Movie Review: I Don’t Know How She Does It; I Don’t Know How I Watched It

The opening monologue of I Don’t Know How She Does It brings us straight back to the good old years of Sex and the City. However, the familiar Bradshaw-esque voiceover quickly moves into tedium as we realize it isn’t the lovable sex-obsessed journalist, but someone boring and unfamiliar, Kate Reddy, who just happens to be played by Sarah Jessica Parker.

Reddy is one of those career driven mothers who seems to have the ability to balance her professional life and her family. Although she is not a classic housewife home baking brownies from scratch, she makes due by imitating the same as she buys a pie from the grocery store and gives it that homemade imperfect touch by throwing flour on top. When she brings the pie to her daughter’s school for the dreaded bake sale, the “momsters”, as she calls them, proclaim “I don’t know how she does it.” After which they poke fun at Kate’s greasy hair and unkempt appearance.

Kate’s husband, Richard (Greg Kinnear), loves her deeply and manages to pick up her loose ends even when he is not getting any at home due to her busy schedule. The couple have two kids, a 2-year-old son and six-year-old daughter. Kinnear certainly plays charming father, a role he has embodied several times namely in the beloved Little Miss Sunshine. However, his character falls into the rudimentary abyss of his wife’s uniformity and is entirely forgettable.

Despite Kate’s chaotic life and anxious behavior she scores a deal with Jack Abelhammer (Pierce Brosnan) to be his financial analyst in a large deal. Abelhammer begins to fall for Kate and hints of infidelity are in the air. Again, SJP and Brosnan like SJP and Kinnear have no natural chemistry and the romance is never quite romantic in any sense of the word.

Ultimately the film seems like an attempt to reach out to working mothers and the difficulty they face against men in the workplace and women who view them as uncaring. The sexual politics are far from fully explored and the film remains at the level of fluff. I fear to even label it a romantic comedy because it wasn’t funny and certainly was not romantic. It falls into the category of the “nothing film”. Skip this one.

From one gorgeous man to another. James Bond star Pierce Brosnan has passed on his extensive knowledge of dealing with being a Hollywood heart-throb to Twilight star Robert Pattinson on the set of their new movie, according to msn.com.

The 56-year-old British actor appears in the new film Remember Me with the young Pattinson. Brosnan admitted that it was strange for him not to be the heart-throb in the movie.

“The list was long and the girls were many on the streets of New York City and his motor home was the epicentre of beautiful girls,” Brosnan said. “My motor home was quiet. When I started doing Bond there was a publicist that told me, ‘Grace under pressure.’ I said the same thing to Robert, ‘Grace under pressure.’ Celebrate and enjoy it.”

All-Star Cast Tapped To Play Greek Gods

Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, Kevin McKidd, Sean Bean and Melina Kanakaredes have signed on to play classical Greek gods in the fantasy-adventure “Percy Jackson.”

The Fox 2000 flick is being directed by Chris Columbus (“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”), who also co-adapted the screenplay from the best-selling children’s novel “The Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan.

The book, which draws from Greek mythology, follows Poseidon’s half-human son Percy on his “quest across modern America to prevent a war among the gods,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Logan Lerman (“3:10 to Yuma”) has already been cast as Percy, while Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson have been tapped as the other leads.

Appearing as the gods of Mount Olympus will be Brosnan as Chiron, Thurman as Medusa, Bean as Zeus, McKidd as Poseidon and Kanakaredes as Athena.

The movie is shooting in Vancouver for a February 2010 release.

It could mark the beginning of a “Harry Potter”-esque film franchise, as “Lightning Thief” is the first of five novels in Riordan’s series. The fifth and final book, “The Last Olympian,” is due in stores in May.

Brosnan Confirms his 007 Days Are Over

It’s official: Pierce Brosnan has turned in his spy badge.

Brosnan, who played James Bond in four movies, told Entertainment Weekly that he learned in a phone call that he would not be back for a fifth round.

“One phone call, that’s all it took!” he said. Initially, the news was a “titanic jolt to the system,” but then he felt “a great sense of calm.”

“I thought. … I can do anything I want to do now,” he said. “I’m not beholden to them or anyone. I’m not shackled by some contracted image. So there was a sense of liberation.”

His departure isn’t entirely unexpected, since he’s been dropping hints for a long time now that he was getting tired of the franchise. Brosnan said he’s grateful to have had the role, acknowledging that GoldenEye launched his movie career, but added: “It never felt real to me. I never felt I had complete ownership over Bond. Because you’d have these stupid one-liners – which I loathed – and I always felt phoney doing them.”

Eonline.com reports that GoldenEye director Martin Campbell will be returning to direct the latest film, Casino Royale, and the release date has already been set for Nov. 17, 2006. All they need is a Bond. It’s not like there’s a shortage of big name potentials – Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor and Clive Owen are only a few of the names that have been churned out by the Hollywood rumour mill. So just pick somebody to fill those suave shoes, dammit.

Whoever is chosen will become the sixth 007 in the franchise. Meanwhile, Brosnan fans can see him next in The Matador. He plays a foul-mouthed, skirt-chasing hit man.
