‘Monsters Vs. Aliens’ Has Mighty Opening Day

3-D animated feature “Monsters vs. Aliens” conquered the competition by debuting with $16.7 million at the domestic box office Friday.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the strong showing puts the DreamWorks Animation flick on track to rake in more than $50 million through Sunday.

A host of Hollywood stars lend their voices to the sci-fi adventure, including Reese Witherspoon, Kiefer Sutherland, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Hugh Laurie, Rainn Wilson and Stephen Colbert as the President.

The family-friendly pic is playing on about 7,000 screens in the U.S. and Canada, with just over 2,000 of those showing it in 3-D.

“The Haunting in Connecticut” also had a respectable debut, taking in $9.6 million to notch the No. 2 spot behind “Monsters” for Friday’s box office totals. The horror film stars Virginia Madsen and Elias Koteas and is billed as the true story of one family’s encounter with the supernatural.

The weekend’s other major release, “12 Rounds,” opened with $1.8 million to take the No. 6 spot on Friday. The cop thriller was directed by “Die Hard 2″ helmer Renny Harlin and stars professional wrestler John Cena.

Get ready for another Very Bad Day, Jack Bauer.

The hit counterterrorism drama “24″ and its beleaguered agent are returning for an eighth season, star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland told the Associated Press Tuesday.

The Fox action series will begin shooting its new season in May, around the same time its current seventh season ends.

“If I was going to liken ’24′ to a girlfriend, ’24′ has been really good to me. And I need to be really good back,” Sutherland said.

“There are plays I want to do. There are so many different things I would like to do, but I was so fortunate to be part of something like ’24′ that my focus is still on that right now.”

He added that whether or not the show continues beyond the eighth season won’t be up to him. “The real pressure is placed on the writers. It’s a real question about how much they feel they can give and what they can do.”

Sutherland recently tackled some lighter fare by lending his voice to the 3-D animated movie “Monsters vs. Aliens.” The sci-fi adventure, which features Sutherland as General W.R. Monger and also stars the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen and Hugh Laurie, hits theatres Friday.
