For years men and women have asked “which way does Zach sway?” and now women everywhere are heard sighing in disappointment. The guy who plays Spock in the Star Trek remake loves…well, something that rhymes with Spock.

He recently came out New York Magazine about his 8 month stint in the theatre production of Angels in America, where he plays a gay man who leaves his AIDS stricken lover.

“As a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed,” he says about his role.

His most recognizable roles have been playing a super-villian in Heroes and a USS Enterprise officer in Star Trek but he has played a ton of gay roles on t.v. as well, like in So noTORIous and American Horror Story.

Gay or straight, there’s no denying Zach has both the acting chops and sophistication to be the next George Clooney. Cheers to coming out, Zach!

Posted on andPOP:

Louis Ferreira and I share more than one thing in common: we both speak Portuguese aside from English and both of us were not Sci-Fi kind of guys before Stargate Universe — the latest entity in the space-themed franchise, which premiers today at 9 p.m. exclusively on Space.

Ferreira’s resume includes an impressive amount of TV and film work. His characters range from The Donald himself in a Trump TV-movie, to lead roles in shows like “Trinity” and “Missing,” guest spots on “24” and “CSI Miami,” among tens of other TV series and films, including a a role in this year’s “Grey Gardens” with Drew Barrymore. Still, Sci-Fi remained unexplored territory for the actor (aside from a very short stint on “Star Trek”).

So how did he wind up on one of the most successful Sci-Fi franchises of all time? It’s actually quite a serendipitous story which Fereira (formerly known as Justin Louis) shared with andPOP.

Side story: when the Portuguese-born, Toronto-raised actor kicked off his career in the late ‘80s, early ‘90s, Vancouver was a booming destination for film productions so he’d go there whenever work would dry up in Toronto. “I remember being in my twenties and being like, ‘If I could have the ultimate lifestyle, it would be the farm in Toronto, the apartment in New York’ and I said, ‘a boat!’ If you could live on a boat like “Miami Vice” you would want to do it in Vancouver,” shared the Gemini winner.

Fast forward a decade and Ferreira got himself an audition for the part of Colonel Everett Young in a new ‘Stargate’ series, but he wasn’t too sure if it was a role he’d want to take on. “I was like ‘Sci-Fi: I don’t know enough about it,’ and I operate in a very strange way in that I sometimes ask the universe for signs. Like, ‘am I supposed to do this?’ It’s a strange thing that I ask,” he admits.

Ferreira remembered his adolescent dream of owning a boat in Vancouver and put it out there, asking for a sign. Sure enough, days before his test, an old boat attached to a trailer showed up right in front of his house. He then said if the boat would stay there until his audition, that meant he should take part in the show. “The boat stayed there for not only the test, it stayed there for another month,” he said with awe. “I had no idea what happened, someone just dropped off this old boat in front of my house.”

Ironically enough, “Stargate: Universe” is filmed in Vancouver. Aside from that, there were two other factors that drew Ferreira into the project; one was that he admired the creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper and the fact that “Universe” is quite different from previous “Stargates” according to Ferreira, who says the new series is much darker and edgier. The other reason is that Emmy nominee Robert Carlyle was involved.

“I saw Robert Carlyle’s name attached to the project and I was like ‘oh boy, that’s an actor, he’s my kind of actor.’ Personally, I was like ‘I’m a big fan of his work’ and so those two things for me were the reason I was drawn to it,” said Ferreira.

He added that this time around, “Stargate” is much more grittier, realistic and ultimately “good drama that’s set against the sort of Sci-Fi backdrop.” “It seems to be the right sort of evolution if I could use that word for the franchise, and I think that it bridges the gap nicely,” he said. “I think there’s something there for all the old ‘Stargate’ fans…and then hopefully what it can do is bring all kinds of new viewers as well who might watch the ‘Houses’ or the ‘Fringes.’ ”

It’s worth noting that the effects in this one are fantastic. Ferreira revealed that the special effect guys behind “District 9” are involved in the series as well. He plays Colonel Everett Young, one of the lead roles in the new series.

“We start with Young on a sort of leading base but the bigger picture is that he’s made that decision that his relationship with his wife is sort of in jeopardy, and that’s where his heart is right now,” said Ferreira. “He doesn’t want to lose his wife and he knows he’s in trouble so his whole thing is to finish this last mission and get back home. So when this mishap, we’ll call it happens, the demons that are in there become part of it.”

The actor is still filming “Universe” through October and after that he plans on “sleeping.” “I really don’t have any plans but to just sort of love my family and then see what happens next.”

“Stargate Universe” airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on Space and today you can also catch Ferreira on the new Space show “InnerSpace” where he’ll be talking about the series.

Posted on andPOP:

Many actors dream of having a feature film debut in a major blockbuster hit, but very few actually get that chance. One of those few actors is Antonio Elias. The up-and-coming actor plays Officer Pitts in the upcoming “Star Trek” movie and when we spoke, the film was one day from its highly anticipated release.

“I can tell you a little bit, only cause like I’m sworn to secrecy,” Elias says in a joking but serious way. “Man like I’m paranoid there’s people outside you know Paramount, outside my house at every moment till the movie comes out.”

Elias has a supporting role in the film. “I play a character named Officer Pitts. He’s a Starfleet officer, aboard Federation starShip,” says the 26-year-old. “I can’t tell you which one. All I can tell you that in the sequence that I’m in the film, it’s a really really cool part of the film.”

He guarantees his contribution to the movie features “high tension” moments, “really cool” character revelations and as he puts it, “some really cool stuff is going down.”

But Elias never imagined these really cool things would happen to him in his very first movie appearance. “I mean, never in my wildest dreams did I think that like you just said, my first feature film would be a blockbuster…for me it was such a surreal experience,” he says. “It definitely took a little while for that reality to set in.”

Although he admits to being more of a “Star Wars” fan, Elias says it was an honour to be part of the project and be able to work with director J.J. Abrams.

“He’s a genuinely nice guy,” says Elias of Abrams. “And he just looks like he’s having so much fun. And he works with a lot of the same crew from project to project, so the relationship that they all had together really set the tone for everyone else, like all the actors and any new crew.”

Elias is new to film, but he’s definitely not a first-timer when it comes to the small screen. He’s made many appearances on primetime television, including TV cedits in “In Justice,” “Vanished,” the “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff “Private Practice” among others, but he says his favourite TV role by far was Corporal Hector Sanchez in an episode of “Ghost Whisperer.”

“I got to play a soldier who dies in Iraq and that alone is an emotional thing… I learned a lot during that experience.” But he also says the experience on the set and “a battle scene reenactment” complete with learning how to “shoot blanks” made the part a fun and memorable one.

And before landing multiple parts on TV, Elias was involved with local theatre on both a community and professional level. Before that, he was an impersonator (well, at least for family and friends). “My mom saw how animated I was and she decided to enroll me in an acting summer camp when I was eight,” says Elias.” And from that point on I caught the acting bug.”

Elias, born in in New Jersey and raised in Miami, got his SAG (Screen Actors Guild) card by the young age of 11 and eventually moved to L.A. to focus on his acting career.

His next project to be released is an indie film directed by Sundance Film Festival Winner Victor Nunez called “Spoken Word.” The movie tells the story of a spoken word artist (played by Kuno Becker) and focuses on his troubled relationship with his brother and father (Rubén Blades).

“It was definitely a great experience also,” Elias says of making the movie. “It’s such a smaller film. I mean, I’m going from a 150 million dollar film like ‘Star Trek’ to a 4.5 million dollar independent film and a much much smaller, more intimate story.”

Elias lands his first leading role in a feature film playing Ramon in “Spoken Word.” “I play Kuno’s younger brother and the relationship the three men have in the family is very strained,” Elias reveals. “There’s a lot of pride and guilt between them and a little bit of shame in there, and it kind of keeps them from really expressing how they feel about each other.”

The movie is making the film festival circuit and will hopefully be released by the end of this year or in the beginning of 2010. In the meantime, Elias continues to do what he loves best: hang out with friends and family, play video games and of course, audition.

“I’m just still going after it man,” says Elias. “I’m still auditioning, still just trying to take advantage of every opportunity that I get.”

Let’s hope he’ll continue to “live long and prosper” in the movie business.

andPOP - POP Culture with Substance

Posted on andPOP:

A few months ago I caught a 20-minute non-screening of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, where the most memorable thing that happened was me falling down a third of a long flight of stairs, injuring my shoulders in a way that still hasn’t fully healed.
The scenes were disconnected, 12-year-old Kirk announcing himself as “James Tiberious Kirk!” was still stupid, and the time travel device driving the plot looked sketchy. The film was written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orchi, who typically favour setpieces over plot and quirks over character development. But the actors were effective and during the rapid-fire action sequences I could actually tell what was going on. I’m glad I saw it; when the lights came down on the full-length movie, I knew what to expect.

Make no mistake: this is not science fiction. It does not utilize a technology-driven society to explore an issue in the present. It is not Star Trek as defined by The Next Generation onward; there are no Big Ideas, no debates over man’s place in the universe. It is, in short, no Battlestar Galactica. But I underestimated Abrams and company; this is an exhilirating, slam-bang space opera, one of the best I’ve seen, that happens to star the characters from the original Star Trek. That also means it has one of the most memorable casts ever to grace a screen, and while most of them are drawn in broad strokes, that’s long been the fate of supporting characters: Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) do have actual character arcs.

This must be what watching Star Wars was like thirty-two years ago. It didn’t present anything new, but came across with a credibility and vitality audiences had never seen before. Abrams understands, like few modern directors seem to, that it’s not just about the budget. Granted, Star Trek’s $150 million investment was considerable, but it could have easily gone to waste (as it did in the excreable Wolverine) without a properly fleshed-out setting, plot and characters.

This version of Star Trek looks lived in. The future Earth that gave rise to the Federation looks tangible and welcoming. The planet Vulcan feels like it has its own history. Suddenly it isn’t surprising that monitoring stations of the type manned by Scotty (Simon Pegg), which appeared to be there simply so Kirk could stumble across it in the preview, would be set up in the middle of nowhere, staffed by a mechanic who was sent there as punishment. As in the various series, aliens of the Deep Space Nine variety are all over the place like intergalactic immigrants, in all levels of society, with their otherness never commented on.
As in the preview, Kirk, Spock, Scotty, McCoy (Karl Urban), Sulu (John Cho), Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and Chekov (Anton Yelchin) feel like the characters of pop-culture lore, and the players inhabit them wonderfully. The screenplay is peppered with beats (such as the “red shirt”) from the original series, and while Urban perhaps overdoes his character a bit, it’s hard to argue with the way he says “dammit.”

More than anything, Star Trek reminds me of the animated epics Titan A.E. and Treasure Planet, in that every 20 minutes something spectacular happens, but it actually has a solid plot, unlike Titan A.E., and doesn’t feel neutered, unlike Treasure Planet. Incidentally, that time travel device is still ludicrous. But it lets the future Spock (Leonard Nimoy) come onto the scene, and gives the nasty Romulan villain (Eric Bana, of all people) some real depth. Also, the plot is internally consistent: once it establishes the rules, it doesn’t break them, unlike every other science fiction epic from the past ten or so years.
After the debacle that was the Star Wars prequel trilogy and the Matrix sequels (not to mention Titan A.E. and Treasure Planet), I’d forgotten what a good space opera was like. Movies like Abrams’ Star Trek remind us why they’re still bankrolled however – when they work, they’re amazing.

The 78-year-old, who played Spock in the popular sci-fi series, is being recognized for his work as an actor and director.

According to the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, which presents the annual awards, Nimoy has “established himself as one of the great film and television stars with his performances in such television series as Mission Impossible and the original science fiction series, STAR TREK, in the 60s.”

Nimoy also starred in six “Star Trek” movies with the original cast, directed two installments of the film franchise and will appear as the older Spock in the newest “Star Trek” feature. The J.J. Abrams-directed reboot will hit theatres on May 8.

DreamWorks Animation chief executive Jeffrey Katzenberg will also receive a special honour at the Saturn Awards.

The filmmaker, who oversaw the release of such hit films as “Shrek,” “Kung Fu Panda” and “Monsters Vs. Aliens,” will be presented with the Visionary Award for “his efforts in bringing about the 3D evolution currently sweeping the country as well as raising the quality of film animation.”

The 35th annual Saturn Awards will be held in Burbank, Calif., on June 24. “The Dark Knight” dominates this year’s field of nominees with 11 nods, followed by “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Iron Man” with nine and eight nominations, respectively.

Posted on andPOP:

More wedding bells are on the horizon after the state of California passed the bill allowing gay marriage.

“Star Trek” alum George Takei has announced on his website that he is ready to marry his partner, Brad Altman.

“Our California dream is reality,” Takei wrote. “Brad Altman and I can now marry. We are overjoyed! Brad and I have shared our lives together for over 21 years. We’ve worked in partnership; he manages the business side of my career and I do the performing. We’ve traveled the world together from Europe to Asia to Australia. We’ve shared the good times as well as struggled through the bad. He helped me care for my ailing mother who lived with us for the last years of her life. He is my love and I can’t imagine life without him. Now, we can have the dignity, as well as all the responsibilities, of marriage. We embrace it all heartily…For now, Brad and I are enjoying the delicious dilemma of deciding where, when, and how we will be married. Marriage equality took a long time, but, like fine wine, its bouquet is simply exquisite.”

Posted on andPOP:

The latest Star Trek movie is the latest casualty of the fallout from the Writers’ Guild of America strike which officially ended yesterday.

The movie will not be released now until 2009, reports Variety.

Originally the film, to be directed by “Lost” co-creator J.J. Abrams, was to be released late this year. Instead, Paramount has decided to push the release date back to May of next year.

Variety reports the reason the studio gave for moving the film ahead is due to “gaps” that now occur in the movie release schedule because of projects being postponed or canceled due to the strike.

Studio insiders also told the trade magazine that the latest saga in the Star Trek series would have gained more money with a summer release than a fall one.

Posted on andPOP:

Rumour has it that William Shatner is upset that he has not been cast in the new Star Trek movie.

Director J.J Abrams (Lost, MI:III) has reportedly left Shatner out of the movie’s lead roles, but was considering asking the actor to make a cameo.

That idea didn’t go over so well with Shatner.

“I don’t do cameos. I can’t imagine what I would do as a cameo,” he reportedly has said on the issue.

The 11th adaptation of the Star Trek series will however feature a prominent role for fellow veteran, Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock. Heroes star Zachary Quinto, will play a younger version of the pointy eared Vulcan.

Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana are also set to star in the new movie, which kicks off shooting next month.

It’s true – moviegoers will see two familiar faces in the iconic ‘Star Trek ‘ roles when J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the sci-fi series hits theatres next year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Cho from ‘Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle’ has been cast as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu. Sulu, a helmsman aboard the USS Enterprise, was originally played by George Takei.

Simon Pegg, star of ‘Hot Fuzz’ and ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ will play chief engineer Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott, a role originally made famous by the late James Doohan. Pegg previously worked with Abrams on ‘Mission: Impossible III.’

While the role of Captain James Kirk has not yet been settled, Chris Pine (‘Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement’) is in serious negotiations and heavily favoured to win the part.

The ‘Star Trek’ reboot will follow the formation and early adventures of Captain Kirk and his Starship Enterprise crew. The prequel will be the 11th Star Trek movie.

Shooting begins in November, with a release date set for Christmas Day 2008.

Confirmed castings so far include Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov, Zoë Saldana as Uhura, Eric Bana as Nero and Zachary Quinto as Spock. Original Spock Leonard Nimoy has a cameo role.

Posted on andPOP:

Happy Birthday, Star Trek.

Trekkies everywhere are celebrating today as the sci-fi adventure series marks its 40th anniversary. “Star Trek” first made its TV launch on Sept. 8, 1966.

There won’t be any cake but classic-TV network TV Land will air four episodes from the original “Star Trek” series on Friday at 8 p.m. EDT. The pilot and the historic episode fearing TV’s first interracial kiss will be featured.

The network will begin broadcasting “Star Trek” episodes regularly on November 17. Episodes can also be viewed online at TVLand.com.

Fans should also check local listings for high-definition versions of episodes set to debut in syndication on Sept. 16.

Posted on andPOP:

CBS Paramount announced on Thursday that the original “Star Trek” television series will be digitally remastered before being put into syndication next month.

E! Online reports that the release will coincide with the franchise’s 40th anniversary, and will mark the first time in 16 years the show has been up for syndication.

“By giving the series a digital upgrade using the best technology available today, it will continue to be a leader in cutting-edge television programming as we introduce the series to a new generation of viewers,” read a statement from president of CBS Paramount Domestic Television, John Nogawski.

Many of the landscapes and ships will be completely redone using CGI effects, similar to the way that George Lucas revamped the original “Star Wars” films a few years ago.

However, a scenic-art supervisor for the “Star Trek” films and spinoffs said the changes wouldn’t be as dramatic as Lucas’.

“We’re taking great pains to respect the integrity and style of the original,” Michael Okuda told TVGuide.com. “Our goal is to always ask ourselves: What would [creator Gene] Roddenberry have done with today’s technology?”

The sleek new “Star Trek” will premiere on September 16 with “Balance of Terror,” an episode from the very first season.

Posted on andPOP:

And the saga continues.

E! Online is reporting that a video game of Star Trek will be released to celebrate the franchise’s 40th anniversary.

The game will feature all five captains of the Star Trek Enterprise – Captain Kirk, Jean Luc Picard, Sisco, Janeway and Archer. This is the first time all five of the captains have been featured in one Star Trek project.

The game is set to be released in the fall, will be entitled “Legacy,” and will be available for PCs and XBox 360s.

“It’s been around a long time, it’s a staple of American life and I think we need something new and different. I couldn’t imagine someone else playing Captain Kirk, even in a videogame, so I kind of got a little territorial,” William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk on the original Star Trek, told Reuters.

Posted on andPOP:

The remains of James Doohan, an actor best known for playing chief engineer Scotty on Star Trek, will be shot into space this October. He died one year ago at age 85.

Space Services, a Houston-based company, was supposed to put the ashes into orbit last year but pushed back the flight to allow more tests on the rocket.

Reuters reports that Space Services spokeswoman Susan Schonfeld confirmed the new October launch date.

Doohan’s remains will be sent into space for a short flight, along with the ashes of about 100 other people. The capsules will then return to earth. Another flight in December or January will launch Doohan’s ashes into orbit for a period of several years.

“Whatever goes up must come down,” said Schonfeld, explaining that the capsule will someday fall out of orbit, burning up in Earth’s atmosphere.

A service for fans will be put on by Doohan’s family on the day of the October launch. Thousands are expected to attend, with many in Star Trek costumes.

CBS Paramount Televisions Studios is opening its vaults to clear out some 4,000 items, to be sold in more than 1,000 lots. The auction will be held October 5-7 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the original ?Star Trek? series.

Posted on andPOP:

George Takei, better known as Mr. Sulu to Star Trek fans, has come out of the closet.

In an interview with gay and lesbian magazine Frontiers, Takei, 68, says he has been openly homosexual for years ? at least around family and friends.

“But I have not talked to the press,” he says. “In that sense, maybe that’s another opening of the corridor there.”

He has been involved with Brad Altman for 18 years. Until now, Altman had always been identified as Takei?s manager on the actor?s website.

Takei starred in the original Star Trek series in the late ?60s as a crew member of the Enterprise. He later appeared in the first six Star Trek films.

He is currently starring in a stage production called Equus in Los Angeles.
