The Pope And His Thoughts On New Moon

It’s no great surprise that the Pope isn’t a major endorser of the Twlight series.

Conveniently timed to the release of the “New Moon” sequel to Twilight, the Vatican culture council leader, Monsignor Franco Perazzolo, issued a statement about the underlying evil in the series. According to E! online, he said “this film is nothing more than a moral vacuum with a deviant message and as such should be of concern”

His next comment further solidifies his position on the vampire and werewolf packed flick. “This theme of vampires in Twilight combines a mixture of excesses that, as ever, is aimed at young people and gives a heavy esoteric element.”

To clarify, esoteric simply means that the film is intended for only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge. In this case, this “small” number of people is a worldwide fan base of Twilighters, eager to indulge in their two hours of sparkly vampires, vicious werewolf clans and clumsy humans. This statement issued by the pope is reminiscent of the hate towards the Harry Potter series inspired by the Roman Catholic religion years earlier, which didn’t seem to affect sales and revenue.

New Moon Posts Great Opening Numbers

Looks like the vampire-craze is here to stay.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon was released today (November 20), much to the enjoyment of avid Twilighters everywhere. According to ew.com, the flick set a new record for opening midnight shows, and it grossed around $26.3 million. Move aside, Harry Potter (who earned $2.2 million in the summer).

The story follows Edward and Bella, as well as incorporating the new wolf-gang that up-and-comer Taylor Lautner is a big part of. For those who have read the book, and followed the series, they already know about the consequences of a love triangle with a vampire and a werewolf. If not, Kristen Stewart’s (who plays Bella) anguish will be made clear through the Chris Weitz’s-directed film.

Other big names in New Moon are Robert Pattinson, Dakota Fanning and Ashley Greene. They each play blood-sucking vampires in the movie with special talents of their own. Along with these talents, it looks as though their star power is powerful as well, as the movie continues to draw in excited viewers worldwide.

We were lucky to sit down with Canadian heartthrob Bronson Pelletier for an interview during the recent press stop in Toronto. Bronson plays Jared in the movie and apparently had to get jacked up to play his werewolf character. He also spoke with us about his relationships with his fellow Twilight actors.

It’s official! According to the superficial.com, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have had some sort of romance. The news comes from the original Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke. In a recent interview with Time Magazine she spilled the beans stating, “I didn’t have a camera in the hotel room. I cannot say, but in terms of what Kristen told me directly, it didn’t happen on the first movie.” I think we can all read between the lines as to what “it” means. However, I can’t really say I’m shocked. Seriously? Is this news? Two really good looking people can only be stuck together for so long and eventually they’re going to find their way into bed together.

Although, there was a considerable age difference between the two on the first movie. At four years apart, Twilight’s boy wonder was dangerously close to earning the nickname Robert Polansky. The director even cautioned the young superstar, “After I cast him, I told Rob, Don’t even think about having a romance with her,” Hardwicke says. “She’s under 18. You will be arrested.” Well, I guess Edward really would do anything for Bella. Even if it means spending some time in the slammer, once again Twilight is showing us all that love has no boundaries.

SNL Wants Robert Pattinson

On the red carpet for the 61st Annual Emmy Awards, E! News kicked off a campaign to get Twilight’s Robert Pattinson a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live.

“We would love to get Robert Pattinson,” said Seth Meyers. “How dare you tell me he’s the hot guy from Twilight, like I don’t already know! We’re actually hoping if he’s not available, at least his hair will come by and host.”

“Oh yeah, he’d be great,” said Kristen Wiig.

Andy Samburg simply gave a thumbs-up and nodded when asked if he thought Pattison would do a good job hosting.

Season 35 of the sketch comedy show premieres on September 26. Megan Fox will have the honour of hosting while U2 performs as the musical guest.

Vancouver Gets Eclipsed By Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart

The now-infamous cast of Eclipse, the Twilight sequel have been spotted throughout Vancouver where the third installment of the series is currently filming. It will be a prime time for some snooping too, as rumours have been flying about romances between a number of duos on the set.

Lead actors Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson arrived just days ago, Stewart still clad with a mullet from her title role in the Joan Jett biopic Runaways. They were sited a few nights ago getting cozy at a Kings of Leon concert in Vancouver Aug. 15, with photos of them practically making out appearing on RadarOnline.com and Just Jared. This comes after the two attended Comic-Con, an international and now celebrity hot spot comic book convention in San Diego, where they were practically joined at the hip according to the Los Angeles Times.

Also on site in Vancouver are Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen) and Xavier Howard (Riley) who have been spotted together throughout the city, although like Stewart and Pattinson, no romance has been confirmed. Bryce Dallas Howard (Victoria) invited her husband Seth Gabel and son Theodore along for the trip to the Great White North and Dakota Fanning just left after filming her scenes as the character Jane.

Eclipse has already been scheduled to hit theatres on June 30, 2010, just eight months after the release of New Moon this November, with director David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy) in charge.

Twilight Cast Turns Into Chocolate

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner get their own chocolate bar in the shape of their “Twilight” characters Edward Cullen, Bella Swan and Jacob Black respectively.

Necco sub-brand SkyBar is releasing these “New Moon” bars as well as special boxes of “Twilight” Sweethearts. But of course, they had to add a vampire twist to the flavours which include “Secret Strawberry,” “Passion Fruit” and “Tempting Apple.”

The chocolates are 79-cents each and can be purchased at Blockbuster stores, while the hearts — which come in theatre sized boxes — can be purchased for $2.99.

All three “Twilight” stars are set to make an appearance at this year’s Comic-Con along with “New Moon” director Chris Weitz. There have been rumours of exclusive “New Moon” footage being unveiled at the comic book festival.

Chase Crawford Is People’s Hottest Bachelor

Jason Mesnick and Jillian Harris — reality stars of ABC’s “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” — may have to move aside because “Gossip Girl’s” Chase Crawford is “the hottest bachelor” according to People magazine.

After all, the 23-year-old actor has had quite a busy year. Crawford starred in one of the most buzzed-about TV shows, garnered a role that allows him to share the screen with Kiefer Sutherland and has recently been cast as the lead in the highly anticipated “footloose” remake.

But don’t be fooled by his success, Crawford’s ideal date involves a simple beer and pool table. “All you need is a pool table, beer, an electric jukebox and good conversation,” he told People magazine. “The day a girl beats me in a game of Beirut [a kind of beer pong] is a good sign!”

“Star Trek’s” Chris Pine and “Transformers” star Shia Labeouf have also made the cut. This year’s list also includes “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert and “90210’s” Ryan Eggold. From “Twilight,” both Robert Pattinson and Kellan Lutz are listed among the 45 bachelors.

Robert Pattinson To Star In New Movie ‘Bel Ami’

“Twilight’s” Robert Pattinson has been cast in a new movie, an adaptation of Guy de Maupassant’s short story “Bel Ami,” as reported by Variety.

The actor revealed the news while in Cannes to promote his next flick “Remember Me.” He also told Variety, to the excitement of female fans, that the female lead hasn’t been cast yet for “Remember Me.” “The girl needs to be literally inspirational,” he says. “I have no qualms saying that she’s a genius.”

“Bel Ami” is scheduled to shoot next year in Paris and will be directed by British theatre director Declan Donnellan. Pattinson also managed to draw some similarities between his character in “Remember Me” and the vampire that made him a star. “They’re both about commitment,” he told Variety, adding that fans will get to see more of Edward through Bella’s “hallucinations” in “New Moon.”

Pattinson is also set to star alongside Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz in the period drama “Unbound Captives,” which tells the story of an American woman (Rachel Weisz) and her murdered husband killed by a Comanche war party. Pattinson will play her son.

Movie Review: Little Ashes

“Twilight” fans beware: this is not your typical R-Pattz. He’s crazy, he’s odd and I like it.

“Little Ashes” takes place in 1920’s Spain (pre-Spanish Civil War) and focuses on the real-life friendship of eccentric artist Salvador Dalí (played by Robert Pattinson), famed poet and revolutionary Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltrán), and renowned Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel (Matthew McNulty). But most importantly, “Little Ashes” tells the untold love story of Dalí and García Lorca.

Most of the movie takes place at the university attended by the three Spanish artists. One of the very first scenes shows Pattinson as Dalí arriving at school dressed in God knows what and a bob cut, which I’m sure will shock many of you because it defiantly shocked the characters in the movie.

Then again, Madrid was at a turning point in the 1920’s as was most of the world. It’s no wonder why that decade was nicknamed the “roaring twenties.” Jazz was a new thing, Freud was sharing his controversial ideas and experimental art was beginning to explode. In a way, Dalí, García Lorca and Buñuel represent these changes in “Little Ashes,” just like they did in real life.

But the main focus of this movie is the relationship of García Lorca and Dalí. Anyone who has seen the trailers for this film knows Dalí and García Lorca have a fling. And in case you were wondering, there’s plenty of kissing scenes featuring Pattinson and Beltrán. However, that’s not all the movie is about. It’s about change, it’s about freedom, it’s about being unique and it’s very relevant today.

Yes this is a biopic, but it’s not a time-piece your grandmother would necessarily watch. All of the main actors are under thirty and all of them do an amazing job at making history accessible to a new generation (they get drunk and rebel).

Pattinson will blow you away with his portrayal of Dalí. First of all, the guy deserves a huge pat on the back for taking on one of the most complex roles. Dalí was known to be both a shy person and an attention-seeking exhibitionist. To blend this odd combination of character traits and pull it off is really hard and he does it. On top of that, he’s a British actor playing a Spanish icon and although his Spanish accent isn’t the best, it’s still impressive. Either way, his weird facial expressions make up for it.

Matthew McNulty (also a British actor) pulls off the Spanish accent as well, but it’s a good thing that the film’s other two stars, Beltrán (who makes his feature film debut in “Little Ashes”) and Marina Gatell are Spanish natives, which makes the movie authentic.

Beltrán and Pattinson definitely have chemistry together. I didn’t want to compare “Little Ashes” to “Twilight,” since the movies are completely different but the one thing they share is this idea of forbidden love. In “Twilight” one is scared the other might bite their head off for being a vampire and in “Little Ashes” they’re scared they’ll have their heads bitten off for loving each other.

You can tell this wasn’t a big budget movie, but you can also tell a lot of thought and effort went into it. Director Paul Morrison does a great job of capturing Spain through the eyes of a Spanish person as opposed to a tourist. This isn’t the type of movie that shows something for no reason, every scene made the cut for a reason, and so did every actor. “Little Ashes” is the kind of movie that also depends a lot on the actors and their performance. Another cast could have completely changed the outcome of the movie.

But the cool thing about this film is that it’s so focused and yet you can get a lot out of it. Whether you’re going into it to see Pattinson make out with another guy, or because you’re a fan of Dalí’s work or because you like Spain, you’ll definitely be satisfied.
