Universal Lot Engulfed in Flames – MTV Movie Awards Still On

A fire tore through Universal Studios Sunday morning. The blaze broke out just before dawn on a back-lot soundstage, destroying a building housing the King Kong exhibit and threatened the studio’s film fault.

About 200 city and county firefighters joined studio firefighters to extinguish the blaze. Helicopters dropped water onto the burning lot as 100 foot flames overtook the structures. One firefighter is said to be injured, although his condition is yet to be determined.

Eliot Sekuler of Universal Studios said the hilltop theme park was not damaged and would still be open today, which is good news for the MTV Movie Awards. The ceremony is set to take place today, with Mike Myers hosting live from Universal’s Gibson Amphitheatre.

Celebrities expected at the awards are Sarah Jessica Parker, Adam Sandler, Lindsay Lohan, Liv Tyler, Anne Hathaway, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Wahlberg, Jennifer Hudson, James Franco, Paris Hilton, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, Nikki Blonsky, Coldplay and the Pussycat Dolls.

Wedding Crashers Tops MTV Awards

It’s not exactly the Oscars (the trophies are made of golden popcorn, after all) but “Wedding Crashers” was the big winner at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards on Saturday night.

Coming in second for most awards was gay-cowboy-extravaganza “Brokeback Mountain.” Jake Gyllenhaal won the Best Performance Award, but also picked up the Best Kiss Award on behalf of himself and absent co-star Heath Ledger.
