Like most weeks, the public voted wrong on Canadian Idol. Billy Klippert was voted off the show, allowing Gary Beals and Ryan Malcolm to compete next week for the Idol crown.

It appeared Beals was the obvious choice to get voted off, after he lacked emotion and power while performing Stevie Wonder’s “Overjoyed” and Skylark’s “Wildflower” on Monday night’s performance show. With that said, Beals appeared to be the one that would get voted off for a few weeks.

By no means was Klippert perfect, but he was certainly better than Beals. Klippert performed “Everytime You Go Away” and Stone Temple Pilots’ “Plush,” and it lacked the intensity that he has been known to bring.

Now Malcolm, who sang “He Ain’t Heavy?He’s My Brother” and Billy Joel’s “Moving Up,” appears to be the “obvious choice,” but with several weeks of surprising and disappointing voting results, even Ben Mulroney might beat Malcolm.

The voters have made mistakes almost every week:

-In the first week of the final 11, Candida Clauseri was among those sent home, but her earlier-round performance of “I Will Always Love You” should have carried her at least another week.

-The next week, Mikey Bustos was the surprising choice, as he was one of the few competitors to bring the excitement to his performances that made it fun to watch.

-Toya Alexis getting voted out when there were six remaining was the ultimate shocker, as she could and probably should have easily won the whole contest.

-Audrey de Montigney’s dismissal last week should have happened this week, while Beals should have received his pink slip weeks ago. Ultimately, that flip-flop wouldn’t have mattered.

But when you let the public vote, and when you give them unlimited votes as Canadian Idol has done, you never know what could happen.

You can only hope that the voters smarten up next Monday night and choose Ryan Malcolm as the first Canadian Idol winner.
