Hip-hop star SEAN PAUL is changing his name to Sean P for the release of his debut solo album this summer.

The YoungBloodz rapper is recording the new CD in Atlanta, Miami and Los Angeles and promises it will feature a number of high profile collaborations.

Meanwhile, the star is preparing to tour US army bases throughout Asia, according to AllHipHop.com.

He says, “Our soldiers are in need of some good ole’ down south Crunk entertainment. Everyday, these guys put their lives on the line for freedom that we take for granted – it’s because of them that I have the freedom to do what I do. They are true heroes.”

New Sean Paul Video on the Way

Any day now, you’ll be seeing a new Sean Paul music video in rotation on the music stations.

“We just shot ‘Temperature’ and then it goes into another record called, ‘Breakout’,” Mr. X, who directed the video, told andPOP this week.

“‘Temperature’ is about the seasons, the changing of the seasons. And ‘Breakout’ is just dancing, raw, crazy, people doing crazy dancing.”

The tracks appear on Paul’s latest album, “The Trinity,” which was released in September.

Sean Paul Says Canadian Hip-Hop Going in Right Direction

Sean Paul Week on andPOP concludes with the dancehall superstar looking at the Canadian urban music scene.

In Canada, hip-hop is a genre that has grown exponentially in the last half decade, but has yet to produce a substantial impact south of the border.

Saukrates, Choclair and Kardinal Offishall have all had American distribution deals, and k-os earned a Source Award for best international album, but rampant international success is still foreign to these artists.

Sean Paul, who has family living in Canada and who has toured the country several times, says it’s just a matter of time before Americans start hearing more Canadian hip-hop on their radios.

“I think a lot of people in the Canadian industry, sometimes they feel that sense of doubt from people on the American side because there’s not been much people to blow up from that industry,” he says.

Paul has several connections to the urban scene in Canada, and appeared on one of the most played Canadian hip-hop songs of all time, “Money Jane,” which also featured Kardinal, Jully Black, and the now defunct Baby Blue Soundcrew.

“Canada on a whole is a place that’s culture is diverse and mixed up so sometimes its own hip-hop culture kind of takes a backseat and different music such as the hip-hop from America and dancehall and soca music infiltrated the [Canadian] hip-hop game,” he says.

Kardinal just released his long-awaited “Fire and Glory” album in Canada and hopes to soon release the project in the U.S.

“Kardinal is a hard working dude and I wish him all the best,” says Paul. “There’s someone who I work with in Atlantic [Records] who’s one of his people in his camp, Mr. Morgan. Mr. Morgan is working hard and so is Kardinal and I’m sure he’ll be able to break through.”

One of Sean Paul’s biggest hits was his collaboration with Beyonce Knowles, “Baby Boy.” The song was just becoming big around the time of the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, so the pair was asked to perform.

But when Knowles hit the stage and started performing, Paul could be seen in the audience, not singing by her side.

In the weeks following, reports indicated that Jay-Z was jealous and forbade his girl from sharing the stage with another guy (specifically, Sean Paul).

Paul was prepared to perform, he says, and still does not know why he was prevented from doing so.

Here is his complete version of what went down:

“It was blown out of proportion but I was pretty pissed.

“They had called me for rehearsal and were like, ‘yo, let’s do this,’ and I was like, ‘ok.’ The day before when I was supposed to find out about rehearsal, no one is telling me where to go. I was calling people frantically and not getting back any calls. So I go to the press conference the day before and hear her inside doing the song, so I was like, ‘why am I not there for rehearsal?’ And they were like, ‘oh I think they’re just playing the song. It’s not really anything going on in there.’

“So I go to the show and I see her at the show and she had just won her first award and I was just about to present an award to I think Eminem. And she was coming off stage and I was there backstage and she saw me and she came up to me and I said, ‘what’s up?’ And she said, ‘I’m sorry we couldn?t do the song.’ And I didn?t know that meant she was going to do it. I heard her say, ‘I’m sorry we couldn’t do the song together.’ At the time, I didn?t ask her why can’t we. I just said to her, ‘well, ok, you have a different show schedule; you’re going to do some different songs. But this song is real big right now. It’s getting big on the Billboard charts. It’s number one here and there. So when you’re ready to promote it B, I’m ready.’

“And she was like, ‘ok good.’ And then she left and came down from the roof. And I was sitting in the crowd and I was like, ‘damn what’s that all about?’ Paris Hilton and her sister were sitting behind me like, ‘why ain’t you up there?’ I said, ‘I don?t know.’ I was embarrassed and I was also upset. It did blow out of proportion as to all the rumours about Jay and the jealousy and all that. I don?t know the reason for me not being on that stage while she was doing that song.”

Don’t expect to hear a Jay-Z and Sean Paul collaboration any time soon, but with Paul’s no-beef attitude, you never know.

“I don?t keep beef, dude. Anyone who wants to work with me, that?s fine.”

Sean Paul Helping Other Artists Get a Break

Despite starting his career in the mid-90s, Sean Paul didn’t get widely noticed until he started working with other artists.

“When I first started out in Jamaica, I felt like I was on the top of my game. I was trying to bridge the gap and I would reach out to people on tour like Tony Touch and Rahzel,” Paul says. “When I was there 10 years ago, I had to wait till 2001 to actually do work with a hip-hop artist or producer or someone at that level that was being noticed more than dancehall.”

On “The Trinity,” Paul collaborated with Wayne Marshall, and knows how big a help that could be to Marshall’s career.

“Wayne Marshall started in 2001 and really became popular in Jamaica in 2002 and 2003. Relatively, it’s quicker than a helpful hand can come to him. By me turning around and saying, ‘I need to work with Wayne in the game,’ in that respect, it’s a lot of help, and a lot more than I got.”

Sean Paul Week on andPOP continues with his thoughts on some hot topics.

On his big break?
“In New York in 2000, I was breaking through on radio. I was talking to VP Records because I needed a video. We did finally shoot the video for the song that was hot, which was Just Give Me the Light, and we came to [Toronto] to do it. After MTV and BET happened to me, it’s a different world now. A lot of people know me now. That was a pinnacle point.”

On winning a Grammy?
“The Grammy Award does mean something to me, to be honoured in that respect. I don?t really hold the esteem of like, ‘oh it?s the Grammys,’ and whatnot. Just the regular everyday people on the road telling me, ‘yo that?s hot dude. I like that shit. Keep doing your thing.’ Because you are at the Grammys in a suit and you try to be well behaved because there are cameras all over. It’s a different kind of event. It don?t mean as much as a kid on the street or some ladies screaming. That stuff feels a lot better. I’d rather have girls throwing panties.”

On Shaggy?
“Any son of Jamaica that can sell 15 million worldwide, you have to respect that. You also have to respect the young ones coming up who are getting major radio play right now. Each one helps one. If I came and sold 6 million all over the world and then I came back home and nobody else was getting no radio play, then I would feel like I fucking suck. I would feel like maybe I was just a passing fade. But then Elephant Man came after me, and Wayne Wonder and Rhianna down in the Caribbean, and Kevin Lyttle and Rupee and the whole reggaeton movement. If that shit wasn’t taking off, then I would feel like a passing fad. But now I know I’ve helped to spawn this shit. I’ve helped to make other people see the light that this music can sell millions, so when Shaggy did that, he showed me the light. Each one do help one now.”

Sean Paul Addresses His Doubters

Nobody would have blamed Sean Paul if he felt nervous or pressure creating the follow-up to his breakout album, “Dutty Rock,” which sold six million copies worldwide.

But he insists he felt no pressure whatsoever.

“I don?t let people make me feel pressure,” Paul tells andPOP. “The only person that’s supposed to limit one’s self is the human brain. My brain is telling me keep doing it; don?t let people limit you; do what you’ve been doing since the beginning, which is maintaining that and feeling what is right for you.

“I’m the one in the streets. I’m the one walking around to different places everyday. I know what people like and dislike. I’m feeling the personal effects of it when I go onstage all over the world. That?s why I follow my feelings.”

His follow-up album, “The Trinity,” was the highest-selling reggae debut in the history of Soundscan, with over 100,000 copies sold in its first week in October.

“My feeling is to give people back the trinity, to give people the young energy and synergy of Jamaican producers and entertainers. Dancehall music blew up big all over the world. Willie Nelson and Jessica Simpson is doing it. They don?t go home to Jamaica to do it. These people need to respect that.”

He gets upset when asked if he felt the pressure, and even wrote a song to address the topic, “Change the Game,” which appears on the album.

“People are pissing me off about if I could do it again, if I feel stress. Until I wrote that song, I was getting that question everyday from different people. These doubters, that’s so doubtful to ask that question. Leave me alone! I sold 6 million records. People say I’m a pop artist now. I don’t care if you say that I’m not real folk. I’ve partaken in my culture.”

And he just wants to get people up on the dance floor.

“My main aim is to maintain this energy that I put into the music so that people can feel it.”
