Miss Puerto Rico Wins Miss Universe, then Faints

Zuleyka Rivera Mendoza, the newly crowned Miss Universe who hails from Puerto Rico, fainted a mere 40 minutes after she was crowned, Reuters reports.

“She’s OK. She’s fine. She got dizzy. Its very hot up here. Her dress is tight – as you could see it was beaded and heavy. She passed out,” Lark Anton, pageant representative, said to Reuters.

The fainting spell came on stage after a news conference. Mendoza’s head apparently fell to her chest, where she stayed for 10 seconds before she collapsed into the arms of an assistant for the pageant.

She was then rushed off the stage. A few minutes later, it was announced Mendoza would be fine; that she had just fainted.

Pageant officials maintain that the new Miss Universe had enough to eat on the day of the competition.

Canada is having a tough time.

The Sporting News recently had a survey that ranked the top sports cities in North America, and Canada’s highest ranked city, Toronto, came in at no. 38.

The Nation Brands Index recently ranked Australia as the top branded city in the world. Coming in second, Canada.

Canada is even lacking in hockey, the country’s most beloved pastime. A Canadian team has not won the Stanley Cup in 12 years.

But Natalie Glebova has changed that pattern. Glebova, the reigning Miss Canada, won the Miss Universe crown at the end of May. Finally, Canada is tops.

Glebova, 23, was born in Russia and moved to Canada when she was 12. She recently graduated from Ryerson University, receiving her Bachelor of Commerce in Information Technology Management.

As a Ryerson student, it was only logical to hook up with Natalie for an interview when she was in Toronto last month, her first time back since winning the Miss Universe crown.

Natalie talked about the relevency of pagents, what she wants to do after her year as Miss Universe is over, and the worst pickup line she has received since being crowned (sorry, that answer may dissapoint you if you’re looking for something witty).

Toronto Mayor Says Sorry to Miss Universe

Natalie Glebova, the 23-year old Ryerson grad who won this year’s Miss Universe title, was sent an apology from Toronto Mayor David Miller, after her hometown did not honor her accomplishments.

Glebova was supposedly scheduled to open a Thai festival in Nathan Phillips Square, but after the annoucement, she was banned, due to a city bylaw that prevents activities deemed degrading to men or women through sexual stereotyping.

“It was like a knife in the heart,” she told the National Post. “It seemed so silly. Everywhere else, I get great reaction from political leaders. But my hometown?”

As well, she could not wear her sash or tiara, or even be referred to as Miss Universe, had she appeared at the festival.

Glebova won the prestigious title nearly two months ago in Bangkok.

The mayor issued an appology on Tuesday.
