Punk band Blink-182′s drummer Travis Barker has settled a lawsuit that he filed over the plane crash in 2008 that left him with third-degree burns and killed four other people, reports CHARTattack.com.
Barker was a passenger on a chartered Learjet plane on Sept. 19, 2008 when it crashed and burst into flames after overshooting a runway in Columbia, Southern California. The crash left Barker and DJ AM with third-degree burns, and killed the four other people aboard the plane.
Barker sued three major companies in November, 2008. First, Bombardier Inc., which manufactured the Learjet plane that crashed. Second, the charter company Global Exec Aviation. Third, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, which made the plane’s tires. As well, he sued the companies that brokered the chartered flight.
Before surviving a near-fatal plane crash last year, DJ AM was a successfully recovering addict, but his family is amending a negligence suit against companies involved in the crash to include an allegation of wrongful death, reports E! News.
“The crash ultimately caused DJ AM’s death,” the suit reads. They allege the crash forced him to begin taking pills to cope with anxiety and pain, which lead to his accidental overdose in August.
The death of DJ AM, a.k.a. Adam Goldstein, is going to the courts in a bizarre twist of events that links it with the plane crash DJ AM survived in Sept. 2008, according to TMZ.
The estate of Adam Goldstein is filing a ‘wrongful death’ suit against Clay Lacy Aviation, the airline responsible for the jet that crashed with both DJ AM and Travis Barker (of Blink 182) on board. The claim is that Goldstein was terrified of flying, and used drugs to calm his nerves.
The suit in the L.A. County Superior Court notes Goldstein was prescribed a number of drugs to cope with the burns he suffered as well as the distress following the crash. The travel service, Goodyear Tire, Learjet and the estates of the two pilots who were killed in the crash are also being sued by Goldstein’s estate.
Goldstein’s death in August was caused by a lethal cocktail of prescription drugs as well as cocaine.
DJ AM is seeking $20 million in damages following a fiery plane crash last September that seriously injured him and Travis Barker and killed four others.
The celebrity disc jockey (real name Adam Goldstein) filed suit Friday against the plane’s manufacturer, Learjet, and several other companies.
AM is seeking $10 million for medical expenses, lost earnings, profits and economic damages, while the other $10 million is related to non-economic losses including mental and physical pain.
Following Friday’s jet crash, which killed four people and put Travis Barker and AM in the hospital with critical injuries, musical friends of the artists began to arrive at MTV News.
Fall Out Boy, Beanie Sigel, Lindsay Lohan, Samantha Ronson and Cobra Starship’s Cabe Saporta gave their deepest sympathies to the two musicians in the hospital.
“Our band would like to reach out and put those who were a part of this tragedy and their families in our prayers, and as well our continued support for the recovery of those who survived, said in a statement by Fall Out Boy, who toured with Barker’s +44 in 2007. “It’s times like these that we are reminded, in the worst possible way, to honor life.
Rapper Beanie Siegel, who recently partook in a few songs with Barker, told MTV News, that he heard about the crash from his manager. “I was just with Travis and the whole squad in Vegas,” he said. “It’s just a blessing he survived. It got me thinking, like, ‘Is it all worth it?’ This lifestyle and all the traveling we do.”
Lindsay Lohan and DJ Samantha Ronson, who are friends of Barker and AM, posted messages of their support and sympathy in their blogs. “Please send your prayers out to Adam Goldstein (AM) and Travis Barker, along with the other lost in the plane crash,” Lohan wrote in her blog. “It’s so scary to think that life can end so fast…we must all treasure each and every moment, and be thankful for what we have. All my love…xoxo L.”
Ronson followed Lohan’s feelings, as she began her blog by saying “My good friend adam (dj am) was in a plane crash last night, he was lucky to survive but is still in the hospital being treated for burns. I don’t really know what to say, it’s such horrifying news, but I was hoping you guys would please send him your best wishes/ prayers because I don’t really know what else to do. Also, for Travis Barker who was on the plane.” blogs Ronson. “ Four other people were on the plane and did not survive, I cant even imagine the pain their families must be in.”
Other artists that MTV News contacted were too astonished by the news to give a comment right away. Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta, who also was on tour with Barker’s +44, reflected those sympathetic feelings by saying, “Chris was an awesome dude and I’m shocked and saddened that his happened. I just don’t know what else to say beyond that.”
Travis Barker and DJ AM, who experienced second and third degree burns as victims of Friday night’s jet crash, are expected to make full recoveries.
Barker, the former Blink 182 drummer, sustained burns on his torso and lower body, and AM on a part of his head and arm. However, neither received any other injuries from the crash, and are currently in “critical but stable” condition.
Following the crash, the two were sent to a hospital in Columbia, South Carolina, however, they were then transported to the Still Center for treatment of “extensive burns”.
“I think these patients are going to make a full recovery,” Dr. Fred Mullins, the Still Center’s medical director told reporters. “Anybody who can survive a plane crash is very lucky.”
During a press conference, Mullins read a statement from the families of the two musicians. “The families wish to thank fans all over the world for their prayers and concern. Deepest sympathy is expressed to the loved ones who perished in the crash,” Mullins read. “As the two recuperate and mourn this loss, privacy for them, their families and friends is requested at this time.”
A spokesperson for the Still Center added in a statement that fans and friends of Barker and AM can show their support by accessing the hospital’s Web site, Doctors-Hospital.net. Click on “Visitors,” then “Email a Patient.
