As it is, I’m pretty obsessed with Pentatonix as evidence by this, this and especially this. When you combine the Texas a capella group with another one of my obsessions, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘ “Thrift Shop” it’s like “WHAT IS MY LIFE?”

I’m pretty obsessed with their arrangement, which replaces the strong back beat with Kevin Olusola and Avi Kaplan’s sick beatboxing. Meanwhile, Mitch Grassi, Scott Hoying and Kirstie Maldonado rocked the fast-paced vocals.
The group also had a special announcement: They’re going on tour again, starting in late January. Find more about their shows and how to get tickets here.

We were all waiting for Pentatonix to put their a capella touch on Psy’s “Viral Hit” but we didn’t know they would be this pro about it. The quintet performed his viral hit, with Scott Hoying singing Psy’s versus in Korean and Avi Kaplan with Kevin Olusola on the backbeat.
The Texas group won the third season of The Sing-Off and have covered Nicki Minaj’s “Starships” and a Justin Bieber/Katy Perry mashup in the past. It’s a tough cover to do considering how many covers and parodies we’ve seen, but we love that they put their own spin on it.

This will be the last one, kay guys? I’m so sick of cover artists uploading “Somebody That I Used To Know” covers on YouTube, so let’s make this the final one. It’s appropriate considering singer Gotye uploaded it to his own account gotyemusic. The version includes all the YouTube covers he could find, including a cover by Ingrid Michaelson and another by Pentatonix. Gotye wrote under the description: “Reluctant as I am to add to the mountain of interpretations of Somebody That I Used To Know seemingly taking over their own area of the internet, I couldn’t resist the massive remixability that such a large, varied yet connected bundle of source material offered.??”
Name: Pentatonix
Song: “Starships” by Nicki Minaj
Why we’re obsessed: We’re really liking Pentatonix’s acappella twist on Nicki Minaj’s “Starships” and besides, who needs all those instruments when you can just create the sounds by your mouth? Duh! I must be really obsessed with this track, because we did a “Starships” cover two weeks ago, yet they sound completely different.
This group slowed down the song at times, but totally made it just as awesome as the original! I love how all their voices compliment one another and rotate on who sings and who makes the awesome beats and rhythms. It can almost be compared to a number done by Glee, except this one is obvs way cooler. I can see why this wicked cover has received almost 150,000 hits in three days.
Background: Based in Los Angeles, this five-member band covers a wide range of music all the way from pop and R&B to even electronic music in an acappella style for the most part, and upload their songs to their YouTube channel. They won Season 3 of NBC’s “The Sing-Off” and just released their first EP.
“Starships”
They go by the name of Pentatonix. If you were to look them up in the dictionary, the definition would say genious — because that’s exactly what this cover is. The group brought together two major hits (that you’re probs humming right now), Justin Bieber’s “As Long As You Love Me” and Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake.” Pentatonix seem to have that a cappella swag, that proves each member of the group has unique talent.
From winning NBC’s show The Sing-Off in November, they’ve continued to win over tons of fans with their modern sound and melodies. With over 13 million views on their YouTube channel, including past covers such as “Moves Like Jagger” and “We Are Young,” Pentatonix has their debut EP coming out on iTunes tomorrow!

From Gotye to Whitney Houston, A Capella singing group Pentatonix nails it again with their version of Fun’s teen anthem “We Are Young”.
Complete with perfect harmonies and some awesome beat boxing, the group certainly makes the song their own.
