Gatsby is always a great style inspiration, so is Leo DiCaprio.
Prom season is coming up and most likely there are some guys out there who still haven’t even given a thought to what they will be wearing that night. No worries. It’s usually thought that guy’s have it easier than girls when deciding what to wear for prom, which is partly true. But don’t discount the importance of a guy’s sartorial choice for prom night. Some guy’s might feel boxed in when picking a prom look when they feel the need to match their prom date’s outfit, or they might get roped into wearing their dad’s/brother’s/some distant relative’s hand-me-downs because it’s cheap and easy. But don’t fret as there are a variety of men’s looks to choose from.
The famously glitzy Cannes Film Festival in France, which is currently taking place, is a good place to start when deciding on prom looks.
Leonardo DiCaprio & Tobey Maguire
You can’t go wrong with the traditional simple black tuxedo. When in doubt get a tux. The classic look stands alone and will pair nicely with whatever your prom date is wearing. When choosing the traditional black tuxedo little touches can go a long way as seen in Leo’s look, he’s wearing a three-piece suit with black satin lining which helps set himself apart from The Great Gatsby co-star Tobey. Another important thing to remember is fit! Maguire’s tux is tailored fit to his body, the fit is perfection. So if you think of busting out your dad’s ol’ tux make sure you get it tailored, otherwise you’ll look like a kid trying to play dress up.

While a Pokemon master’s objective is to “Catch em’ All!” , this particular young man only has eyes for one individual.
Dressing up like Ash Ketchum, he gathers a crowd in the school cafeteria and asks his crush if she wants to go to prom with him.
And since it’s not everyday a Pokemon master puts his day job on hold to ask a girl out, she obviously says YES!
Prom dress shopping is easily one of the most stressful, aggravating things any girl will have to do in their lifetime (asides from wedding planning. Apparently, choosing cake is a nightmare—sounds delicious to me). From having to try on what feel like millions of dresses to the battling over prices with your parents, not to mention the constant disappointment of when yet another dress doesn’t fit you properly, is enough to drive someone mad.
It really doesn’t help when the other half of the graduating class are buying custom dresses or dresses right off the runway—yes, that happens. Prom dress shopping is the WORST.
There’s only so many times you can scan the same store, and there is no shaking that feeling that “this isn’t THE dress.” Whoever created the idea of “THE dress” has some serious issues, because there is no way any dress will meet up to a 17-year-olds expectations. How are you supposed to know when you find “the dress?” Is it when the sales associate says, “You need to leave with that dress. It’s the dress. Take it. Take it now. For free!”? Because that does not happen.
Then there are the parents. Moms get too critical when it comes to fit and style, and dads clam up when it comes to spending some money (but it didn’t happen that time they bought a new flat screen, now did it?). C’est la vie, I suppose.
Here are the ten major reasons why prom dress shopping is just the worst
1) Most dresses come in obnoxious neon colours

[Ed. note: I know neon is trendy now but not THIS much neon. This is the bane of my existence--asides from Uggs.]
2) Dresses that don’t come in your size

3) What if someone else has the same dress?

4) Everything is bejewelled

5) Finding dresses that fit your boobs is ALWAYS impossible Read more…
Well here’s a random piece of information.
Did you know that Danielle Fischel (aka Topanga Lawrence) took former ‘N Sync-er Lance Bass to prom?
Well, she did. And the photo evidence here is ’90s gold!
It was back in the year of 1999 when Fischel was a senior in high school and was dating Bass. But because he was in one of the biggest boy bands at the time, he had to decline her first request to prom because he was on tour.
But then a week later, Fischel says Bass sent her “three dozen roses in the mail with a card that said, ‘Plans have changed, I’ll be in town. Can I take you to prom? Check yes or no.’ And there were two little boxes!”
Obviously taking the opportunity, Fischel checked ‘Yes’ and the two spent the night dancing away. I imagine that it felt just like a fairy tale.
The “Boy Meets World” actress posted the adorable prom photo on Twitter with the caption, “Pics or it didn’t happen,” to which Bass responded, “Wow! He sounds so romantic!! Xoxo.”
CUTE!!!
Now of course, we’re familiar that Bass said he was gay in 2006, but he still wins PROM KING IN MY EYES!!
Prom is a time that most kids either look back on with fondness or despair (when you play the game of prom, you either win or you die!). Some people look great and find the perfect person/people to share it with and others…don’t. Some even elect not to go at all. If you do plan on going, here are 8 songs for the perfect promposal that will help woo your guy/girl/hobo off the street into going with you, and hopefully, bring you one step closer to the night of your dreams and/or nightmares.
1) Let’s Go – Matt and Kim
Not everyone wants to go to prom. Some kids legitimately don’t feel like going, while others think they’re being cool non-conformists by staying at home, all while their friends are having the time of their lives. Basically, those who opt to stay home are the people who’ll regret their decisions later. Convince your girl or guy to go with you by playing this upbeat tune that chants “let’s go” over and over again. Eventually you’ll get them with the not-so-subliminal messaging alone.
2) Marry You –Bruno Mars
Prom is an excellent time for people who are in a relationship. In fact, in my final year of high school, prom was the primary motivation for even acquiring a boo. Even though your partner is a tailor-made prom date, you should still put in the effort when asking officially them to be your prom date. For the sake of cuteness, use this frankly adorable Bruno Mars song (note: just DON’T get married. Other than that, the rest of the song is pretty cute).
3) One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks) – One Direction
Maybe you have the perfect person in mind to take to prom; they’re cute, funny, nice, and you want to put your face on their face. But— plot twist—they have no idea that you exist. Use this song to tell them that you WILL get them to go to prom with you, one way or another.
Note: author not responsible for anyone being creeped out and/or terrified by this prom-posal tactic.
4) Umbrella ft. Jay-Z feat. Rihanna

There are a couple of places I would never expect supermodel and Sports Illustrated cover girl Kate Upton to ever be seen at, one being a lame school dance. But yet, that’s where she might actually be after she more or less said yes to high school senior Jake Davidson who asked the supermodel out via YouTube.
In his video promposal, he muses that Kate (or Katie) is the “ying to his yang” because he’s 5’9 on a good day, she’s 5’10 (probably without heels), and he reads Sports Illustrated while she’s on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Just a few days after he uploaded the video (on a friend’s account), she responded via Twitter, saying:
“@jakedavidson23:youtube.com/watch?v=NvxqUE…” you can call me Katie if you want! How could I turn down that video! I’ll check my schedule

Which more or less sounds like a “yes” to me if, of course, her schedule allows it.
Lucky guy. He’ll pretty much have the best looking date in the room.

I may or may not be counting the days until the third season of Game of Thrones premieres (20 more days) and I may or may not have started to re-watch all the episodes with the books at hand. So yeah, I’m totally going to be excited for anything GoT related, like this new YouTube series that puts Westeros back into high school.
So far, everything seems so spot on:
- Starks as hipsters
- Baratheons as total assholes
- Greyjoys as the speedo-clad swim team
- and Daenerys Targaryen as the new girl
The power politics also play out every well in the new high school setting as the houses (or cliques) vie for prom king and queen (“Prom is coming…). Sounds like a hilarious parody to me!
Don’t forget to keep an eye out for A Very Potter Musical‘s Joey Richter (a.k.a. the other Ron Weasley) as speedo-wearing Greyjoy! Yes. Weasley is our king!
Guys are simple creatures and if you know how to read them it’s very simple to tell when they have a crush on a girl. In this episode of Staff Members Talking Shit, Brittany, Kelly, Jordan, Casey and Dan give you all the information you need to know on men. If you’re wondering whether or not that guy in your math lecture is ever going to ask you out, hopefully this helps. Or it might make things worse. Either way, we tried.

Justin Bieber never got to go to a high school prom in the traditional sense, though he’s had TONS of invitations from fans. Unfortunately, he’s never accepted the offers (living the pop star life and all) but on Saturday, a high schooler from New Jersey named Leon Purvis brought a cardboard cutout of JB to his sophomore prom.
Last year, the male Belieber created a YouTube video addressed to the star: ”Since it’s a very big deal, I’m going to ask this: Justin Bieber would you like to come to my prom with me, not as my date but as a friend, as a brother?”
Though the video received more than 147,000 page views, he never heard back. Not to worry, Purvis opted for a $42 cutout of the pop sensation for the prom, which was this weekend. He even graced Cardboard Bieber with some of his dance moves.
Luckily for Purvis, he got two free tickets to Bieber’s Believe Tour from Scooter Braun.

While menswear trends rarely change, it’s surprising how difficult dressing up can be. The wrong cut or fit will make a look sloppy. Luckily, it’s all about the basics for men. Here are a few tips and tricks to make sure you’re looking just as sharp as your date.
Buy a suit
If the dress code allows it, ditch the tux and opt for a suit. While the tux is the go-to for formal occasions, a suit’s versatility will make the investment worthwhile. By buying a suit in a neutral colour (such as black, gray or a deep navy), you can wear it to multiple occasions, such as your cousin’s wedding, your first big job interview, etc.
Make sure your suit fits
There’s nothing worse than seeing a young man in a ill-fitting suit. A suit is all about proportions, and when it fits, it should make you look taller and leaner, not like you’re swimming in fabric. A great suit jacket should fit close to the body when buttoned up. If you feel like moving will cause the seams to split, then it’s too tight. If you feel like you can play basketball in it, it’s too big.
Also, keep the shoulders in check. A suit jacket’s shoulder pads should hit your shoulders, not beyond. Make sure the jacket’s length works for you. The sleeves end where your wrist meets the base of your thumb and the bottom of your jacket meets your knuckles. Look at red carpet photos of celebrities that have builds similar to yours. Study them and see how the widths of their lapels and ties work with their size. Last, go for slim pants (not skinny) that are hemmed to prevent fabric pooling around your shoes.
Avoid square-toed shoes
Don’t ruin all the hard work you put in finding a suit that fits with square-toed shoes. These shoes ruin the lean, slender silhouette a great suit creates. Opt for a shoe that tapers off more gently at the toe.
FOR THE MORE ADVENTUROUS…
Shawl collar

If you feel you can afford to make this investment, try a shawl collar tuxedo or dinner jacket. The look is classy and will keep you from looking like everyone else.

Bow ties

If you’re a Doctor Who fan, then you know bow ties are cool. Keep it classic with the black bow tie, or try out some patterned ones. Don’t buy a clip on. Man up and find a YouTube tutorial and learn how to tie one.

I remember my prom, the big expensive dress I made my parents buy but only wore once, the stretch limo and our dates struggling to fit our dresses inside. That memory still makes me laugh.
But after the clock hit midnight, the dress, the shoes and the corsage were stored in the back of my closest. Other than pictures, the only reminder I have now is when the songs I heard at prom come back on the radio.
Okay… so cheesy introduction… I know. But it needs to be said, it’s prom right?
If you’re wondering what should be on your prom playlist this year, here are some suggestions. Of course we have the classics, like Vitamin C, mixed with some newer hits like Calvin Harris.
Vitamin C — Graduation
As sappy as this song is, no prom would be complete without it playing at the end of the night. The memory of this song playing at prom will stay with you for life. So do me a favor. When this song plays at your prom, grab your bestie and relive your high school memories together.
Jay Z and Kanye – Young Forever
I originally considering including Alphaville’s “Forever Young” but then thought, hey why not give it a new spin with “Young Forever?” Even if you didn’t love high school, prom is one of those landmarks that indicate you’re growing up.

Don’t have a prom date? No worries. Create your very own promposal for Justin Bieber and upload it to YouTube. If that doesn’t get his attention, you can always bring a cardboard cutout of your fave celeb instead. We talk about this, One Direction confessions (does Harry Styles have no nipples?) and a cute kid who is terrified of a robot dinosaur.

Justin Bieber is a pretty busy guy these days, what with his girlfriend Selena Gomez, his whole singing career and ruling over the evolving species called Bieberites. I’m sure he’d love be your Boyfriend and take to you prom, but the sad truth is, he just doesn’t have time.
After sending multiple requests to JB’s record label for him to go to prom, Colorado teen Kristen Schubert decided to get crafty. She created a cutout version of the popstar to take carry to prom with her and apparently he was a mega attention hog. All the girls wanted to dance and take pictures with him.
Of course, Schubert wasn’t the only one to ask JB to prom but surprisingly, she also wasn’t she only one to take a celebrity cutout with her. An Iowa teen named Rachel Bird went with a replica of NFL star Tim Tebow.
While I love that these girls are creative, I wonder if expectations are way too high these days. If there really are no eligible human suitors to take to prom and for some reason you don’t want to go alone that’s one thing, but do guys really have to be as talented as JB and dashing as Tim Tebow to be worthy?

Things look chipper when Brent asks Holly to prom but the upbeat music and slapstick jokes go on too long. You know something bad is going to happen. Our villain is Lola “Princess” who desperately wants to go to prom with her high school crush Brent. She even buys a Molly Ringwald-style pink dress for the occasion.
But she’s devastated when Brent asks Holly instead so she and her dad kidnap him and create a creepy makeshift prom in her basement, complete with torture devices. Lola promises to avenge the heartbreak she feels by stabbing Holly in the heart.
It’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Sixteen candles. If you’re a not a fan of horror movies, this is a movie you might want to skip before prom.
Though the movie came out three years ago at TIFF, it’s being released in the U.S. on July 1.
Watch the trailer here:

When I graduated from high school, promposals were not like the movies. We didn’t expect our dates to be some Ryan Gosling doppelganger who surprised you at your locker with a dozen roses and a note attached asking you to prom. Instead, a typical ‘promposal’ happened via text or Facebook (gotta love modern technology right?) and usually didn’t involve showmanship.
This year, old fashioned promposals are huge. Luckily for us, the results are often uploaded to YouTube, though we admit this puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on guys and girls to come up with something original. Sometimes simple is better people!
Still, if you want to make a lasting impression on your special someone, here are some promposals that will guarantee you a date.
1) For the film buff
This proposal is by far my fave! The guy made a video of himself putting together his promposal for his crush to watch. At the end of the docu-style promposal, he walks to the house and then the video cuts out. Meanwhile, the guy was waiting outside the whole time with a sign that said “Prom?” Talk about surprises! If only my promposal was like this then maybe I would have said yes. But that’s another story.
2) For the intellectual
This guy would have taken the cake for best promposal of life, if it weren’t for the teeniest fact that he asked his teacher! Yep, you heard me right… his teacher! If this was a serious promposal I would have died of jealousy. Not only did this guy recite a sappy monologue but he also put on a whole show! He prepared an introduction video, revealed posters during certain parts of his monologue to outline his points, and best of all he got down on one knee with flowers to ask his favorite girl teacher out! Do you see why I would have been insanely jealous?!

Allstar Weekend is easily one of the most down to earth bands I’ve ever interviewed. And that’s a lot coming from me.
I met the band at The Sutton Place Hotel, which, if you know the selection of luxury hotels in Toronto, is a modest choice. Not too fancy. Pretty low key.
The band just finished a show last night at the Sound Academy, one of the last legs of their Canadian tour before heading up to London, ON. I ask how it went.
“It was really awesome seeing how many kids came out,” says Zachary, the lead singer and guitarist. “Toronto just seems like a cool city for bands, all the kids are really into it which is really exciting for us. We can’t wait to come back.”
“Fans here know our lyrics more than in America, it’s crazy. They know all the words,” says Cameron, the bassist.
Leave it to us crazy Canadians to leave an impression on them. The band also paid a visit to the MuchMusic studios a day earlier, which was of course, met with a sold out audience.
So between sold out television appearances and a passionate, driven fan base, how does the band prepare themselves for their shows?
“I like to light a bunch of candles, sit in a dark room. I’ll put on the Spice Girls,” says Nathan, the guitarist.
