Remember the “mildly” haggard looking woman (often mistaken for a man) who appeared on Britain’s Got Talent? Sure you do, she’s none other than Susan Boyle. TMZ reports that she was straight up snubbed by The Velvet Underground’s former front man, Lou Reed, when he refused to let her sing his song, ” A Perfect Day,” on “America’s Got Talent.”
Why would Reed snub the ever-so-popular Boyle? Apparently he is not her biggest fan. Maybe it is because Susan Boyle is not American. Her thick Scottish accent could definitely do major damage to the song and with the current turmoil of the United States, patriotism is a must. Or maybe this is yet another comment on her appearance. Christ man, not everyone looks like Nico.
Perhaps “Lonesome Cowboy Boyle” would have been a more appropriate song to choose. Unfortunately, Boyle had “Oh Sweet Nuthin’” to sing on the show after she was shut down by Reed. Obviously Boyle is a great singer but it does seem a little strange for her to choose the song in the first place. Perhaps Reed should have acknowledged her attempt to “Take a Walk on the Wild Side.” In any case, America’s Got Talent refused to comment on the subject and Boyle was so utterly heartbroken that she hopped on the first plane out of LAX back to Britain.
Boyle just can’t catch a break. First she is criticized for her appearance and then she is publicly denounced by Reed. It seems as though Boyle, like Reed, may be headed underground.
American rock icon Lou Reed now has another outlet to share his love of music: his own weekly radio show.
Reed has teamed up with music producer Hal Willner as co-hosts of “Lou Reed’s New York Shuffle,” which premieres on Sirius Disorder channel 70 at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
The two men recently collaborated on the concert film “Berlin,” based on Reed’s 1973 album of the same name. The film will open in New York and Los Angeles on July 18.
According to Reed, the show will cover a variety of musical genres, reflecting his own diverse tastes.
“I’ve always been a fan of eclectic radio, such as FM radio in the past when you could hear stations play widely divergent music, ranging from rock to country to jazz to opera,” Reed said in a statement.
“I loved the days when DJs who did their own programming set the bar high. I learned from these DJs and it’s a delight, with my friend Hal Willner, to do this type of radio today.”
The 66-year-old musician is the latest artist to feature on Sirius – others with their own show include E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt and B-52s frontman Fred Schneider.
Reed is perhaps best known as the guitarist and principal singer-songwriter of influential American band The Velvet Underground between 1965 and 1973. He also began a solo career in 1971, which he continues to this day.
