Mickey Rourke To Star In Gangster Caper

Mickey Rourke, who scored the best actor prize at last month’s Golden Globes, has signed on to star in the gangster caper “Broken Horses.”

The film marks the Hollywood debut of Indian writer-director Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who also penned the story on which the movie will be based.

In a statement, Chopra revealed that he met Rourke after a special screening of “The Wrestler” and was “bowled over” by the actor’s performance in the film, which has also earned Rourke an Oscar nomination.

“Both of us had an instant connect when we met in Los Angeles,” said Chopra. “He was my first choice and was finalized even before he won the Golden Globe.

“It’s great to have him on board for one of the key roles in the film. Mickey deserves all the acclaim he is getting, and I hope he wins the Oscar as well.”

Chopra, who is one of India’s best-known filmmakers, was himself nominated for an Oscar in the nonfiction short category for his 1979 film “An Encounter With Faces.”

“Broken Horses” is slated to shoot in New Mexico and New York.
