John Mayer & Tony Bennett ‘One For My Baby’ Official Video

Posted by @coltondaniel on February 1st, 2012

Tony Bennett’s comeback season has been luring for several years, it continues to reign with his John Mayer collaboration on “One For My Baby (And One More for the Road)”

It’s a tasteful cover of a classic,  but what is most fascinating is their mutual love and respect for the music and eachother. The clip is a part of Bennett’s upcoming DVD special that also features his duets with Aretha Franklin, Lady Gaga, Willie Nelson, Michael Buble and many others.

Bennett’s follow up to his triple-Grammy winning “Duets I” album is closer to his jazz and classic repertoire and also features one of the last recordings and music videos from Amy Winehouse, “Body and Soul,” before her death on July 23, 2011. It has plenty of surprises like Lady Gaga taking on “The Lady is a Tramp.”

“Duets II: The Great Performance” DVD is set for release on March 6.

Lady Gaga’s Boyfriend Wants Her To Be Normal

Posted by Natalia Buia on January 30th, 2012

Do you ever wonder what it would be like to date one of the biggest pop stars in the world?

Lady Gaga seems like she’s too hot to handle in relationship. She’s constantly touring and shooting flamboyant videos. She must also have one of the weirdest closets of all time. She’s the type of girl to wear 10-inch platforms and dresses made out of cold cuts.  The 25-year-old isn’t your typical girl next door that her current boyfriend desperately wants her to be.

30-year-old actor/model Taylor Kinney, has been by her side for the past six months. In Touch Magazine writes Taylor’s the one who keeps Gaga grounded the most.

Gaga, who’s known to be a dramatic diva, is told by Taylor to “check her alter-ego at the door” when they’re together. Sources say the singer’s trying to tone down her crazy look and partying habits for her boyfriend. We’ll see how long this will last.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Zoolander Gets Vertigo-ed

Posted by @coltondaniel on January 21st, 2012

It all began when actress Kim Novak criticized The Artist for using Bernard Herrman’s iconic Vertigo score – and now, it’s turned into the hottest mash-up trend on the internets.

“I want to report a rape. My body of work has been violated by ‘The Artist,’” Novak wrote in a press release. “This film took the love theme music from ‘Vertigo’ and used the emotions it engenders as its own. Alfred Hitchcock and Jimmy Stewart can’t speak for themselves, but I can. It was our work that unconsciously or consciously evoked the memories and feelings to the audience that were used for the climax of The Artist.”

In the other corner, The Artist director Michel Hazanavicius responded, ”I love Bernard Hermann and his music has been used in many different films and I’m very pleased to have it in mine.”

It’s been used in everything from Kill Bill to Lady Gaga’s prologue in her “Born This Way” music video – really no surprise though, all she does is hijack old concepts.

Amongst the various copy-and-pastes some of our favourites include: ”The Notebook,” “Black Swan,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Top Gun,” “127 Hours,” “Badlands,” “Oldboy,” “Alien,” “Rocky“ and there are so many more (about 60 entries) over at the contest in IndieWire’s blog, “Press Play,”.

But none of them compare to this brilliance – mashing up Zoolander’s freak gasoline fight accident scene with Herrman’s mastery, Enjoy:

13 Songs That Famously Ripped Off Others

Posted by @coltondaniel on January 14th, 2012

There’s a fine line between sampling a song and straight ripping off someone else’s artistic integrity. Imitation is recognized as the highest form of flattery – but at what point does it go too far?

Most recently, Madonna finally spoke out about her insane influence of Lady Gaga, with focus on ‘Born This Way‘ and it’s similarity with Madge’s 1989 hit ‘Express Yourself’. And in the spirit of that buzz – we’re delighted to bring you a little sampling, thirteen songs that famously ripped off others (and were pretty successful in their own right). Some of which dealt with court settlements and others were able to slip through the legal cracks. For those arguing that the likes of Hammer and Vanilla Ice had the right to sample – both were busted by the predecessors for their use. Ice even argued in an episode of VH1′s ‘Behind the Music’ that it was completely original and the sampling accusations were bogus.

Tell us what you think! Below are thirteen examples, first being the song that ripped off the following song:

Jennifer Lopez “On The Floor (Ft. Pitbull)” VS. Los Kjarkas “Lloranda se fue”

Madonna Feels Lady Gaga Is ‘Reductive’

Posted by @coltondaniel on January 14th, 2012

Madonna has finally expressed herself on how she truly feels about Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’.

It isn’t news that Gaga’s musical, fashion style and overall success is a reproduction of Madge’s success formula. But until this week she has remained practically silent about the whole fiasco. Many have criticized that Gaga’s hit had basically ripped off Madonna’s 1989 song ‘Express Yourself’.

“I thought, ‘this is a wonderful way to redo my song,” said Madonna in an interview with Newsweek’s Jacob Bernstein. “I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was interesting.”

On last night’s 20/20 with Cynthia McFadden, she revisited the first time that she heard ‘Born This Way’ on the radio – finding Gaga’s references “amusing and flattering and well-done”

“It feels reductive,” she replied. “Look it up.”

Being the friendly folk that we are, we saved you the trouble of Googling and the 20/20 interview can be found below:

re-duc-tive
adjective: 1. tending to present a subject or a problem in simplified form, esp. one
viewed as crude.
2. (with reference to art) minimal: “reductive abstract shapes”

Obama Sings Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’

Posted by Natalia Buia on January 12th, 2012

YouTube user Barackdubs has uploaded footage of Obama on the podium to create the entire delivery of Lady Gaga’s hit anthem “Born This Way”.

Obama doesn’t actually sing but his voice and all the words found in the “Born This Way” lyrics are used. It’s a genius creation that must have taken the YouTube user hours to complete.

Obama and Lady Gaga may never perform together on stage but they have met in person to discuss anti-bullying campaigns for high school across North America.

The Obamas are rubbing with celebrities all over the place. First Lady Michelle Obama is set to appear in an upcoming episode of the kid’s show “iCarly”. She won’t be singing, though.

Check out Obama “singing” in this video below.

New Lady Gaga Album On The Way

Posted by andPOP Staff on January 6th, 2012

2012 is going to be a big year for Lady Gaga. She explained in a recent interview that she is heading back on the road, and will also be releasing a new album (and kind of becoming a Mom).

Gaga told MTV, “I just want to keep going. I’m not as goal-obsessed as I am process-obsessed. I just want to keep writing music. I’m looking forward to putting out another album and going on tour.”

Gaga also talked about becoming a Mom one day.

“Someday, a long long day from now. Not soon. My next baby will be my new record.”

So in 2012, Gaga will become a Mom – a Mom to her new record.

Rihanna: The Singer, The Fashion Icon, The Accessory

Posted by @coltondaniel on January 5th, 2012

Even since repeatedly pestering that poor DJ to  turn the record up in 2005, Robyn Rihanna Fenty has been a chart-topping powerhouse representative of Def Jam Records. With her collaborations dominating the charts as of late, it seems that the recipe to Billboard success is a Rihanna hook. After all, she has the most digital number-one hits with eleven and counting.

That’s more number-one’s than Stevie Wonder or Janet Jackson. That’s two away from Michael Jackson and nine away from the untouchable Beatles. Are we talking quantity, not quality? It’s up for debate. How does she compare to the Gaga’s, Perry’s and Beyonce’s?

Turn on the radio. Open a music magazine. And if they’re on a break from their teen-preganancy programming, watch MTV. From Maroon 5 to Eminem to Coldplay to Lonely Island, there is that familiar sultry croon of the official ambassador of youth and culture for Barbados. She is considerably the most-featured female singer of this millennium. She’s no Fitzgerald, or Goulding for that matter, but it’s either she has a remarkable talent or impeccable timing. OK, maybe Jay-Z has a little something to do with it.

Going back to 2008, she was featured on two of the biggest songs of the year: Maroon5′s  “If I Ever See Your Face Again” and T.I.’s redemption-song  “Live Your Life.” Two opposing ends of the musical spectrum that equally delivered as hits in their respective genres.

Recently, her collaborations haven’t slowed down, they’ve been unescapable on the pop-charts. She duels with Nicki Minaj, harmonizes on Kanye’s  “All of the Lights”and even trades verses with Chris Martin in Coldplay’s  “Princess of China” In response to his appearance on  “What’s My Name?”, Rihanna flourishes in the role of a wounded-love on the  title track of Drake’s upcoming Take Care EP.

Her solo success should not be ignored. In Billboard’s 53-year-history, Rihanna is in a third-place tie with the legendary Whitney Houston for most chart-toppers, behind Mariah Carey and Madonna. That’s a fine line between jaw-dropping and head-scratching. She was also named Digital Song Artist of the Decade in 2009, passing Mr. West, Beyonce and Taylor Swift.

In a recent study, the most popular videos on YouTube are unsurprisingly, music videos that occupy an incredible 86% of the top 60 most-viewed. What’s even more mind-boggling is that a trifecta of pop-artists total a 25% of those 60 videos: Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Rihanna. Bieber impregnates the rest of the pack with 1.664 billion views. Mother Monster rolls in with 842 million views and Rihanna clocks in with 715 million views.

With her new album Talk That Talk on the horizon (due out November 21), critical pop-singles are expected to stampede the airwaves. She took to Twitter on Tuesday to confirm that her mentor would appear on the title track: “Yes sir! Jigga man is on the title track #TTT.” What a clubhouse that must be, with Kanye and Jay meeting their female counterparts of Beyonce and Rihanna for an afternoon picnic.

Hova and Ri-Ri previously collaborated on her mega-hit “Umbrella” and he featured her on that Blueprint 3 power-house single, “Run This Town.”

She’s definitely beating Chris Brown’s success to death.

Lady Gaga Involved in Dumb Lawsuit

Posted by andPOP Staff on December 25th, 2011

This must be one of the dumbest lawsuits of all time. Lady Gaga’s former assistant Jennifer O’Neill says she is owed $380,000 in overtime after serving the pop star for 13 months, and she is suing to claim it, reports TMZ.

So why is O’Neill pissed?  She says that she was a slave to Gaga. O’Neill says in her suit her job included “ensuring the promptness of a towel following a shower and serving as a personal alarm clock to keep [Gaga] on schedule.”

And, O’Neill says, she was required to be at Gaga’s beck and call at her “earliest waking hour.”

O’Neill is suing for the $380k — which represents 7,168 hours of overtime during the 13 months.

O’Neill is suing Mermaid Touring Company which is the touring company Gaga uses.

This lawsuit sounds pretty stupid. Jennifer is suing because she was asked to do the job she hired for. Fetching towels and making sure sh*t is on schedule is part of being an assistant.

Are we wrong? Isn’t that what a celebrity assistant is supposed to do?

Lady Gaga Will Give Fans a New Song on Christmas Day

Posted by Natalia Buia on December 23rd, 2011

Lady Gaga doesn’t look a thing like Santa (yet) but she sure has the same gift-giving attitude as the jolly ol’ man.

According to MTV News, on Christmas Day, Gaga promises to leak a new song of hers to all her fans a.k.a. “little monsters”.

The “Born This Way” singer is currently on tour in Japan where she will be celebrating Christmas, but with her laptop in tow, she won’t miss the opportunity to connect with her loyal fans on December 25.

Lady Gaga wrote on her Twitter page last night, “On Christmas Day I will leak to you an unreleased song off “Born This Way”! It was recorded live, in one take, on the tour bus. Uncensored.”

So, while you’ll be unwrapping presents with your family on Christmas Day, something new and spectacular from your favourite artist will be playing in the background.

Adele: Billboard and Rolling Stone’s Artist of the Year

Posted by @coltondaniel on December 11th, 2011

Adele continues to roll in the praise by making Billboard history as the first female singer to top the artist, album and singles list in the same year.

The 23-year-old  Brit beat out Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga in the American magazine’s prestigious Best Artist and No.1 Billboard 200 Album (with ’21′). She fought off the likes of LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem and Katy Perry’s Firework to become top single with ‘Rolling in the Deep’. Although, it’s really a no-brainer.

Tye Corner, editor over at Billboard.com, said that “her success is really inspiring because it shows that there is still room in the music industry for an artist to make it with true, raw talent.

“It’s not necessarily always about the outrageous outfits or flashy videos, but an amazing voice coupled with the right song still has the ability to turn the ears of millions of people and keep them interested.”

It’s been quite the week for her already as she was nominated for six Grammy awards and tweeted to assure her fans that she made it through her vocal-surgery.

Also Rolling Stone, the granddaddy of all music magazines, named ’21′ the Best Album of the Year and her soulful breakup scorcher made the Best Single of the Year also. It’s nice to see an honest and refreshing ballad recognized amongst the Gaga’s and the Perry’s of female pop.

Her smug graces the cover of Billboard’s latest issue and it includes an interview with the soulful singer. She answers the question that everybody wants to know, what she feels about finding love again:

“Not having someone to share all this with made me miserable at times, to be honest. I wanted nothing more than to be in love and be loved back. That was until I remembered I was sharing it with millions and millions and millions of people! I haven’t been ready to be in love again since summer 2009 … until now. And I hadn’t met anyone along the way who’s changed that.”

She also shared some details on her next album:

“I’m really looking forward to some time to do nothing. I imagine I’ll be 25 or 26 by the time my next record comes out, as I haven’t even thought about my third record yet. I’m just gonna lay some concrete, set up home and just ‘be’ for a bit. I’ll disappear and come back with a record when it’s good enough. There will be no new music until it’s good enough and until I’m ready.”

Watch Lady Gaga’s New Music Video ‘Marry the Night’

Posted by Natalia Buia on December 1st, 2011

If you’re like me, you probably watch a Lady Gaga music video and think to yourself “wow, how can she top that?!”

With such a creative mind and relentlessly artistic spirit, Lady Gaga is always one-upping her previous video endeavour. They’re more than a typical 3 minute long video. They are captivating short films with an incredible soundtrack. Sometimes, they’re so stunning it can make those little hairs behind your neck stand up.

“Marry the Night” behinds with Lady Gaga being strolled into a hospital room. She looks pale, thin and scared to die. “I’m going to be a star!” her character says, as if it’s her dying wish.

The 13 minute long opus then goes to a flashback (or so we’re made to believe) of Lady Gaga’s character in two scenerios: as a successful and graceful ballerina, and as a hungry, delusional artist covered in nothing but Cheerios. Hey, they are part of a nutritious breakfast, whether you eat them or wear them.

“You may say I lost everything, but I still had my BeDazzeler,” she narrates, as she is seen dancing around cars in flames. A viewer like would assume this is her character’s “low point”. She laments the time she was a dancer in her prime.

Of course, no music video would be complete without Lady Gaga’s side boob. There’s plenty of shots of the singer naked in the bathtub. Guess she has to get a man’s attention somehow.

For her first time directing a music video, Lady Gaga gets points for being ambitious (when is she not?) however, the storyline could have been a little more cohesive. Fortunately, the killer dance sequences make up for it.

So, kids, make some popcorn and gather around and watch as Lady Gaga marries the night.

Lady Gaga Teams Up With Sugarland at Grammy Concert

Posted by Natalia Buia on December 1st, 2011

The outrageous pop singer joined forces with acclaimed country band Sugarland last night.

Gaga had the opportunity to open and close the Grammy Awards nominations concert, held at the Nokia Theatre in L.A.

The singer sat by the piano, in her typically dark clothes and makeup as the more laid band country duo, Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush, played guitar. The three artists on stage sang Gaga’s “You and I”, which already has a bit of country twang to it.

Half way through the song, Gaga yelled “everybody put your drinks up!” to liven up the crowd. Lead singer of Sugarland, Jennifer Nettles looked really happy to be collaborating with an artist so opposite of her. As much as pop suits this mother monster, Lady Gaga could totally have a seperare career in country music if she really wanted to. Trust.

Check out their performance below.

Lady Gaga on the Cover of ‘Vanity Fair’

Posted by Natalia Buia on November 29th, 2011

Lady Gaga is a lady in red as she graces the January cover of Vanity Fair.

After a whirlwind year of stunning performances and well-deserves awards, Lady Gaga chats with the magazine and reflects on her personal life, as Just Jarred reports.

The pop phenomenon says her fans help her get through tough relationships.

“When I fight with someone I’m in a relationship with, I think, What would my fans think if they knew this was happening? How would they feel about my work and about me as a female if they knew I was allowing this to go on?” she says.

Gaga also admits she gets a ton of proposals from past ex-boyfriends now that she’s famous. She says putting a ring on it, isn’t her goal.

“How f—in’ romantic, you a–hole. Sure, pop a ring on my finger and make it all better. I can buy myself a f—in’ ring.”

You got to love Gaga for always speaking her mind. She can be quite a role model when it comes to female empowerment and independence, a trait she doesn’t seem to get a lot of credit for these days.

The January edition of Vanity Fair hits newsstands December 6.

Justin Bieber is Bing’s Most Searched Celebrity of 2011

Posted by Natalia Buia on November 28th, 2011

Although December hasn’t arrived, the search engine Bing (for those of you who don’t use Google) has unveiled it’s most searched celebrities of the year.

2011 was definitely the year of Bieber Fever as Justin comes in as the most searched person. Bing reports Kim Kardashian, who came in first last year, has now fallen in the number two spot. Jennifer Anniston is the third most searched celebrity this year.

Here is the full list from Bing:

1. Justin Bieber

2. Kim Kardashian

3. Jennifer Aniston

4. Lindsay Lohan

5. Jennifer Lopez

6. Britney Spears

7. Katy Perry

8. Megan Fox

9. Lady Gaga

10. Miley Cyrus

Having Lady Gaga on the bottom of the list is a little bit absurd. She’s had a stellar year of performances, controversies and awards. I expected her to reign at least higher than Megan Fox of all people.

It’s a bit surprising to see Jennifer Anniston beat out so many troubled headline-makers like Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears. But, I assume people were constantly curious of who Ms. Ex-Brad Pitt was dating next.

Justin Bieber appears the only male celeb on the list, while his girlfriend Selena Gomez is no where near.
