After only one week on store shelves, Grand Theft Auto IV has broken all-time entertainment records for day one and week one sales by dollar value by selling through to customers over $500 million in product in one week; approximately 6 million units world wide.
According to Take-Two, Grand Theft Auto IV sold approximately 3.6 million units on its opening day with a retail value of approximately $310 million globally.
“Grand Theft Auto IV’s first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date,” says Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two.
“Grand Theft Auto IV makes full use of the power of next generation technology, and offers players an experience unique in the interactive entertainment medium. This game sets a new standard in the industry, with critics hailing it as both an artistic and technological masterpiece,” said Ben Feder, Take-Two’s Chief Executive Officer.
Although the Xbox 360 version outsold the PS3 version by 20% in the UK, likely due to upcoming exclusive downloadable content, the real winner is still Take-Two.
EA announced yesterday that it had proposed to acquire Take-Two Interactive in an all cash deal valued at $2 billion, a 64% premium over Take-Two’s closing stock price on February 15th, only to have it rejected hours later and described as “substantially undervalued.”
“Our all-cash proposal is a unique opportunity for Take-Two shareholders to realize immediate value at a substantial premium, while creating long-term value for EA shareholders,” said EA CEO John Riccitiello in a press release. “Take-Two’s game designers would also benefit from EA?s financial resources, stable, game-focused management team, and strong global publishing capabilities.”
While the proposed 26$ per share offer may be tempting to some, Take-Two was quick to shut it down and called it opportunistic in their own press release.
“Electronic Arts’ proposal provides insufficient value to our shareholders and comes at absolutely the wrong time given the crucial initiatives underway at the Company,” said Strauss Zelnick, Executive Chairman of the Board of Take-Two referring in part to the all important April 29th Grand Theft Auto launch date.
Some would argue that the merger would give EA a monopoly in the sports video game category as it would be eliminating its biggest competitor, the 2K sports series.
While Take-Two doesn’t believe the current offer is enough, they are willing to begin negotiations April 30th, the day after GTA IV is released.
Today, Take-Two Interactive announced the acquisition of Illusion Softworks, a game development studio based in the Czech Republic.
Illusion Softworks, now 2K Czech, is the studio behind hit video games such as Mafia, Vietcong and Hidden & Dangerous. The studio is currently working with 2K games on Mafia 2, the sequel to the original Mafia which sold more than two million copies.
Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K games, said “The 2K Czech team is responsible for several very innovative and highly-regarded franchises and we look forward to continuing to develop new and existing IP together.”
The feeling seems to be mutual as Petr Vochozka, CEO of 2K Czech, said “We are pleased to become a 2K studio and are confident that this new partnership will strengthen our current and future projects.”
Mafia 2 will allow players to roam freely through the street as they interact with the various crime families of 1950’s Empire City. Daniel Vavra, scripwriter of the original Mafia will be writing the script for the sequel. Mafia 2 will be available for the Xbox 360, Play Station 3, and PC.
