Fewer Gay Characters on Network TV, Says GLAAD
There will be fewer gay characters on network television this season, as compared to last, the Associated Press reports.
Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) reports that there is expected to be nine gay characters on network television this season. GLAAD says there were 10 gay characters on network television last season.
GLAAD looked at about 95 primetime comedies and dramas from the ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, CW and MyNetworkTV networks.
The committee also says that while the numbers are relatively constant, the gay presence on network television will definitely be diminished because of the cancellation of shows like “Will & Grace” which featured gay characters in a lead, prominent role.
“It’s clear that the broadcast networks have a long way to go before they accurately reflect the diversity of their audience and our society,” GLAAD president Neil G. Giuliano said.
