James Franco Responds to Oscar Criticism

We’ve all heard what Twitter, Facebook and essentially every other news source has had to say about James Franco’s hosting duties at this year’s Oscar ceremonies.

Everyone thought he had pulled a Pineapple Express. Was he stoned?

This Friday on CBS’s Late Night with David Letterman, we’ll hear what Franco himself has to say.

Letterman, 63, received some heavy criticism after his 1995 Oscar appearance also.

“I was so bad that they talked for a while about shutting down the motion picture industry. … I was God awful,” recalls Letterman. However, 32-year-old Franco one-uped the late-night King by arguing that nobody accused him of being on drugs.

“They didn’t say you were stoned,” Franco says. “People said I was under the influence.” He compared his stoner-demeaner to his co-host Anne Hathaway’s over energetic display of musical-child-syndrome.

“I think the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned standing next to Anne. She has a lot of energy!,” says Franco. “I haven’t watched it back yet. Maybe I had low energy? I honestly played those lines as well as I could.”

Following this year’s Oscars, part of the criticism noted that Franco’s over-exhaustion in taking on more than is humanly capable is not an excuse to justify his lacklustre performance. Critics felt that he should have taken the gig more seriously than he did.

“I never dreamed of being, like, the best Oscar host ever,” he says on Friday night’s episode. “It was never on my list of things to do. It doesn’t mean I didn’t care and it doesn’t mean I didn’t try hard, right?”

Letterman reassures Franco through his classic wizardry of words, ”There will be, I think for you, a modicum of embarrassment, which you shouldn’t feel. That will pass. You’ll go into a period of numbness, and then you’ll become rightly defiant.”

Could Jimmy Fallon Be Cancelled?

Could Jimmy Fallon be the next Conan O’Brien? Rumors are circulating that the “Late Night” host could be next on the chopping block at NBC due to sagging ratings, according to the New York Post.

Nielsen ratings have indicated that viewership for Fallon’s late-night talk show has dropped 20 per cent since this time last year. Additionally Fallon is being killed by his competition at CBS and ABC.

“NBC executives are concerned about the ratings drop and are doing all they can to promote Fallon,” one insider told the Post. “They’re even dragging him out of bed in the morning to do the Today show to promote his own show.”

However NBC still maintain that they support Jimmy Fallon and are pleased with the show’s performance. A spokesperson for the network said, “We are huge Jimmy Fallon fans and could not be happier with his performance. Fallon continues to win night after night in the key demographic.”

David Letterman Ready to Put the Pieces Back Together

After the shocking truths about his sex scandal surfaced last year, David Letterman is ready to rebuild his marriage with wife Regina.

The Late Show host’s marriage and image was very publicly put through some rough times late last year when a sex scandal and extortion plot involving Letterman sleeping with coworkers broke. Letterman is, however, ready to put things back together, or at least try.

As E! Online reports David Letterman made an appearance on Live! With Regis and Kelly and spoke about life at home and the struggle to repair a situation that has gone down the drain. Letterman’s personal life has been quiet as of the past little while, but appearing on the popular talk show this morning, Letterman spoke about the current state of his relationship.

Though the time was mostly filled with quips and typically light material, at the end of the interview Regis Philbin asked Letterman a question about how life at home was, which sparked a heart-felt answer.

First acknowledging the past, Letterman said, “You know when something like this happens—and mostly it was reckless behaviour on my part—and if you behave recklessly and it hurts your family, well then of course it hurts you.”

The late night star seemed to be genuinely hurt by the whole ordeal and, as the rest of the interview suggested, ready to start over. He compared his life to a bomb exploding but remained optimistic that he would be able to put the pieces back together.

“It was stupid behaviour. You take a look at the explosion and it knocks you down, and you wake up every morning and you’re scared and you’re depressed and sad and you kind of gotta let that knock you down…and pretty soon you’ve gotta start knocking it down.”

“And then when that happens, you’re able to take a look at the pieces left of your life, because you think an explosion has taken place, and you’re looking at the shards and you see, well, can we put this back together? And by god, maybe you can put it back together, and maybe it won’t be the same, but maybe it’ll be different—maybe it can even be better in a different way.”

Letterman seems to have just a vague idea of what to expect in the future for his personal life, but kudos to him for keeping a positive outlook on the situation.

Though he has talked about the scandal previously on his own show, this morning marks the first time he has publically addressed the matters outside of the Late Show studio.

Without a focus on being funny, appearing on Live! With Regis and Kelly gave Letterman the chance to deliver his message: He is hopeful and starting to rebuild his relationship with wife Regina.

Letterman also thanked his friends, Philbin included, for supporting him through this time.

Conan O’Brien Hitting the Road

Conan O’Brien is hitting the road because what else do you do when you’re out of work? E! News reports that O’Brien will have live performances across the country starting in April.Conan will announce the dates via his Twitter page.

Sources say the performance will be a live theatrical revue. There is no word whether the rest of Conan’s entourage such as Andy Richter and Triumph the Insult Dog will be joining the comedian. But the show will combine music and comedy, hearkening back to what O’Brien did back in 2004 when he transplanted NBC’s Late Night to Toronto for a string of shows

NBC Gives Conan O’Brien Two Options

As first reported yesterday, there is a late night shake up going on at NBC. It turns out that the NBC executives want to move Jay Leno back to his 11:30 time slot, which begs the question “What will happen to Conan?” Well TMZ reports that NBC has given Conan two options.

Option 1: – Conan stays at NBC and is given the midnight to 1:00am time slot, after Leno airs at 11:30.

Option 2 – Conan says “goodbye” to NBC and Leno’s show is an hour, starting at 11:30.

We will have to wait and see how this plays out, however you can be sure Conan’s agents are having some conversation with other networks.

Well that was short lived. TMZ is reporting that there is a late night shakeup taking place at NBC. After the Olympics Jay Leno will be returning to his 11:30 time slot. The question still to be answered is if Jay’s show will be a half hour followed by Conan, or an hour and goodbye Conan. TMZ reports further that both comedians are aware of the changes.

Interestingly Conan has been on thin ice before with NBC. When O’Brien first appeared in 1993 with Late Night with Conan O’Brien, the show appeared with generally unfavorable reviews and dismal ratings. NBC was very close to canceling the show altogether but O’Brien bounced back. Let’s hope he can do the same.

Jimmy Fallon Officially Taking Conan’s Seat

It’s official: Jimmy Fallon has a steady job again.

The 33-year-old SNL alum has finalized talks to take over as host of “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.” O’Brien will be moving into Jay Leno’s old digs when he retires next year.

At a news conference in New York on Monday, Fallon claimed that “It’s a comedian’s dream to get this job.” He also said that he had missed performing for a live audience.

Fallon will be right at home at the NBC talk show, with SNL creator Lorne Michaels as his boss again.

It’s been a good year for Fallon. He recently married Nancy Juvonen, Drew Barrymore’s producing partner.
