Selena Gomez provided my favourite insight during the Q&A portion of TIFF’s Spring Breakers premiere. She said: “It’s really hard to find a teen movie that tells the truth and shows what’s raw and real.”
I can’t say I personally know anyone my age that funds their hedonist exploits by robbing and threatening to blow the f*cking heads off customers at fast food joints with booze-filled water guns. But director Harmony Korine is painting a broader portrait of a selfish, Jersey Shore-loving generation that becomes young, wild and free completely disillusioned during their “break from reality.” And we sure as hell all know college kids like that.
Plot
Faith (Selena Gomez) is a Jesus-thumping undergrad who is disillusioned by the banality of her life. She eagerly follows her childhood friends, played by Hudgens, Pretty Little Liars’ Ashley Benson and Korines’ wife Rachel, on their illegally funded spring break vacation to Florida.
While Faith is encouraged by her “spiritual retreat” — even wishing to make her pause from reality infinite — her fun is over when the ladies land in jail and meet a cornrowed hustler named Alien (James Franco). Just as Faith’s spring break vacation ends, it just gets started for her thrill-seeking friends.
Three things I loved
The cast
The film isn’t for the faint of heart, nor is it necessarily for Gomez and Hudgens’ fans. The Disney stars smoke bongs and dance alongside breast-baring partiers during their violent and sexual retreat. Teen idol haters might be pleasantly surprised by all the actresses’ adaptability, particularly during some raunchy scenes with Benson, Hudgens and Franco, that couldn’t have been comfortable to shoot… for the girls anyway.
Direction (and see photos from the premiere below)
The Spring Breakers
Ashley Benson donned a beautiful couture dresses and hung out with BFFs and co-stars Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez at the Venice premiere of Spring Breakers. Her job is very difficult. It requires her to submit to the idea of fun, wave to adoring fans and wear a stunning designer outfit.
One Direction
Officials were wondering why so many teen girls fainted precisely six minutes ago until they realized One Direction tweeted a photo of Harry Styles and Zayn Malik looking devilishly handsome rehearsing for tomorrow night’s VMAs. The county sheriff’s department is investigating.

In the past few months, there’s been countless candids floating around from the set of Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers. You can’t help but realize that this movie isn’t going to be anything but a racier image to what some of these co-star’s have done in the past. Ashley Benson told JustJared: “It’s more edgy and it’s a little bit darker and I just play an insane character, but it was fun.” The movie won’t be released until early next year, but will be making a couple debuts at film festivals around the world.
The film follows four friends (Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens, Rachel Korine) as they head to Florida for spring break, but end up behind bars after robbing a restaurant. A couple drug dealers bail them out (why aren’t they in jail..) but the price the girls have to pay is doing some dirty work.
In the clip, Selena Gomez who seems to be in a jail cell says: “I’m so tired of seeing the same thing every single day. Everybody’s miserable here because everybody sees the same things. They wake up in the same bed, the same houses… same depressing streetlights. One gas station. The grass, it’s not even green it’s brown. Everything is the same and everyone’s just sad.”

TREND: Briefcase inspired bags

I was always excited to go back to school because it meant getting to buy new things. Asides from the obligatory pens and notebooks, September also meant a new school bag. Just in case you wanted to look a little different from your Hershel Supply Co. and Jansport toting friends, why not try buying a briefcase? While classic Cambridge satchel has been making it rounds last year with its eye-popping neon shades, their bags also come in good old brown, black and navy. A cheaper alternative is to dig through a couple of vintage stores or flea markets. I bought mine for $20 last year and I’m still getting compliments on it.

TREND: Knit Sweaters

This is probably looking like the old man trend report right now, but I can’t help that Selena Gomez’s Teen Vogue shoot continues to inspire me. Oversized knit sweaters are worlds away from this summer’s light, neon accented style. Also, I really can’t think of anything better than cozing up in a big sweater on a cold, crisp fall morning. It’ll add texture to any look and is less frightening than the mohair sweaters from a couple of seasons ago. Don’t forget to also keep an eye out for chic, not Christmas cheesy, graphics to keep your look interesting.
INSPIRATION: Selena Gomez
WTF: Leather toe shoes

First of all, I just want to say that I understand the point of toe shoes. I’ve watched two Ironman triathlons and have heard about the benefits of walking around (almost) bare feet. Also, I know leather sneakers are becoming more acceptable in the workplace but leather toe shoes have gone too far.
These pair of leather toes shoes from Vibram made their way around the menswear tradeshows and will potentially enter the market next year. They’re supposed to be workplace friendly, but I personally think it will ruin any professional look you manage to put together. Seriously, would you be able to take anyone seriously if you saw their feet encased in those? I wouldn’t because I know there are beautiful pairs of double monks and leather loafers you could’ve bought instead.

The Internet basically exploded the other day when Miley revealed her drastically different haircut on Twitter. The cut is being described as a mashup between Twiggy, Tinker Bell and Harry Potter‘s Draco Malfoy. Not everyone can pull it off like Miley, so Pop Crush decided to play around with Photoshop and see how other celebs look with her new do.
The result? Most people can’t pull off the Miley Cyrus haircut.

TREND: One-Piece Swim Suits
There may be a month left of summer (@shitgirlssay: “This summer’s going by so fast!”), but you’ll probably spend it at the beach, right? Just in case you’re getting tired of your bikinis or realized you spent all summer eating delicious food instead of working on your beach bod (GPOY), one piece suits are the solution. They are a far cry from the old boring suits as cut outs and deep v’s add some sexy details. One piece suits also give designers room for more interesting prints, so keep a look out for great graphics. Better yet, they’re probably on sale right now as the “50 per cent off” signs go up while the summer winds down.

TREND: Denim shirts
It’s a trend that’s been quietly growing for a while, but one I’ve been hesitant about. I kept flashing back to photos of myself from the nineties where I’m rocking pretty awful Canadian tuxedos. Now, I become jealous instead of embarrassed as I see more and more bloggers (both men and women) looking dapper as they rock the American classic. Thankfully, the cuts on both denim shirts and jeans are more flattering, and the fabric supple and soft. The denim shirt’s soft blue hue makes it easy to pair with a nice pair of dark-wash jeans or skirt which can create a more dressed-down, but not sloppy, look. You could also try pairing it with those coloured jeans you invested in back in spring to help build on that wardrobe of yours.
INSPIRATION: Selena Gomez on the cover of Teen Vogue
WTF: Griz Coats
I always appreciate design created with humour and these Griz Coats are no exception. I’ve categorized this Kickstarter project under the WTF? section because it’s what I’d be thinking if I ever saw someone wearing this on the streets. On their Kickerstarter page, the company Buffoonery Factory claims the coat is “highly appropriate for: Halloween, Bay to Breakers, Monday morning meetings, most weddings, Tuesday morning meetings, high school reunions, and first dates.” Halloween, yes, but the rest, not so much. I’d still buy one but save it for the house on cold, Canadian mornings.
Apparently Teen Vogue wasn’t as forthcoming as Seventeen Magazine when 14-year-old Julia Bluhm asked them to stop Photoshopping their models and celebrities in mid-July. Instead of the tour and cupcakes the ladies were met with at Seventeen, they just got cold hard stares from the editors of Teen Vogue.
While that’s totally uncool, it’s nice to see that their September issue is a little more subdued and natural looking — something teen girls can ACTUALLY relate to. Selena Gomez looks GORG on the cover and inside spread, wearing little makeup, frolicking with horses by the ocean and relaxing on the beach.

In the behind the scenes video, girl raves about wearing cozy sweaters (probably Justin’s) and casual jeans. The 20-year-old also talks about taking more mature movie roles and choosing pieces for her fashion line (no biggie). Compared to her other two cover shoots with the magazine, this is by far her most laid-back. LOVE.

How could he be so bold?

A picture’s worth a thousand words and gif is worth even more. Kristen Stewart is giving director Rupert Sanders a bit of ‘tude while motioning to his crotch. In reality, she probably just said something really mundane like “Wow, what nice jacket lapels.” [Jessica Messica]
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez record a sex tape NOT

Come on guys! JB and Selena Gomez would never 1) Record a sex tape on an iPhone 2) Be careless enough to leave the iPhone in Starbucks. Did you buy the satirical report by Hollywood Leek and Best Movies Ever?

Taylor Swift

When it came to last night’s Teen Choice Awards, there were no glaring sartorial errors. If I had one complaint it’s that some of the styles were a little safe and boring. We saw tons of classic silhouettes and brights colours walking down the pink carpet.
Taylor Swift (above) was the big winner of the night, snatching her 20th trophy, which is the most won by a female artist EVER. Last night she won five awards: choice female artist, female country artist, single by a female artist for “Eyes Open,” country song for “Sparks Fly” and choice movie voice for “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.” WOA. She wins as one of my favourite stylistas of the night, opting for a white dress by Maria Lucia Hohan. The back was beautifully cut and I love the sheer straps.

One of the worst best parts of reading celebrity gossip rags is that they justify your seemingly banal life by providing photo evidence of celebrity GODS (in their books) doing the exact same thing you did just a couple days ago. The best part is that they feature the photos non-ironically, as though they actually believe celebrities are a different species, to be studied from an anthropological perspective. ”Hey look!” they say. “Alexander Skarsgard also uses grocery baskets to store his eggs and Hamburger Helper. Gosh, here I though I was the only one. What a relief”
Check out Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth (above) skateboarding down the street. I was sure they were chartered around their city in roomy private jets. In fact, sometimes they’ll skate down the street just to get Freezie.
I confirm it’s true. The celebrities that walk among us aren’t pods. They are REAL people. Just like you. And I will prove it. [Note: Our version is meant to be ironic.]
They take cheesy tourist photos!!
Check out Jelena (FYI that’s Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber) posing in front of a graffitied-wall in Japan. Selena tweeted: ”Hi Japan. I heart you.” I’m pretty sure I have this exact same photo in much less spectacular places, including my local dog-friendly park and in front of the fireplace for a family Christmas card. Note that Jelena resorted to the awkward “I don’t know what to do with my hands, screw it I’ll just do the peace sign” pose, JUST LIKE YOU. What a relief.
They grocery shop!!

I was confident celebrities sent minions to pick up their celery and wheatgrass shots but some of them deign to set foot in a grocery store. Taylor Swift even wheels her own cart. Just like you. What a relief.

TREND: Embellished collars
If there’s an opportunity to add a bit of an edge to a rather conservative piece of clothing, I’ll always take it. Embellished collars usually do the trick. Studs on a good oxford or pearls on a peter pan collar make a statement on their own. You can also wear a collar necklace if you want the same effect, without the bulk of the shirt on a hot summer’s day.

Ladies and gents, better hide your mothers before Harry Styles can get to them.
Well, at least that’s what Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber plan on doing.
Revealing in an interview with The Mirror, Selena admitted that her boyfriend Justin told her he wants to keep the cougar-loving Harry away from their moms!
Seeing that Styles can have his pick on any lady, Gomez said she knows the One Direction crooner has his eye on the older women!!
“We know some beautiful young women in the industry who have major crushes on Harry,” she said.
“He could probably pretty much take his pick from the hottest young girls in Hollywood. But from what Justin has been telling me, it’s not the young girls he’s looking at! I guess you just can’t blame him when you see how hot women such as Cameron Diaz, Eva Longoria and Sofia Vergara look. Both me and Justin still have really hot mom sand Justin was like, ‘Harry might have become one of my best buddies, but with his record we need to keep him away from our mums.’”
Justin’s mom Pattie, 37, and Selena’s mom Mandy, 36, both had their famous children at young ages. Harry on the other hand, once dated TV personality Caroline Flack, who is 14 years his senior at the age of 32.
I’m sorry, but I find this piece of news hilarious and just a bit ridiculous. We all know Harry loves older women, but it’s not like he won’t date someone his own age!
Nice joke, Justin.
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were strategically brought in the middle of a badass congress debate surrounding Arizona’s “Show Me Your Papers” law. Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez introduced the guessing game ‘Spot the Immigrant’ and during round two (around 2:19) he revealed flashcards of the happy celebrity couple.
“I’m sure Justin helped Gomez learn all about American customs and feel more at home in her adopted country. Oh wait a minute, I’m sorry!” he said sarcastically. “I somehow got that backwards. Actually Ms. Gomez of Texas has helped Mr. Bieber of Canada learn about his adopted country. Justin, when you perform in Phoenix remember to bring your papers.”
Of course, Bieber was born in Canada. The congressman was trying to show how you can’t judge a person’s origin by their appearance. We love that he busted out the celebrity flashcards, considering it’s a decent pull for the younger crowd and is outside of the politico box.

Our favourite celebrities are usually so glammed up in dramatic costumes and makeup that it’s hard to imagine what they looked like as dimple-cheeked kids. From their perspective, a home video surfacing on YouTube must be like when a proud parent pulls out an embarrassing photo of your first successful potty training lesson to scare your new date (wait, that doesn’t happen to everyone?).
Luckily, these videos aren’t that embarrassing. In fact, they’re pretty adorable.
Kreayshawn
Without the heavy liquid eyeliner, Kreayshawn is barely recognizable. She posted this video on YouTube a couple days ago with the comment: “I decided to put some old footage of me up so you guys can see a little of how I grew up and some things that inspired me to be who I am today. It is pretty damn hilarious. I have always been a free spirt and I hope this video inspires young girls too. You can do anything you wanna do.”
Lady Gaga
When I was seven years old I could play “Hot Cross Buns” on the piano but here’s Lady Gaga basically being a little piano prodigy. The video, which was shot in 1993, is short, sweet and foreshadows what was to come… well, except for her daring sense of fashion. Who knew this headband-wearing pianist would later wear a smelly meat dress on the red carpet?

In the final part of Selena Gomez’s web-series “Postcards from the Road” she talks about how much she’s learned from her South American fans.
In the clip she performs “Who Says” for her Sao Paulo fans and talks about how they inspire her to be a better performer.
We’re not sure if these two kids really have a shot at marrying Selena Gomez considering she’s probably not a polygamist, they’re pretty young and duh, she’s dating Justin Bieber. Nevertheless, I admire their dedication and respect for marriage proposals with high production value.
The two kids met Selena at at the meet and greet for her perfume wearing T-shirts that said “forget Justin & marry me.” Now they wrote and produced a personalized version of JB’s “Boyfriend” and dance to it with an entourage of female sidekicks in their music video. What romantics!

Trend: Ombré nails

Inspiration: Rihanna
While everyone seems to be dying their hair ombré (where the colour gradually changes from dark to light), for those indecisive folk, try your hand at ombré nails. It’s a lot easier to change up nail colours rather than hair colour. There are varying nail tutorials on the Internet, but the sponge technique seems to the be the easiest. It may seem hard at first, but practice makes perfect!
