President Barack Obama’s controversial statement hadn’t even aired yet when he got on the phone from Air Force One Thursday night to apologize for comparing his infamously bad bowling skills to the Special Olympics.
While on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno, Obama talked about how he’d gotten better at bowling and had been practicing in the Whilte House bowling alley. It was toward the end of his approximately 40-minute taping when he told Leno, “I bowled a 129.”
Leno replied with a sarcastic, “That’s very good, Mr. President.”
Jay Leno and Jimmel Kimmel have come up with a way to skirt the problem of booking guests during the television writers’ strike, at least for one night: They will appear on each other’s late-night talkshows.
Leno announced Sunday that the swap will occur on Thursday, with Kimmel appearing on “The Tonight Show,” which is taped in Burbank, Calif., and Leno guesting on “Jimmel Kimmel Live,” which is taped in Hollywood.
Both shows are taped and aired on the same day.
“There are only a few people in the world that know how tough this job is,” Leno said. “Jimmy is one of them. It will be fun to discuss who’s a good guest, who’s a difficult guest and everything else that comes with sitting behind these desks.”
“If Jay and I can come together and guest on each other’s shows, then surely there is hope for peace in the Middle East,” Kimmel joked.
The late-night talkshows returned with new episodes on Wednesday, but only David Letterman and Craig Fergusons’ shows were back with their writers after a separate deal was struck between independent company Worldwide Pants and the Writers Guild of America.
The Screen Actors Guild has encouraged its members to appear on those two shows, and says appearances on other talk shows will be considered as crossing the picket line.
Meanwhile, Monday will mark the return of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert Report with Stephen Colbert,” but without their writers.
Late Night TV junkies, prepare to get your fix. At last.
After months of the writer’s strike forcing many shows into repeats, Jimmy Kimmel announced his triumphant return to late night as soon as Jan. 2. On that same night, the regular night time NBC lineup is slotted to hit the airwaves at long last.
However, Kimmel is not yet permitted to use any written material submitted by the show’s writers – and will be forced to ad-lib from the top of the show to the bottom. But, it isn’t just Kimmel who might find himself in the midst of a tough crowd, Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien will also be relying on their own wit to carry them through their entire shows.
In a statement made Tuesday, Kimmel expressed his anger about going on with the shows without his writers.
“Though it makes me sick to do so without my writers, there are more than a hundred people whose financial well-being depends on our show,” Kimmel stated. “It is time to go back to work. I support my colleagues and friends in the WGA completely and hope this ends both fairly and soon.”
In the past months of the strike, Kimmel’s show has been in constant repeats. Many of his own friends and family are employed as writers on staff, making this past time particularly hard for the comedian.
Leno and O’Brien are also to air on Jan. 2.
As the Writers Guild of America and studio negotiators return to the bargaining table, NBC is digging deep into its archives for some vintage Leno.
The network is going back as far as 15 years for five classic episodes of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” featuring the first headliner apperances of some of today’s biggest names.
Next week, viewers can catch a 1992 episode with Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts in 1993, 1995 appearances by Jennifer Aniston and Johnny Depp and a 2000 episode featuring Matt Damon.
Ratings for late-night shows like “Leno” and “The Late Show With David Letterman” have been down as CBS and NBC continue to air repeats during the WGA strike.
Late-night show producers are now turning to their archives as they run out of recent episodes to repeat.
TERI HATCHER was shocked during an appearance on THE TONIGHT SHOW with JAY LENO on Friday, when she was shown a videotape of former US President GEORGE BUSH patting her on the behind.
The DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES star had lunch with Bush in Los Angeles recently and had no idea why media reports were making such a big deal out of a friendly lunch.
When the talk show host asked her about their relationship she joked, “That’s my other boyfriend. We were having lunch talking about a charity thing that I’m involved in with him and MRS BUSH.
“When we left the place, one of the things we had been talking about at lunch was that I got this new Mercedes. So when we left, he wanted to see my car, so he walked me to my car.
“Somebody caught some video, I haven’t seen it.”
When Leno insisted that the former president “patted her on the a**” Hatcher said adamantly, “I don’t think that’s true. You would think if the president patted you anywhere you would know. I don’t recall the president patting me.”
Leno then played the footage, which showed Bush patting Hatcher on the behind twice while telling her goodbye.
A stunned Hatcher squealed after watching the tape, “Now I see what everybody’s been talking about!”
