Move aside presidents, becase vegetarians are taking over as the new face of American postage stamps.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have taken the faces of 20 of the most famous vegetarians in history and put them on a series of postage stamps, to be released tomorrow. The stamps are an example of PETA’s effort to put a stop to animal abuse.

“It’s just another way to be able to talk about what animals go through in slaughterhouses,” said Lisa Lange, vice president of PETA.

The stamps will be available on Peta’s website through December and possibly into January, just in time for us to send out those holiday cards.

The collection will include the faces of celebrities such as Russell Simmons, Woody Harrelson, Natalie Portman, Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett, Bryan Adams, Leona Lewis, Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, Bob Barker, Stevo-O, and Ellen DeGeneres.

The set of 20 will be completed with the famous faces of Morrissey, César Chávez, Leonardo da Vinci, Leo Tolstoy, Albert Schweitzer, Gandhi, Pythagoras and Johnny Appleseed.

“These are very influential people, and not everyone knows that these folks are vegetarian,” said Lange.

While it’s a little risky to put such a controversial organization in charge of a set of postage stamps that will be released to the public, I think it could actually be a good idea. It will definitely attract the attention of collectors, but it will also help PETA achieve its hopes it to in publicizing issues at hand regarding animal cruelty.

Heather Mills has left a hospital after receiving treatment for a shoulder injury she sustained during a skiing accident in Austria, Access Hollywood reports.

Best known as Paul McCartney’s ex-wife, Mills crashed on the Moelltaler glacier Wednesday and was flown by helicopter to a hospital in the southern city of Lienz. She was diagnosed with a fractured right shoulder blade.

She is expected to make a full recovery and was released midmorning Thursday. Mills, who uses a prosthetic leg, recently bought a house in southern Austria and is training there for the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games..

Mills said she crashed into a plastic pole that had turned as hard as steel due to the cold.

“That’s skiing, you know,” Mills said. Uh, I’m pretty sure ramming into a pole isn’t part of the sport.

Mills, a former model, married ex-Beatle McCartney in 2002. They divorced in 2008.

This is nice and all that she’s recovering, but my question is: why was a woman with one leg skiing? Seriously – that spells a recipe for disaster. What if her leg popped off! She must be quite the athlete to be able to balance on her one leg – I can’t even ski with both my legs.

CAD $34 million doesn’t go very far these days. Well, at least not in the hands of Heather Mills. The ex-wife of the legendary Beatle Paul McCartney has admitted that she has spent most of her CAD $34 million divorce settlement. It has only been 22 months since Mills received the money.

In an TV interview with psychologist Pamela Connolly, Mills said, “Most of it’s been given to charity, gone into ethical businesses or paid for a couple of properties for my daughter’s future security.”

Mills didn’t leave the interview without taking a few jabs at her ex-husband.

“I could never sit with millions of pounds in the bank that could make matters change,” said Mills. Sir Paul McCartney is estimated to be worth more than CAN $550 million.

On their personal relationship, Mills told Connolly, “It was one of the best 10 years of my life and one of the worst. I didn’t have any control. It took me years to realise that. In the end I had to walk away.”

Paul McCartney will receive the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, reports CBC. The former Beatle, 67, is the third person to receive the honour for songwriting, administered by the U.S. Library of Congress.

“It is hard to think of another performer and composer who has had a more indelible and transformative effect on popular song and music of several different genres than Paul McCartney,” said James H. Billington, Librarian of Congress.

“As a great admirer of the Gershwins’ songs, I am highly honoured to be given the Gershwin Prize by such a great institution,” McCartney said.

He will be honoured at a tribute concert in spring 2010.

Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon are the two former recipients of the Gershwin Prize, created in 2007.

Paul McCartney is set to share a day in the life of Stephen Colbert.

According to Comedy Central, the former Beatle will be a guest on the talk show host’s “The Colbert Report” today (Wednesday).

It is McCartney’s only scheduled U.S. late-night appearance in support of his latest album, “Electric Arguments,” which the musician recorded under the band name the Fireman alongside producer/musician Youth.

“The Colbert Report” airs on the Comedy Network and CTV in Canada.

Sir Paul McCartney wants Britain to adopt the Australian practice of “Meat-free Mondays,” to help the environment.

He told The Grocer, “A lot of people go to the gym on a Monday. With meat-free Mondays, it’s a bit like going to the gym but with the added advantage of protecting the planet.”

Because of the huge environmental impact of cattle rearing and meat production, this would mean that less meat would be eaten, so less animals would be needed to feed the population. Thus, the impact of the industry would be reduced.

McCartney points out that though he is a vegetarian, it’s the UN who is encouraging this action.

“One of the most significant conclusions of the recent report on climate change was that we should eat less meat. This is not the Vegetarian Society that said that. It’s the UN,” he said.

Sir Paul McCartney is inviting you over for dinner – a virtual dinner, that is.

On Thursday, fans of the former Beatle can log onto his website to register for “Night of a Thousand Dinners,” which will feature recipes for an all-vegetarian menu put together by TV chef Jamie Oliver.

For a minimum donation of $25, “dinner” guests will also be rewarded with a download of a new McCartney song, “Lifelong Passion (Sail Away).”

The song is the result of a collaboration between influential producer Youth and McCartney, who recorded the track under the name The Fireman.

It’s all for a good cause: Proceeds from the event, which takes place in conjunction with World Environment Day, will go to the Adopt-a-Minefield campaign.

The charity, for which McCartney is an ambassador, focuses on raising funds to clear arable land of landmines so that farmers can grow food.

You don’t need to go to school to get a degree at Yale. You just need to be a Beatle.

Sir Paul McCartney received an honourary doctorate of music from the University on Monday.

McCartney was present, wearing a sash and all, and was serenaded with “Hey Jude” as he received the honour.

“You have played every chord, touched every emotion, here, there, and everywhere,” said Yale president Richard Levin. “You have pushed the boundaries of the familiar to create new classic.”

Paul McCartney will have to shell out about $48.6 million to ex-wife Heather Mills in their highly publicized divorce case.

The U.K. usually maintains privacy laws pertaining to divorce cases but a court document was leaked Monday and revealed that a British judge awarded Mills $33 million, plus $15.6 million in assets.

The former Beatle and his estranged wife split in 2006 and the bitter divorce battle ensued. Mills accused McCartney of abusive behaviour and attacked the media for portraying her in a negative light.

Both parties were present at London’s High Court when the decision was ruled on Monday.

After the ruling, Mills told reporters that she was “pleased it’s over.”

McCartney’s camp said the 61-year old singer will not make a public statement on the issue.

Fans of SIR PAUL McCARTNEY have started a campaign to boycott his estranged wife HEATHER MILLS’ new reality show DANCING WITH THE STARS.

The former model made her debut on the show last night, in what is though to be an attempt to repair her image during a damaging divorce battle with the former BEATLE.

But McCartney devotees are urging TV viewers to turn their backs on the show.

One internet posting, on a site dedicated to the show, reads, “The best thing fans could do is not to watch the show at all, and her offers will immediately dry up. Why reward ABC for hiring her? Bad ratings are the best revenge.”

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY has been allowed to keep a wildlife-watching pavilion in the grounds of his East Sussex home, despite flouting strict planning permission laws.

Officials on England’s Rother District Council on Thursday gave their retrospective consent for the $1.9 million hut, which was built by the former BEATLE three years ago in the grounds of his 933-acre Peasmarsh estate and was often used as a hideaway by estranged wife HEATHER MILLS.

McCartney offered to remove the cabin – set on stone piers and featuring an outdoor observation deck – but councillors in Rother were keen to save the building, which officials have now deemed as “an acceptable design within the area of natural outstanding beauty”.

Woodlands Farm, where McCartney built the cabin, has been his family home for more than 25 years.

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY is planning to lay bare his feelings about his bitter divorce battle with HEATHER MILLS on his next studio album.

The former BEATLE split from his second wife Mills in May last year after four years of marriage, and began divorce proceedings in July.

Now the 64-year-old is set to reveal all to his fans in the follow up to 2005 release CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD, which is scheduled for next year.

Speaking to British newspaper the Daily Express, a source says, “Paul never stops writing songs and they often reflect what’s going on in his life at the time, even during his days as a Beatle.

“It’s now understood that tracks on his next album will include some direct references to his recent difficulties. He’s also said to have written a song to his three-year-old daughter BEATRICE, explaining to her how things turned out the way they did.

“Paul has been through a lot in his life and songwriting has long been a cathartic process.”

Former Beatle Paul McCartney and estranged wife Heather Mills’ divorce just keeps getting uglier and uglier.

On Thursday night, Mills called police to report the theft of paintings – worth an estimated $19.5 million – from the country estate the couple once shared. They included works by Picasso and Renoir.

“We checked the premises, and spoke to Heather Mills, and as a result it was found to be a civil matter between her and her husband,” Sussex Police spokesman Paddy Rea said. “There’s been no theft.”

The Sun newspaper reported on Friday that McCartney had taken the paintings and reprogrammed the lodge’s alarm codes and only text messaged his wife about it Thursday night.

McCartney and his wife announced their separation in May and began divorce proceedings in July. Ever since, the two have been throwing verbal attacks at each other in the media.

Heather Mills McCartney, the estranged wife of the Beatles’ Paul McCartney, has spoken out against rumours of a lover.

“I haven’t got a lover,” she says in an interview with “Extra,” set to air Tuesday and Wednesday. “It’s totally made up.”

Rumours have been circulating that Mills had developed a relationship with her personal trainer.

According to Reuters, Mills also says in the interview that she will “never” get married again.

Her relationship with McCartney ended in May after a four-year marriage. The two are currently embroiled in increasingly vicious divorce proceedings.

Wrinkly crooner Rod Stewart knows plenty about the ladies, so maybe former Beatle Paul McCartney should listen to this advice.

McCartney is battling with estranged wife and former model Heather-Mills McCartney over custody of their child and over allegations of domestic abuse.

“I am sure that Paul is not a wife beater. He may be a drug taker but he is no wife beater,” Stewart told BBC Radio 2. “His name has been slurred and I think he should fight. I don’t think he should settle. He should fight it all the way.”

Paul McCartney is ready for his day in court.

Reuters is reporting that the ex-Beatle plans to fight the allegations made by his soon-to-be-ex-wife Stella McCartney that he mistreated her and was violent.

“Our client will be defending these allegations vigorously and appropriately,” Payne Hicks Beach, McCartney’s lawyer, said in a statement.

“Since the breakdown of his marriage Sir Paul McCartney has maintained his silence in not commenting on the media stories believing that it was best for all concerned, particularly his children, for there to be some dignity in what is a private matter,” the statement said.

“Our client would very much like to respond in public and in detail to the allegations made recently against him by his wife and published in the press but he recognizes, on advice, that the only correct forum for his response to the allegations made against him is in the current divorce proceedings.”

Paul McCartney isn’t just the a singer, he’s now a registered trademark. McCartney’s company, MPL Communications, has applied to trademark the former Beatle’s name for use on his line of vegetarian food and fashion.

MPL also requested that McCartney’s name also be given to non-vegetable items like meat, fish, and poultry. This, said the singer’s spokesperson, “would give [McCartney] protection against his name being used on products he does not approve of.”

The application also listed items including dressing gowns, bathrobes, sportswear, swimwear, overalls, fancy dress, hosiery, and waistcoats as products the McCartney trademark would extend to. Anyone with objections to the application can file a complaint with the Trademarks Registry before a judiciary decision is made in three months.

After months of using his lawyers and spokespeople to comment for him, ex-Beatle Paul McCartney has finally spoken up for himself.

According to E! Online, the legendary musician briefly talked about his increasingly messy divorce from Heather Mills McCartney at a press conference this week.

When asked about the break-up, Paul said he was “okay” and “doing fine,” though he didn’t get into specifics.

“Life beats you down occasionally,” he said. “But I am the eternal optimist. No matter how rough it gets, there’s always light somewhere. The rest of the sky may be cloudy, but that little bit of blue draws me on.”

McCartney also revealed that he is using music to keep his spirits up.

“It’s something I love to do,” he said. “It’s something that sustains me. So I’m enjoying it, finishing this project off and also the next one.”

The London press conference was help to bring attention to McCartney’s new LP of classical music, “Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart).”

The disc hits stores on Tuesday.

Former Beatle Paul McCartney’s upcoming classical album, “Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart),” will premiere at London’s Royal Albert Hall on November 3.

It’s McCartney’s fourth classical album.

The work will be performed by the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Orchestra; London Voices; the boy singers of Magdalen College Choir, Oxford; and the boys of King’s College Choir, Cambridge.

Gavin Greenaway will conduct and Kate Royal will be the featured soprano. All appear on the studio recording, which will be released Tuesday by EMI Classics.

McCartney’s first classical album, “The Liverpool Oratorio,” was released in 1991.
