Ricky Gervais Promises Golden Globes Will Be Worth Watching

British comedian and notorious Golden Globes host, Ricky Gervais has promised that when he returns to host this year, his jokes will not be toned down.

For what will be his third time hosting – he guarantees that the new material will not be censored or dull in an interview on NBC’s Today Show.

“What do I care if someone likes what I do or not? I just don’t anymore. If you get your own way, if you get final edit and enjoy what you’re doing and things turn out exactly as wanted them – what else is there?” When asked about criticism over those jokes about Charlie Sheen and Robert Downey Jr’s drug use, he replied: “I don’t know what I did wrong really, what did I say that was untrue? The controversy is irrelevant to me. That is people’s opinions outside my jokes.”

“I’ve never really succumbed to peer pressure. And this feeds into my humour. I deal in taboo subjects for that reason. Not only am I fascinated with them, but I like to take the audience to places that it hasn’t been before.”

Gervais continued: “The guy on stage is a lot brasher, more arrogant, more confident than me. I take a deep breath and go out with swagger … I might even really be drunk.”

On that note, Gervais declared that this will be his last year hosting. Be sure to tune in to the 69th Golden Globes live on January 15th. In the meantime, let’s look back at his previous gigs…

‘Iron Man 2′ Does Well at Box Office – Doesn’t Beat ‘Dark Knight’

“Iron Man 2″ did pretty well at the box office this weekend – but it still didn’t knock down “Dark Knight” and “Spider-Man 3.”

E! Online reports that the final tally for the weekend box office should be $133.6 Million for Friday-Sunday. That means it’s the fifth biggest opening in history, and the third biggest superhero opening in history.

It was a strong opening, but not necessarily meeting expectations. Exhibitor Relations was calling for a ”Dark Knight”-besting $160 million opening weekend. (“In all honesty, I’m thinking more like $150 mil,” analyst Chad Hartigan said in an email last week, “but if you’re gonna go there you might as well go all the way!”) The Los Angeles Times reported the film was due for a debut of at least $140 million.

‘Iron Man 2′ Premiere Cancelled Due to Volcanic Ash

The world premiere of the highly anticipated Iron Man 2, which was supposed to take place in the UK, has been cancelled and moved to Los Angeles due to the ongoing air travel issues, reports NME.com.

Big-named actors from the action sequel such as Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L Jackson were all due to fly to London for the event, which was supposed to be held yesterday (Monday, April 19).

Unfortunately, because of the restricted air travel due to ash clouds from the eruption of Iceland’s volcano Eyjafjallajökull, that was no longer possible.

“Due to the continuing air travel uncertainty, Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment have taken the decision to move the Iron Man 2 world premiere and junket to Los Angeles,” said Paramount in a statement.

Miley Cyrus’ film The Last Song, also due to have a London premiere, also faced problems due to the volcanic ash.

Rant ‘N Rave: Male Actors over 40

There’s something about certain male actors over the age of 40 (but have yet to hit the 50 mark) that makes ladies and men of all ages goo-goo-gaa-gaa for them.

You know who these men are. They are the actors that straight men will shamelessly admit that even they would fantasize about these stars.

These men are charming, attractive and, most importantly, talented.

So whether you are fifteen years their junior or ten years their senior, here are five (although there are many more) contemporary actors who still capture our hearts and make us blush like little schoolgirls.

5) Brad Pitt:

As you may know, I am not Pitt’s biggest fan when it comes to his personal life. But I will admire the man for his movies. From his diverse on-screen characters such as the irresistible Tristan in ‘Legends of the Fall’ to the gluttonous Rusty in the Ocean’s movie franchise, Pitt is more than just a pretty face.

But while many consider Pitt as overrated in the looks department, the same cannot be said about his acting chops. As you may have noticed, Pitt is given the same amount of appreciation for his performances in films as negative credit for his part in the entire Aniston-Jolie “feud.”

In other words, in either position, his role is underrated.

4) Patrick Dempsey:

Also known as McDreamy—a name that pretty much summarizes this actor. From his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ to his performance as the sweetheart/good-guy in both ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ and ‘Enchanted,’ this 43-year-old actor appears to resemble his wholesome figure in real life. Even though Dempsey is married (for almost ten years) with three children, he makes single women wish he unattached and married women wish he was their husband.

While it’s likely that Dempsey is not as sweet in real life as he seems on-screen, the fact that the actor was not afraid to reveal his Dyslexia a few years ago makes him more alluring. Or perhaps Dempsey just played smart and knew he would win over more women for his brutal openness.

Heck, either way, I love him more for his honesty.

3) George Clooney:

It would be impossible to write this blog without mentioning Clooney. While his more recent roles are somewhat imitations of one another (quirky, oddball yet charming), he’s still too irresistible to avoid.

When he isn’t nominated or winning an award for movies like ‘Syriana’, ‘Good Night and Good Luck’ and ‘Michael Clayton,’ he’s involved in charity—most notably trying to help the people of Darfur. He’s an artist and a philanthropist.

Just perfect.

2) Johnny Depp:

Known for his choice of roles that border eccentric and downright freaky (Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd), Depp surely knows how to capture movie audiences and critics. Even with poor movie choices like ‘Secret Window,’ Depp still managed to receive praise for his role. He’s captivating and mysterious—the atypical Hollywood actor. It’s easy to admit that, without Depp, the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie saga would neither be as successful or as entertaining.

1) Robert Downey Jr.:

After battling a lengthy addiction to drugs, some might say that it’s amazing that Robert Downey Jr. is as successful as he is today.

Even when he was critically acclaimed for his roles in ‘Less Than Zero’ and ‘Chaplin’ (in which he received an Academy Award nom for his performance) Downey Jr. still never starred in any true “Blockbuster hit”—until 2008. Both ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Tropic Thunder’ put Downey Jr. back on the acting radar.

While his peers admire him and critics rave about him, fans adore Downey Jr. for his rawness and vulnerability. Even as a brilliant actor, back in the day, he was damaged due to his drug use (a quality that now somehow makes celebrities even more famous. Kate Moss anyone?).

In the past couple of years, those who refused to hire Downey Jr. due to his troubled past (which included arrests and rehab stints) are now likely kicking themselves where the sun don’t shine.

Kick away my friends.

In his most recent role in the film ‘The Soloist,’ Downey Jr. shows why he’s here to stay. Undoubtedly, Downey Jr. is the movie’s heart and soul—proving that, damaged or not, he still has what it takes to shine.

Robert Downey Jr. To Play Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey Jr. will ditch his high-tech suit for 19th century threads in his newest role: Sherlock Holmes.

Fresh off the success of “Iron Man,” the actor has reportedly signed on to star in Guy Ritchie’s big-screen adaptation of the Arthur Conan Doyle-created super-sleuth.

More specifically, Ritchie’s mystery drama for Warner Bros. will be based on an upcoming comic book about Holmes by Lionel Wigram, one of the film’s producers.

Taking place in late 19th-century London, the movie will portray the detective as more adventurous than previous film incarnations, with a focus on his boxing and swordsmanship skills.

Variety reports that Downey committed to the role after Ritchie showed him the latest version of the script written by Anthony Peckham (“Don’t Say A Word”).

No other cast members have yet been announced.

Ritchie’s film will begin shooting in October, ahead of Columbia Picture’s own “Sherlock Holmes” movie. That one is set to be a comedy, starring Sacha Baron Cohen as Holmes and Will Ferrell as his sidekick, Dr. Watson.

Downey, whose credits include “Gothika” and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” will next hit the big screen in the comedy “Tropic Thunder” and the drama “The Soloist.” He is also set to reprise his role as Tony Stark in the “Iron Man” sequel.

“Grindhouse” may have bombed at the box office, but it has had a lasting impression.

According to SlashFilm.com, the new Ben Stiller movie, “Tropic Thunder” will feature fake trailers. The idea is taken from the Tarantino-Rodriguez collaboration.

According to the site’s source, one of the trailers is for a faux film called “Satan’s Alley” and featured Robert Downey, Jr. (who stars in “Tropic Thunder”) and Tobey Maguire.

The fake “Grindhouse” trailers were so popular that one of them, “Machete,” is actually being made into a full-length film.

Robert Downey Jr. Named ‘Iron Man’

Robert Downey Jr., currently on the upswing with his career, has landed the starring role in the latest Marvel Comics film.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Downey will portray the title character in the upcoming big-screen adaptation of “Iron Man.”

It will be the first time Marvel Comics has produced a feature film independently, with shooting set to begin in February. The flick is currently penciled in for a May 2008 release date.

“(Downey’s) versatility sets him apart and makes him an ideal fit to play such a complex character as Iron Man,” said Marvel Studios’ president of production, Kevin Feige.

The story of “Iron Man” centres on the character of Tony Stark, a rich inventor. When he’s kidnapped and forced to create a powerful weapon, Stark instead builds an armored suit and escapes from his captors, vowing to protect the world.
