Radiohead Guitarist Discusses New Albums, The Survival of Music

Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien denied frontman Thom Yorke’s prior claim that the band is finished with new albums.

In an interview with NME.com, O’Brien said the group is set to record their next album this winter under the production of Nigel Godrich.

“Typical Radiohead,” he joked, “We’re going into the studio in winter. It’s always miserable! When you’re in a studio in the countryside the music you make is definitely affected by what season it is.”

The announcement comes less than three weeks before the guitarist will appear in a debate on ‘Music’s Survival in the 21st Century’, organized by the Feature Artists Coalition (FAC).
The artist-only discussion, taking place in London, will also feature Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason, Marillion’s Mark Kelly and Master Shortie. Topics will include:
•The range of income streams available to featured artists today
•Discussion about direct-to-fan models such as those used by Radiohead, Marillion & Master Shortie

The debate will also include the state and goals of the FAC, whose founders include members of Blur, Pink Floyd, Travis, The Futureheads and many more.

A new Radiohead album will add to the constantly hectic workloads of O’Brien and Yorke. While the guitarist campaigns to ensure the proper compensation of musicians, Thom Yorke continues to work with his new experimental band in L.A.

But as usual, as their current work suggests, Radiohead’s music will be focused on musical passion over profit.

PINK FLOYD rocker ROGER WATERS is tired of behaving like a “snotty kid” and trying to look on the bright side of life.

The 63-year-old concedes getting older has helped change his negative take on life and he’s more inclined to “act nicely” towards other people.

He says, “I’m not misanthropic at all. I see glimmers of hope.

“I have to say, though, as I have grown older and dealt with one or two of my specific personal psychological, philosophical problems, I found it easier myself to be nicer to people than I used to be when I was a snotty kid, a snotty young man. Which is good.”

Pink Floyd Member Postpones Concerts

David Gilmour of Pink Floyd had to reschedule two shows in Venice after the stage he was set to perform on was deemed to be unsafe, BBC News reports.

The Friday evening show was cancelled a mere few hours before it was set to begin when the problem was caught after the sound check.

The concerts will be this weekend instead, and tickets sold for last weekend will be valid.

“Our most sincere apologies to all those who were supposed to attend these shows this weekend. A structural defect was discovered in the scaffolding just before the sound check this evening, which has rendered the whole stage structure unsafe,” the guitarist said on Friday about the cancellations.

Pink Floyd DVD Release Date Announced

Pink Floyd will release their long awaited DVD, “Pulse,” on July 11.

The two-disc set documents the band performing their album “Dark Side of the Moon” in its entirety live in concert during 1994’s Division Bell Tour.

Along with the concert, these discs will also have backstage footage and tons of extras, including footage of the band on the road.

It also includes the original screen films used when “Dark Side of the Moon” was recorded in the 1970s.

Pink Floyd released their first album in 1969 and their last album as a band ? “Divison Bell” ? in 1984 before the band broke up.

Pink Floyd’s hits include “Money”, “Wish You Were Here” and “Another Brick in the Wall.”

‘Pulse’ DVD Chronicles Final Pink Floyd Tour

Pink Floyd fans have been waiting a long time for this: The DVD debut of the band?s concert film ?Pulse? will be released in the U.K. on Dec. 5.

The EMI project, originally released in 1995 along with a double-disc CD set of the same name, follows the band during their final tour in 1994 in support of the album ?The Division Bell.?

The footage was taped during Pink Floyd?s record-breaking 14-night run at Earl?s Court in London.

According to Billboard, the second disc features the first-ever complete performance of their hit 1973 album ?Dark Side of the Moon.? The first disc offers older hits (?Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2,” “Learning To Fly”) and material from “The Division Bell” (”Keep Talking,” “Take It Back”).

The DVD graphics are designed by long-time Pink Floyd collaborator Storm Thorgerson. Extra features include the back-screen stage projections for such songs as “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” “High Hopes” and most of the “Dark Side of the Moon” material, as well as videos for “Learning To Fly” and “Take It Back.”

The feature ?Bootlegging the Bootleggers? includes bonus performances of four ?Division Bell? songs, while the documentary ?Goodbye to Life As We Know It? has never-before-seen footage of Pink Floyd on the road.

?Pulse? was a big hit in its original home video form, spending 176 weeks on Billboard?s Top Music Video chart. The album version debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 1.48 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Pink Floyd?s classic line-up recently reunited for a four-song set at London?s Live 8 concert in July. The one-off reunion was the first time Roger Waters, who left the group in the mid-1980s after a falling-out with other band members, has performed with Pink Floyd since 1981.

While some Africans were unaware a concert for their benefit was even occuring, record sales for the artists who performed at the free concerts were soaring.
HMV reports sales for Pink Floyd’s Echoes, which features three of the numbers they performed on Saturday, were up by over 1,300 percent on Sunday.

“Even allowing for the relative nature of this exercise … this snapshot still shows that the Live 8 concert is having a marked effect on sales of featured artist recordings,” said Gennaro Castaldo, spokesman for the HMV chain.

Pink Floyd has since announced they will donate the profits to the Aid for Africa fund and are encouraging other artists to do the same. The London performance of the Beatles classic “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” was already released over the Internet with all proceeds going to the campaign.

Meanwhile, in Africa, where most of the poor don’t even own a TV, only a fraction saw the event billed as the world’s biggest concert.

“I don’t know who Bob Geldof is,” said Edward Romoki in downtown Johannesburg, the site of the tacked-on African Live 8 venue.

Despite skepticism, many Africans are hopeful the impending meeting of the G8’s richest countries will yield results.

“I hope the G8 will find a solution to our problems,” said unemployed Isa Mlambo in Johannesburg. “They always promise, but I am hoping this time they will take action.”
And Paris Hilton, not to be overshadowed even by the biggest concert event in her lifetime to date, is defending her appearance at the London branch of the event.

Scissor Sister Ana Matronic slammed Hilton for attending the concert without understanding the reasons behind it. Hilton insists she will make up for her ignorance by reading about it while she’s preparing to marry Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis.

She says, “It’s such a great cause. It makes you realise how fortunate we are. I want to get more involved in this cause, so I’m going to read all the newspapers while I’m in Athens planning my wedding.”
