Joss Stone Cast In ‘The Tudors’

Joss Stone is adding to her acting resume with a role as Anne of Cleves in “The Tudors.”

The 21-year-old British soul singer will portray the fourth wife of Henry VIII, played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, in the racy drama’s upcoming third season.

The Irish-Canadian-U.S. co-production airs on CBC-TV in Canada.

The third season will follow Henry as he weds his third wife Jane Seymour (played by Icelandic actress Anita Briem), before moving on to Anne, the daughter of a German nobleman.

Stone’s stint on the show is not expected to be long, as the fickle king had his marriage to Anne annulled soon after the wedding.

Although the role marks Stone’s TV acting debut, she appeared in an 2005 episode of “American Dreams” as “Singer In The Lair,” performing her hit single “Right to be Wrong,” and had a role in the 2006 fantasy film “Eragon.”

She will return to the big screen in September in the comedy “Snappers,” for which she also produced the score.

The Grammy-winning Stone released her third studio album, “Introducing Joss Stone,” in March 2007.

Stone Lands A Surprise Grammy

JOSS STONE was presented with a surprise Grammy Award when she joined Quincy Jones to announce the venue for the 50th Grammys in 2008.

The British singer thought she was asked to attend the big publicity event in Los Angeles last week to simply announce the fact that next year’s ceremony would be held at the city’s Staples Center, but she was in for a big shock.

She says, “I got a Grammy and it wasn’t even the Grammys… It was for the Sly & The Family Stone tribute (album). I just sang a hook… and that was it. (But) thank you very much, lovely jubbly.”

Stars Help New Orleans Revival

JOSS STONE, JOHN LEGEND and HARRY CONNICK JR have given a supportive hand to the rejuvenation of grief-stricken New Orleans, Louisiana, following 2005’s Hurricane Katrina.

The musicians – who were in the American city to perform at its Jazz Festival – have taken time off from performing to aid in the area’s rebuilding.

Legend and Connick Jr kicked off the proceedings on Sunday by washing clothes at a laundromat and painting a house respectively.

Meanwhile, Stone spent yesterday promoting voluntary work.

Dreamgirls star Danny Glover and Democrat politician John Edwards also helped out in the Southern city.

Stone Not A Fan Of ‘Cheesy’ American Idol

Don’t expect to see soul singer JOSS STONE as a guest judge on AMERICAN IDOL anytime soon – she thinks the talent show is past its prime.

The Brit, who was discovered on UK talent show STAR FOR A NIGHT, admits she was a big fan of the first season of Idol, but the programme no longer appeals to her.

She says, “I think if you keep going with it, it’s gonna get more and more cheesy… and that’s a shame for the artists, because they just want any break.”

Stone also questions the credentials of the show’s judges and believes they’re too mean.

She adds, “There’s some great people there, like RANDY (JACKSON)… He has every right to judge them. But the rest of them… why are you judging these people?”

Ronson Slams ‘Annoying’ Stone

Super producer MARK RONSON has dubbed singer JOSS STONE “really annoying” after she wrote a 7,000 word thank you list in the sleeve notes for her new album.

Ronson – who has worked with AMY WINEHOUSE and LILY ALLEN – was left stunned by Stone’s gushing credit list.

He says, “Those Joss Stone sleeve notes, man. I’ve been around white singers who’ve been told they’re soulful since a young age and they feel they have carte blanche to be ‘I’m a down groovy soul chick’ – this really annoying attitude that permeates everything.

“Part of me thinks, ‘Well, she’s 19, I did so many stupid things when I was 19,’ but she’s being rammed down my throat, so I’m allowed to have an opinion.”

Joss Stone Is Dating Raphael Saadiq

Teenage singer JOSS STONE is dating music producer RAPHAEL SAADIQ, her close friend R&B star LEMAR has confirmed.

The 19-year-old and her publicists have tried to hide her romance with 40-year-old Saadiq, who played bass on her latest album.

She recently said, “He is from Oakland, I’m from Devon, England; he is 40, I am 19; he is American, I’m English. It’s, like, two completely different people.”

But Lemar insists Stone has confessed the truth to him. He says, “I’ve known about their relationship for ages. Joss is always texting me about how happy she is. And it’s the real deal.

“I’m happy for her. She’s a great girl, and she’s really into him.

“She’s doing really well in the States right now so it’s nice that she is settling down too.”

Joss Stone Previews New Album at Surprise Toronto Performance

Apparently, Joss Stone went through a bad breakup. A horrible breakup. So bad, several of her songs on her upcoming third album are devoted to either the breakup, dealing with breakup, or moving on. One is even called “I Wish I Never Met You.” The message couldn’t be clearer.

Stone previewed material from her upcoming album – “Introducing Joss Stone,” due out March 20 – on Saturday night at the Docks in Toronto. It was a last-minute “surprise” gig, having been announced quietly just 24 hours before, and the half-filled venue was proof of that. Stone performed, barefoot of course, in front of an eight-piece band and three backup singers.

The concert was the first time an audience has heard the new material, and was held just days before similar preview performances in New York and Los Angeles – both concerts are sold out.

She’s 19 now, turning 20 in April, and more than three years have passed since I interviewed her before she released her debut album. The Joss Stone I spoke with in 2003 is not the same Joss Stone who performed on Saturday.

First of all, she looks much different. She died her hair a dark, pulsating shade of red and looks like a woman, not a 16-year-old girl.

She was confident. She wasn’t immersed in hype. The hype proved to be true and the hype is long gone. She’s a three-time Grammy nominated artist and she knows it. She owned the stage. She wasn’t afraid to dance. She wasn’t afraid to swear.

And this is her music now, the reason for the album title. Her debut album was a collection of cover songs, the sophomore release was largely written by other people, but this album was written by her and produced by Raphael Saadiq, who she hand picked (and who played guitar in her band on Saturday). The sound is not very different than her previous albums (the same combination of soul and R&B with a little more of an urban feel), though it’s tough to tell what the album will sound like exactly, having only heard the material live. The recorded versions, fully produced, may have a much different sound that the live versions.

One standout song is dedicated to music, she explained. She told the audience how music saved her life and expressed how she might get so emotional while performing it that it would be best to ignore her if she loses her composure. The recorded track will have an appearance from Lauryn Hill.

Perhaps it’s a blessing, but Stone isn’t yet associated with a hit. She has released a few singles over the past few years, but none were smash hits and it wasn’t obvious yesterday if she has any massive hits on the album. The only thing that remained obvious was that her booming voice is second to none.

Mayer, Joss Stone Join Herbie Hancock on Latest Album

Jazz legend Herbie Hancock has collaborated with some of the biggest names in music on a new album, “Possibilities.”

The artists were required to join Hancock in studio, not phone in their contributions, as some artists now do.

Joining him on the album are: John Mayer, Sting, Annie Lennox, Christina Aguilera, Paul Simon, Carlos Santana, Trey Anastasio, Damien Rice, Joss Stone and Raul Midon.

“I was trying to make something truly collaborative,” Hancock said in a press release.

“‘Possibilities’ is not just the result of interacting with the artists on a musical level, but on a life level. For example, during the Annie Lennox sessions, we talked for a couple of hours before we even played a note. We talked about everything from politics to humanism to religion, all sorts of things. And saw eye to eye on very much of it, especially on social issues. This was the kind of thing I wanted to air out so that when we finally sat down to make music there was a common ground on which we as people felt connected.”

Some artists redid classic songs, while others, like John Mayer, created new music with Hancock.

The album will be released August 30.

Music Superstars Fall Into The Gap

Clothing retailer Gap Inc. has rounded up a string of big-name celebrities to command a mega marketing campaign this fall. Starting in September, star singers including Alanis Morissette, Keith Urban, and Michelle Williams will be urging you to fall into the Gap when they appear in the company?s ?Favourites? advertising campaign.

For this promotion, what?s old is new again: the Gap?s new TV ads will feature each artist performing a cover of a favourite song. Of course, each singer will also be modelling a pair of Gap jeans at the same time.

Morissette will cover Seal?s ?Crazy? while fellow pop-rock chicks Liz Phair and Joss Stone, will take on Irving Berlin’s “Check to Cheek” and the Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows,” respectively.

Meanwhile, country superstar Urban will give his version of Billy Thorpe’s “Most People I Know Think I’m Crazy,” and Williams, of Destiny?s Child fame, will sing the Al Green classic “Let’s Stay Together.” This year?s breakout R&B sensation John Legend will be doing the Isley Brothers’ “Hello It’s Me,” while singer-songwriter Jason Mraz tackles Bob Marley’s “One Love.” Finally, Incubus’ Brandon Boyd will channel Elvis Costello with his hit, “Alison.”

From September 1 to 17, fans who want to hear more of the performances can pick up a special eight-track CD available at Gap stores and Gap.com. Each of the songs, along with a director’s cut of the commercial and behind-the-scenes footage, will be distributed as a free gift to customers making purchases of $60 or more, while supplies last.

This promotion will be an appropriate tie-in to another Gap marketing campaign that partners up the fashion giant with Apple iTunes next month. From August 8 to 31, a simple trip to a Gap fitting room will score customers free music. All Gap wants you to do is to try on any pair of its new jean fits and you?ll score a complimentary song from Apple?s iTunes music store.
