Noisey‘s Josh Haddow’s heart unintentionally melted a little bit at a recent Nicki Minaj concert, when he realized his undying affection for the American rapper. The resident musicologist routinely conducts anthropological field studies with music fans to cast a portrait of each subculture. He found Skrillex fans to be mildly inarticulate while One Direction fans were pretty defensive.
What he discovered about Nicki Minaj’s fans: they’re great fun and pretty eclectic. However, his study was suddenly interrupted upon laying eyes on a Nicki Minaj poster and changing the course of his questions. “Do I stand a chance with Nicki Minaj?” he asked fans. He returned to his hotel room with a renewed sense of hope and vigour for life. Nicki Minaj can do that to you…

Since a huge portion of the Internet is devoted to cats like Olive, Mittens, Puffy, Niko, and General Bonkers, they participated in this “Gangnam Style” survey to see if Psy’s message relates to fluffy (or sometimes not fluffy) kittens. Thanks Noisey.
If you were to take an anthropological look at Skrillex fans, you’d probably note their unique garb (undercuts, neon facepaint and the occasional exposed breast) and their behaviour (ripping the shirts off at chubba chubba and swinging it at boom boom).
That’s precisely what Josh Haddow, trainee musicologist does. More precisely, he studies music fans in searach of a deeper understanding of humanity. In Noisey‘s “Who Actually Listens To… Skrillex?” Haddow conducted field research by doing first person interviews with the dubstep producer’s fans.
Are dubstep fans merely vague an inarticulate? Or are they part of a new revolutionary movement? The episode is absolutely hilarious and I’m crossing my fingers they keep going. I’d love to watch Haddow be thrown into the throngs of boy band fangirls. What do you say to a One Direction concert next?
