NHL Welcomes ‘The Next One,’ Sidney Cosby

Posted by andPOP Staff on July 30th, 2005

It’s a dream come true for Sidney Crosby.

Crosby’s dream of playing in the National Hockey League officially became a reality today in Ottawa as the 17-year old from Cole Harbour, N.S., was selected first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The scaled down version of the NHL Entry Draft capped off a busy week for NHL clubs, general managers and players as preparations are being made to kick-start the 2005-06 season on Oct. 5.

After winning the coveted number one position in the first ever draft lottery held last week, there was no doubt the Penguins would call Sidney Crosby?s name.

The Magnificent One, Mario Lemieux accompanied Penguins? GM Craig Patrick and scouting staff for the team up to the podium to welcome Crosby to the NHL. Lemieux is looking forward to having Crosby a member of the Penguins organization and has even offered Sidney a room in his Pittsburgh mansion for a year or two.

Following the draft lottery, ticket sales in the Steel City began soaring for the up-coming season. Earning the right to draft Crosby is indeed a lottery win for the lowly NHL franchise that has struggled both on and off the ice in recent years.

After being drafted first overall in 1984 by the Pens, Lemieux was able to save the Pittsburgh Penguins on many occasions by leading the team to two consecutive Stanley Cup victories in 1991 and 1992 and rescuing the club from bankruptcy in 1999 when he became majority owner, chairman of the board and CEO of the Penguins.

There are high expectations being put on Crosby, the new saviour of the franchise to perform.

With this newfound life given to the Penguins organization, all of a sudden Pittsburgh has become a desirable hockey market for many of the hundred free agents.

Lemieux has mentioned the team will be looking to add a few skilled players to the roster to enhance Crosby?s talents. Rumours are circling that unrestricted free agent Alex Kovalev may be back in Pittsburgh, the city that he played his best hockey. Some speculation arose earlier this week that Toronto Maple Leafs tough guy Tie Domi may be on his way to Pittsburgh as well to serve as more of a bodyguard for young Sidney.

The addition of Crosby also brings along an exciting possibility to get Evgeni Malkin, the team?s first-round pick in 2004, signed so that he and Crosby can begin their NHL journeys together.

It is expected Sid the Kid will play his first NHL game Oct. 5 when the Penguins play the Devils in New Jersey. Oct. 5 also happens to be Lemieux?s 40th birthday.

In a perfect hockey world on opening night, Sidney Crosby will be centering Pittsburgh?s top line along with Mario Lemieux and Mark Recchi as the Penguins begin their rebuilding process.

Frantic Friday in the NHL; Crosby Set for Pittsburgh

Posted by andPOP Staff on July 22nd, 2005

It was a busy Friday afternoon for the National Hockey League today as the new collective bargaining agreement was officially ratified unanimously by the League’s board of governors 30-0 in New York City.

This vote comes one day after the NHL Players? Association voted 87 per cent in favour of the new CBA yesterday in Toronto.

Commissioner Gary Bettman was pleased to announce the lockout that wiped out the entire 2004-05 season was over.

Bettman was joined by director of player operations Colin Campbell and 17 year NHL veteran Brendan Shanahan during his press conference where the Commissioner introduced some new rules that will be in effect this fall.

Some of the new rules fans can look forward to seeing on the ice this season include: no centre red line, tag up offside, restriction on goaltenders handling the puck behind the net, moving the nets two feet back, reducing the neutral zone from 54 feet to 50 feet and a shoot out to determine tied games.

The schedule will also be slightly different from previous years; teams will play their divisional rivals eight times as oppose to six, play against other teams within their conference four times and play only 10 games against teams from the opposite conference. This format is intended to boast rivalries and intensify the passion felt by both the players and the fans.

As if the official ?Game On? announcement was not enough, the NHL held the draft lottery to determine the order in which the teams will be making their picks next Saturday in Ottawa. Through the luck of the draw, the Pittsburgh Penguins earned the right to draft ?the Next One? Sidney Crosby.

The off-season frenzy begins tomorrow as teams can begin buying out player contracts and qualifying restricted free agents. Unrestricted free agency begins August 1.

Saviours of the NHL?

Posted by andPOP Staff on July 19th, 2005

The gold medal game at this year’s World Junior Championships saw Canada face a highly skilled Russian squad. The game also featured an intriguing match up, Sidney Crosby vs. Alexander Ovechkin.

The first pick overall in the 2004 entry draft selected by the Washington Capitals, Ovechkin became the first Russian-born player to be selected in the number one position. Along with his speed, skill and offensive abilities, Ovechkin attracted a lot of attention during the World Junior tournament due to his flashy mirrored visor and brash behaviour both on and off the ice.

Canada?s 6-1 romp over Russia in the final game dissolved a lot of the hype surrounding the clash of the two teenage hockey phenoms. Though Crosby went home with a gold medal around his neck, the outcome of the game cannot be viewed as a fair assessment of either player.

In all fairness, Crosby only had one assist and Ovechkin left the game mid-way through the second period suffering a separated shoulder after enduring, in succession, four bone-crunching body checks by Team Canada. This injury forced Ovechkin to miss almost a month?s worth of games with the Dynamo Moscow squad of the Russian Super League.

On Aug. 1, Sidney Crosby will walk up to the podium at the Corel Centre in Ottawa and put on a NHL sweater just like Ovechkin had done over a year ago. Let the comparisons begin!

When the NHL resumes play this fall, the League will be in dire need of a way to win back fans following an entire season missed due to the lockout. The NHL will be looking for a saviour or two to market the sport around. The obvious solution is to increase goal scoring by allowing the skilled players room to shine?this just so happens to be Crosby and Ovechkin?s fort?.

There is no doubt that both Crosby and Ovechkin will be permanent fixtures on a NHL roster, most likely this year. And only when both young men are playing in the League can the real debate over who in fact is the better prospect can begin.

If there is something NHL fans should get excited about is young, skilled players like Crosby and Ovechkin who will be turning on the red goal light many, many times. Bring it on boys! It should be interesting.

Sidney Crosby to be Drafted August 1

Posted by andPOP Staff on July 19th, 2005

June 25, 2005, was to be the day the NHL would have drafted the next Wayne Gretzky. However, for Sidney Crosby and almost 300 other young, talented hockey players, the 2005 NHL Entry Draft never happened…yet that is!

As a result of no new collective bargaining agreement put in place by both the League and the Players’ Association earlier enough, the draft, scheduled to be held at the Corel Centre in Ottawa, was cancelled.

Over the past month, the NHL and the NHLPA have been able to constructively negotiate a solid framework for a new CBA.

Last Wednesday, the two sides announced the tentative agreement, which is expected to be ratified by both the owners and the players by the end of this week.

With the announcement of the tentative CBA, many important dates were outlined; such as free agency, buy out timeline and the draft.

When the NHL announced the cancellation of the draft, they reassured the players eligible this year and the fans that a toned down version of the entry draft would be conducted once a new CBA had been agreed upon.

Sticking to their promise, the NHL announced that Monday, August 1, in Ottawa will be the date and venue of the modified draft where only the top prospects will be invited to attend.

Dubbed the Sidney Crosby Sweepstakes, the main question surrounding the draft is, what team will hold the number one pick overall, thus earning the right to draft ?the Next One??

By the end of this week, one general manager will know for sure whose name he will be calling up on Aug. 1. The NHL has decided to hold a weighted lottery draw to determine the drafting order.

The lottery formula is based on teams? past success. Each team began with three balls, for every four playoff appearances, and if the club has previously held the number one pick in the last three years, a ball was removed.

In the end the Buffalo Sabers, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins have three balls to their credit. As far as Canadian teams are concerned, both Calgary and Edmonton have two balls; Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver have only one ball in the lottery.

The 2005 Entry Draft slated for June 25-26 was cancelled on March 24, 2005 as negotiations were unproductive in finding a resolve for a new CBA.
