Here’s a question – is Gaga the right person to be judging dancing? If it was a singing competition we can understand, but dancing is another story. And isn’t Gaga notorious for having some spills on stage here and there?

Isn’t Gaga judging a dancer like asking Lindsay Lohan to walk a straight line? Both are not experts in those given fields.
Following a number of young hopefuls during the ups and downs of a difficult on air dancing competition, the new season and its judges promise to be bigger and better than any season prior. As judge Tré Armstrong reveals, viewers will be treated to sexy dancing and a lot of talent as early on as the first three minutes of the season.

“I’m anxious and nervous and excited and overwhelmed at the same time to see the show tonight,” Armstrong told andPOP on Monday, a mere few hours before the premier. “[It’s the] best season yet for sure.”

However, it’s definitely not all fun and games for the contestants. As every other season, this time around each competitor who the judges are unconvinced should proceed to Finals Week in Toronto must come face to face with their worst nightmare – a little thing called “Blake Boot Camp.”

“It’s definitely the first moment where their eyes really kind of start to bulge out of their heads and say wow, okay, I didn’t know how hard this is going to be,” says Armstrong’s co-judge and choreographer, Blake McGrath. “We do that to prepare them for the shows. It’s a really gruelling process.” The experience, which McGrath titles interesting, fun, and crazy, definitely takes its toll on the contestants’ nerves. “I think people throw up this year, actually,” the judge reveals.

First up on the audition list? T-Dot. Having been the first audition episode to air, the show’s two-hour slot was full of amazing and horrible auditions alike, a handful of familiar faces, and siblings of contestants past. “They murdered the floor,” says Armstrong of the Toronto auditions. “Each year everyone says Toronto is the north Hollywood. Then we get to Toronto, and for some reason we have really good dancers, which last year proved because Denys won. [And] this season? Phenomenal dancers. I think that’s why Toronto’s the first episode.”

From what we got to see in the season premier, it seems that majority of the auditions were just that – phenomenal. Not only did the contestants dominate their auditions, but the ones who were sent to boot camp passed with flying colours – a task extremely difficult to accomplish when it comes to the choreography and wrath of McGrath.

Not all auditions are fun and games, however. The judges reveal that as every past season, this one will have its fair share of bad auditions where they must tell a contestant that dancing is not their calling. “You can usually tell who is there for the gimmicks or they’re honestly really into it,” admits McGrath. “If you know that they’re just there for the shits and giggles, you’re going to shit and giggle with them.”

“Sometimes you have to let a person breath,” adds Armstrong. “They might not be the best but it’s okay, let them live. Maybe they just wanted an opportunity to express themselves, and you have to be willing and able as a judge to see the difference. But those who come back to do it just for show and to laugh at us, no. This is professional, this is real. We won’t allow that. So we’ll tell you about yourself very quickly.”

Returning contestants are not always a bad thing, though, reveals Armstrong. The judge, who has been a main presence in the show from Season 1, admits it has happened that a not-so-amazing-dancer from a previous season has returned to audition and surprise the judges at how much they have improved. “You see some returns where you go really, you came back? And then you might just go wow, thank you for coming back! And then there’s a few you might go, oh goodie, but then you might go, erks – what happened?! That’s what I like about the show, it’s very surprising this year,” says Armstrong.

With all the amazing talent they get to witness at each of the five audition stops, it is challenging for the judges not to pick favourites among the contestants, even from such an early stage in the competition. “We usually have a good feeling about who will make top forty,” reveals McGrath. “We have those few stars that you know are going to go a long way.” However, McGrath makes a point to note that although the judges might have their favourites, it is up to the Canadian public in the end to decide who they think should be crowned winner. Leaving it in the hands of the people, however, doesn’t seem to worry Armstrong. “Our viewers get it,” she says confidently.

Following the premier episode, it seems that Canada is prepared for the challenge that lies ahead. With 1.1 million viewers having tuned in on Monday night, the show’s up an impressive 11% over last year’s premier, winning the slot of the number one program of the night. The question is, who will be Canada’s favourite this year, and will they be able to vote the right person through to the end once again?

Toronto-native Denys Drozdyuk, 25, having taken home the dancing crown in the season three finale along with his prize of $100,000 and a 2010 Mazda2, Armstrong says she is ready for a girl to win this time around. While there’s a possibility she is slightly biased in her aspirations – a fault she admits to – McGrath backs up his fellow judge, ensuring that the girls this season are truly amazing.

As a veteran of the show – McGrath was a finalist in the first season of the American So You Think You Can Dance back in 2005 – the judge can undoubtedly understand what it means to be in the contestants’ shoes. “It’s nice that I can lend a hand and be an inspiration for the kids,” he says. “They know I’ve been in their position and I think it’s nice for them to be able to look up to and I can just really help them out in that way that I’ve been through it and know that.”

“As judges, we’ve been given a responsibility to actually develop and invest into our dancers,” adds Armstrong. “Our job not only is to just see the surface; we have to look inside and see if there’s anything to pull. But we only have how many hours in a day to get there so we need those competitors to also step up and help us do that for them.”

With such a tough judging panel, the contestants definitely have their work cut out for them in putting together performances that leave the judges speechless. Yet Armstrong and McGrath have complete faith that this year’s contestants will produce no less.

“They have to let everything go, and just be real and honest with the work and the art,” says McGrath. “It’s not like a high school talent show; it’s something much more deep than that. Especially with the choreographers that they’re working with, we expect the best; they are the best, and so we want the kids to be the best as well.”

While the contestants put hours on end of hard work into every episode, the judges admit that all they must bring to the table each week is themselves, along with their outstanding knowledge and expertise. “We’ve done a lot of our own work, that’s why we’re here,” says Armstrong. “Because we’ve come up as dancers ourselves, it’s like we get it now. Now we just need to show up and be focused, but have fun and laugh a little. Dance shouldn’t always have to be so serious – enjoy it.”

When it comes to the remaining auditions, Armstrong has just one piece of advice that comes in the form of a saying which that rings true for everything in life – “Given the choice to choose, always choose not to lose.”

“Not everyone can afford the big designer clothes,” says Armstrong, “and its stance or struggle to get there. If you have a t-shirt with some little itty bitty jogging pants, wear it proudly, but make sure that your style and the way you put it together is coiffed and finished. Make the right choice. This is an audition. You can’t just come in your PJs and think you’re going to catch our attention just by dancing. You’re dancing will carry you, but you’re style and your confidence and your supernova – that inner star – bring that out. That’s what differentiates you. Be a personality and a person, not just someone in the in the street.”

So You Think You Can Dance Canada airs Monday at 8/7 C on CTV.

ABC airs “Dancing with the Stars,” MTV has “America’s Best Dance Crew,” FOX shows “So You Think You Can Dance” and Paula Abdul is the star of an upcoming CBS reality dance show.

But it’s not just a mere coincidence. The reason is simple: audiences are craving them. “So You Think You Can Dance Canada” is proof of this north of the boarder. Premiering in 2008, the Canadian reality show became an instant hit. The following year it ended season two with 11 per cent more viewers and an average audience of 1.43 million viewers.

“So You Think You Can Dance Canada has discovered some amazing talent over the past two seasons,” said CTV’s Susanne Boyce. “Show alumni are performing with Janet Jackson, Katy Perry, Alicia Keys, Ke$ha, and Adam Lambert, among others, making a statement about Canadian dance around the world.”

The third season kicked off Sunday at 9 p.m. EST. Performer and choreographer Blake McGrath — who’s a judge on the show — thinks this will be their biggest season yet. “I think it’s gonna be a stronger season for sure all around, from the choreography to the contestants,” he shared. “I’m really excited for it.”

For dancers hoping to make it onto the show, McGrath says the first step is training. Having confidence is a close second.

The reality show kicks off with Toronto auditions. Fans can catch weekly highlights and behind the scenes footage on demand at CTV.ca.

Keep track of the season three audition episodes with the list below:

· Sunday, August 15 at 9 p.m. ET (two hour premiere) – Toronto Auditions
· Monday, August 16 at 9 p.m. ET (two hours) – Calgary and Halifax Auditions
· Tuesday, August 17 at 8 p.m. ET (one hour) – Vancouver Auditions
· Wednesday, August 18 at 9 p.m. ET (two hours) – Montreal Auditions
· Thursday, August 19 at 9 p.m. ET (two hours) – Finals Week

As she was asked to set forward as part of the bottom three contestants for the week, Judge Nigel Lythgoe explained that he had talked with Ashley’s doctors and they had determined she would need at least three weeks off to recover from her injury. She must have seen it coming, but the dancer still broke into tears while thanking her fans.

“I feel like I wasn’t ready to go,” she told People.com. “It sucks.”

Judge Mia Michaels said that Ashley could have gone far in the competition and was a contender to win—not great news for the show. Last week Alex Wong, the clear favourite to win the competition, was cut from the show due to a serious injury to his Achilles tendon.

With top dancers being axed for reasons not relating to their dancing abilities, it’s a real question whether the most talented dancers will be the last ones standing or not.

On Thursday night Wong announced that he will be leaving the show and will be out for some time following a serious injury to his Achilles tendon. He will have surgery on Tuesday followed by a long three months of rest before he can get back to dancing.

“I’ve had an amazing time and I can’t get that anywhere else,” he tells People.com. “Not ever from day one did I ever think I was going for the gold.”

He said his goodbyes on the show and received a standing ovation from the judges, live audience, and likely teary-eyed fans watching from home. With his incredible skill, Alex Wong was a favourite to win the competition, but unfortunately for him, someone else will take the title.

“Alex is such a gift,” says SYTYCD judge Mia Michaels. “He is one of the greatest dancers, if not the greatest dancer that has ever come through our stage.”

This may not be the last we see of Alex, though. He tells People.com that “It’s a lot to give up but I would love to be back,” continuing, “I haven’t finished my journey. I have so much more to learn.”

Posted on andPOP:

While executive producer of the hit reality show So You Think You Can Dance, Nigel Lythgoe, has been fluttering around the news that the show’s upcoming season would see big changes for some time now, it is only recently that those changes have been revealed.

Here’s the low-down according to E! Online.com:

Each week, the dance contestants will be partnered with a So You Think You Can Dance All-Star, basically meaning that favourite dancers from past seasons will be back. The All-Stars will be put into a “pool,” as Lythgoe called it, and that is how partners and dance styles will be determined. “Instead of drawing the genre of dance out of a hat, contestants will draw a photograph of one of the All-Stars, and that will dictate the genre that they will be dancing,” Lythgoe told E! Online.

Other changes: instead of a top 20 dancers out of the Las Vegas boot camp week, it will only be a top 10. And each week, it will only be one dancer going home, not two. Each top 10 contestant will get a different All-Star (and therefore different genre of dance) every week. After the performance, the All-Star will exit the stage, leaving just the contestant left to face the judging panel.

“This will be the first time ever, apart from their solos, that they will walk forward alone to be judged,” Lythgoe said.

To pick the All-Stars, Lythgoe points out that it depends on their best dance style. “They had to be dominant in their genre, because they are the ones who are going to dictate what competitors are going to dance,” he said. He used hip-hop/break dancer Stephen “Twitch” Boss, the season-four runner-up, as an example. “You wouldn’t want to do ballroom with him, particularly.”

Lythgoe wouldn’t say who the All-Stars are, but said he will be revealing them one at a time via his Twitter account (@dizzyfeet) over the next few weeks.

And while there are some big changes to the show, some things will stay the same. For example, America will still vote to decide the bottom three contestants, and the judges will still have them “dance for their lives” with solo performances. And the always crazy Mary Murphy will still be on the judging panel, and this year she’s choreographing too. Together with guest judges, Lythgoe said, there will sometimes be four people on the panel.

And now that Paula Abdul is out of a judging job on American Idol, is she heading to SYTYCD?

“I can’t think of anybody better than Paula Abdul to judge on this show,” Lythgoe said. “Whether it’s the right time for her is up to her and her management. I certainly would love her at any point, even if it means having five bloody judges on the show!”

The two-hour season premiere comes to you on May 27.

Posted on andPOP:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Bollywood debut was so awkward I could barely watch, but I couldn’t look away either.

There has never been any mistaking Harper for a cool guy; an Obama-type personality. Harper belongs on TLC, not MTV, and that isn’t news. But his appearance on India’s version of So You Think You Can Dance reaffirmed that there really isn’t much personality under his tough conservative skin.

In early October, Harper performed on stage with famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Harper’s rendition of The Beatles’ With a Little Help From My Friends was actually…not too bad. It was the first time that many had seen Harper peek his head out of a Conservative shell that he’d been hiding in since he became Prime Minister. I started to cut him some slack.

But the on-stage embarrassment in India made me reassess my thought. Harper stumbled down a step on the stage as he was being introduced, and then proceeded to put on the most bland display of rhythm and dance that I’ve ever seen. Watching his wife Laureen was almost as disappointing.

Being a good dancer is by no means a Canadian Prime ministerial requirement, but cultural enthusiasm should be. Even George W used to get down. Loosen up Harper.

At the G-Star Raw fashion show, Deeley told E! News two people had already told her she deserved a nomination in the 20 minutes since she’d arrived at the show.

“I’m a little bit nervous about it though,” said the Brit about presenting. “I’ve done it back in England, and I’ve hosted award shows back in England, but I’ve never actually done it before here. But I’m excited, you know? It’s a really exciting thing to do. I’m having a whole plethora of dresses coming in. I know I’ve got Matthew Williamson and [Burberry's] Christopher Bailey sending me over things so far, but I’m sure there’ll be more.”

Deeley said she’s also nervous about her show making the switch from a summer reality show to a staple in Fox’s primetime line-up this fall.

“I’m approaching it with a little trepidation,” she said. “There’s one part of me that is actually like, ‘Oh goodness, it’s really competitive, and we’ve just finished the last season, so is it too much too soon?’ But then I turn around and I go, ‘Well, Fox seems to have confidence in us, and the audience loves the show, so provided we keep doing what we’re doing and do it bigger and better than ever before, we should be OK.’”

“We would love to have her on Dancing whether it’s as a contestant, or a participant, judge, etc.,” McPherson said of the former American Idol judge. “I was a little stunned by the decision,” he said about her recent departure from the Fox reality show where she worked for eight seasons. “I think she’s a huge talent. There’s a sensitivity and emotion in her that balances out Idol and we’d love to get a piece of that.”

Abdul has also been offered a spot as a guest judge on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance.

Season nine of American Idol, which will premiere in January, will return to the show’s three-judge format with Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi all resuming their spots at the judges’ table. Ryan Seacrest will remain as host.

Online. The actress performed an homage to Judy Garland choreographed by Tyce Diorio Thursday night on the reality show.

“I am f***ing INSULTED, Katie Holmes how dare you!,” Shanna Moakler wrote on Twitter. “I didn’t just grow up on musicals, I lived and breathed them, Oklahoma, Easter Parade, Family Band, don’t touch my legends! You’re not worthy.”

So You Think You Can Dance judge and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is angry about the negative reactions. He took to his Twitter to retaliate: “Why hate on Katie? She’s had no dance training and did this for publicity for the charity. Everyone lip synchs when they’re dancing. I’m going to ban all the Katie haters. You make me sick. Your attitude stops ‘stars’ doing charity work. Understand why she did it CHILDREN. I’m trying to figure out why Katie is being judged as a dancer. When a star throws out the opening pitch, no one says ‘Ooh, crap pitcher!’”

Holmes did the performance to show her support for the Dizzy Feet Foundation, a charity intended to support, improve and increase access to dance education in the United States. The charity was founded this year by Holmes, Lythgoe, director Adam Shankman and Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba.

Posted on andPOP:

As E! online so eloquently puts it, “For So You Think You Can Dance judge Nigel Lythgoe, there is no dancing around the issue.”

After defending his allegedly homophobic remarks via Twitter on Friday, Lythgoe has officially issued an apology at the urging of gay rights group GLAAD.

“I sincerely regret the fact that I have upset people with the poor word choices and comments I made both during the taping of theSo You Think You Can Dance audition and on my personal status update,” said Lythgoe. “I am not homophobic and it was extremely upsetting for me to be classed as such.”

The “I’m sorry” comes as the result of comments made by the judge during an audition by same-sex dance partners Misha Belfer and Mitchel Kibel, as well as his continuing justification of his actions online the following day.

On Thursday’s premiere, Lythgoe critiqued the duo’s samba, saying ”We’ve always had the guys dance together on the show, but they’ve never really done it in each other’s arms before. I’d like to see you both dancing with a girl.”

As if GLAAD wasn’t already up in arms, Lythgoe then tweeted about the controversy, comparing the dancers to two separate films. “The same-sex ballroom guys did remind me of Blades of Glory. However, I’m not a fan of Brokeback ballroom.”

Posted on andPOP:

Kherington Payne, a top 10 finalist on this season’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” has landed a major role in the upcoming remake of the ’80s classic “Fame.”

The 18-year-old contemporary dancer will play Alice, a character originally slated to be a ballerina but now recast as an aspiring contemporary dancer from New York.

Payne, from Orange County, auditioned and won the part after being approached by a talent agency while on tour with the cast of “SYTYCD.”

“Fame” follows an ensemble of characters who are all trying to succeed in the entertainment industry.

The original 1980 movie won two Academy Awards, for best original score and best song (“Fame”).

The remake will be directed by Kevin Tancharoen, who has worked on videos for Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson and also directed Britney Spears’ Onyx Hotel tour.

Besides Payne, the cast includes Thomas Dekker (“The Sarah Connor Chronicles”), Kay Panabaker (“Summerland”) and Naturi Naughton (formerly of pop group 3LW).

The film will begin shooting in December, for a September 2009 release.

Posted on andPOP:

Joshua Allen was crowned America’s favourite dancer last night.

The 19-year-old street dancer from Texas won the fourth season of So You Think You Can Dance last night, beating out fellow street dancer Stephen “Twitch” Boss, contemporary dancer Katee Shean, and jazz dancer Courtney Galiano.

“I just want to say that, never let anybody tell you you can’t do anything, because no matter what you do, you can always go forward,” said Allen, who had to do chores at his local dance school in exchange for lessons. “The sky’s the limit!”

As the winner of SYTYCD, Allen gets $250,000 in prize money, plus a part in the upcoming movie Step Up 3D, produced by Hairspray director and SYTYCD guest judge Adam Shankman.

Before he makes his debut onto the big screen, Allen will be hitting more stages across North America for the SYTYCD tour.

Ten other dancers made the cut–Twitch, Katee, Courtney, Mark Kanemura, Chelsie Hightower, Will Wingfield, Comfort Fedoke, Gev Manoukian, Kherington Payne, and Jessica King, who dropped out due to an injury after making it into the top 10.

Canadian fans can catch Allen and the rest of the top 10 in Toronto in October. Tickets are now on sale through Ticketmaster.

Mary Murphy, one of the show’s judges, told People magazine that the contestants “went in [Saturday] and so there was no more rehearsals, and today [Sunday] all the rehearsals were called off. The kids are completely dehydrated – two of them. I’m sure they’re doing a lot of blood work to see if there’s anything else.”

Though the names of the contestants who collapsed haven’t been released, the final four are Stephen ‘Twitch’ Boss, Joshua Allen, Katee Shean, and Courtney Galiano.

The two healthier contestants were not allowed to continue rehearsing, to be fair to the others.

Murphy explained that the ill contestants had been pushing themselves too hard in preparation for the final. “They want it so bad,” she said, “so, they keep pushing themselves and pushing themselves and not letting anybody know that, ‘Hey, I’m running on empty,’ and then it catches up on them and then they collapse.”

This isn’t the first time injury has struck the set of the reality competition this year. Top 10 finalist Jessica had to leave the competition due to cracks ribs.

Posted on andPOP:

Fans of “High School Musical” need to get ready for their newest love: MTV’s new movie musical “The American Mall.”

To help introduce their audience slowly, before mind-boggling obsession will inevitably set in, MTV will launch the official web site today, www.vmtv.com.

The virtual Mall site allows fans to get to know the cast, including “The O.C” star Autumn Reeser, “Degrassi: The Next Generation” cast member Nina Dobrev, and dreamy “So You Think You Can Dance” contestant Neil Haskell. The site includes virtual tours of the set, video diaries, and exclusive photos and footage.

Fans can then blog about the movie, and attend events, like the virtual karaoke party on August 22.

The movie, airing Monday, August 11, “is the story of Ally, a hardworking young woman whose mother has owned a music shop that’s been the soul of the mall ever since it opened when Ally was a kid. Ally’s singer/songwriter dreams seem to come closer to fruition when she meets Joey, a musician who’s moonlighting as a janitor at the mall in order to support his own rock star ambitions. While Joey understands her songs (and heart) like no one else, Ally’s happiness and the fate of the music store are threatened when the mall owner’s spoiled daughter Madison – who will stop at nothing to get what she wants – becomes involved.”

The soundtrack will be available in stores the day after it airs.

Jessica King has suffered a mysterious injury that is said to need five weeks to heal. She will be replaced by B-girl Comfort Fedoke, who was the last female voted off the show.

In a press release, producer Nigel Lythgoe stated “how sorry I am that Jessica cannot continue dancing in the competition at the advice of her doctor. Her full recovery is paramount and will only come with rest. We are fortunate that Comfort has agreed to rejoin the competition and know that under the circumstances she has Jessica’s full support.” He said he could not reveal the nature of the injury, but that King herself would speak about it on a later episode.

This week, America’s voted will determine who leaves the competition.

Posted on andPOP:

There’s a new reality television couple in town – but they were both contestants on different shows.

OK! Magazine reports that last season’s “So You Think You Can Dance” finalist Lacey Schwimmer is dating current “American Idol” contestant David Cook.

The couple apparently met at the “Idol Gives Back” special, and Cook has been sneaking off day and night to make time with his salsa sweetheart.
