted.
The two ladies are going for Peyton Loftis in Lie Down In Darkness. The character is a beaut of a girl whose family contributes to her ultimate suicide. That is dark! It’s based on the book of the same name by William Styron.
Both actresses have expressed their interested in the role. ”I want to play Peyton more than anything I can possibly taste or touch in my life,” Stewart said to Elle. ”I want to play her so bad. They’re the most fucked-up family. There’s a script adaptation . . . and it’s good. Two people vying for the part [of the father] are Daniel Day-Lewis and Colin Firth. Daniel would be perfect.”
Then Jennifer Lawrence went and told W Magazine: ”“I am obsessed with that part. I have this feeling of protectiveness over characters I want to play . . . If someone else gets the part, I’m afraid they won’t do it right.
“I’m trying to write the director . . . to convince him that I should be in his movie. I’ll chase him if I have to. I’ll sit outside his house.”
These ladies are both too laid back to get into any sort of Hollywood-style feud (thankfully) but we have to say, this must be the most difficult decision of life for the casting director. [Source]
Who do you think would fit the role?
It’s 420! In celebration, we play the “guess who has smoked pot?” game with Jimmy Kimmel and watch a music video that will probably kill your buzz. Then we admire Jennifer Lawrence’s impressive archery skills.

Considering The Hunger Games’ Katniss Everdeen has wicked archery skills, Spain’s El Hormiguero naturally decided to test her on the spot by attaching panes of glass to several volunteers and having her shoot them with arrows. The dummies zigzagged across the stage for an added challenge.
I think Lawrence ultimately hit more targets than the host but her arrows don’t stick for some reason, plus she gets added points for doing it all in a Victoria Beckham dress and black heels.
In the meantime, her kickass skills should get everyone excited for Catching Fire!
