Hundreds of mourners are paying their respects to LUCIANO PAVAROTTI, whose body is laying in state in his hometown of Modena, Italy.
The tenor lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on Thursday (06Aug07) at the age of 71.
Residents of Modena and fans who have travelled from far afield lined up
outside Modena Cathedral on Friday (07Sep07) to view his body. His widow
Nicoletta is also at the cathedral.
Members of the public are allowed to visit Pavarotti until Saturday
(08Sep07), when his funeral will take place.
Italy is meanwhile in mourning for one of its greatest ever talents. On
Friday, each national newspaper paid it’s own tribute; Corriere della Sera
proclaimed, “The world cries for its most famous Italian as an era ends,” and
La Stampa described the star as the “best known, best loved” Italian.

Late opera star LUCIANO PAVAROTTI had grown tired of listening to his own music by the time of his death on Thursday (06Sep07), and preferred to hear the sounds of fellow tenor PLACIDO DOMINGO more than anything else.
The Italian legend passed away aged 71 at his home in Modena, Italy, after battling pancreatic cancer since last year (06).
And although his illness meant he was no longer able to perform with his
peers Domingo and Jose Carreras, the singers remained close friends right until the very end.
Speaking in his last ever interview, with Italian newspaper Corriere della
Sera, he said: “Despite my condition, the fellowship of the Three Tenors has not been dissolved. Placido Domingo has come to see me a couple of times. Jose Carreras phones me.
“We had a great run. But I don’t listen to myself any longer. I don’t want to
hear myself. If you were to invite me to dinner and, in an effort to please me, you put on one of my old records, I’d turn on my heels. If you wanted me to stay, then you could play me Placido.” (MT/WNBGU/ES)

Opera legend LUCIANO PAVAROTTI has died, his manager has announced. He was 71.
The Italian tenor was said to be in a “very serious” condition on Wednesday (05Sep07) night, after falling unconscious. A local TV news station in Modena, northern Italy, reported Pavarotti was on his death bed after suffering kidney failure.
Friends and family held a bedside vigil at the singer’s home in Modena on
Wednesday, but the star died in the early hours of Thursday morning (06Sep07).
His death follows a recent spell of ill health – Pavarotti was admitted to
hospital last month (Aug07) to undergo treatment for pancreatic cancer, and underwent surgery for cancer last year (06) and has since had at least five rounds of chemotherapy.
He is survived by his four daughters: three with first wife Adua and one with second wife Nicoletta Mantovani – who gave birth to Alice in January 2003 – and one granddaughter. (JC/WNWCCB/)

Despite having recently undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer, opera singer Luciano Pavarotti plans to resume his farewell tour in 2007.
“I have every intention of returning to singing,” the 70-year-old told Italy’s La Stampa newspaper. “I’ll have to discuss it with the doctors, but I think I’ll start again next year.”
Earlier this month, the remaining scheduled dates on Pavarotti’s farwell tour were cancelled after the surgery.
He had been preparing to leave the United States for a string of shows in the UK when doctors found the malignant mass. Surgeons were able to remove the tumour completely, according to Pavarotti’s manager, Terri Robinson.
The tenor also told the Italian paper that he wants to return to Italy in the near future to continue the recovery process.
Legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti is recovering in hospital after having surgery for pancreatic cancer.
The farewell tour that he was set to commence this week has been pushed back until 2007.
Last week, the 70-year-old Italian singer was in New York preparing for the tour when routine medical tests landed him in the hospital.
“Mr. Pavarotti underwent a diagnostic evaluation and a malignant pancreatic mass was identified,” said his manager, Terri Robson. “Fortunately, the mass was able to be completely removed at surgery.”
Robson added that Pavarotti will remain under the care of doctors in New York and be treated over the coming months.
Several dates on his farewell tour have already been cancelled this year after other medical setbacks, including back problems.
Concerts affected by this latest set of cancellations include four Canadian dates: October 14 in Calgary, October 18 in Vancouver, October 22 in Montreal and October 25 in Toronto. Rescheduled dates have not been confirmed.
