Legendary singer Lou Rawls has died at age 72, his publicist said this morning.

Rawls, the 3-time Grammy winner, died early this morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He entered hospital last month to treat lung and brain cancer. He was diagnosed with lung cancer two years ago, and brain cancer last year.

His wife Nina was at his side when he died, publicist Paul Shefrin said.

Rawls’ music transcended just one genre. He touched on rhythm and blues, pop, soul, jazz and gospel, amongst others.

In his career which spanned five decades, Rawls recorded more than 75 albums and appeared in such movies as “Blues Brothers 2000” and “Leaving Las Vegas.”

His big hits included “Love Is a Hurtin’ Thing” and “Dead End Street.”
