Posted on andPOP:

The infamous red and black leather jacket Michael Jackson wore in his ‘Thriller’ video is being auctioned, reports CTV.

The auction administrator, Darren Julien, says the jacket is “the most recognized and significant piece of pop culture” to come up for sale and expects the jacket will get at least $200,000.

The jacket is even autographed, as Jackson signed the jacket as a gift to his longtime costume designers, Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush.

The jacket will be fought over at the ‘Music Icons’ auction on June 25 and 26 at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills.

Other Jackson items up for sale include the wig he wore when he announced his ‘This Is It’ tour in London, a fedora and sparkled glove he wore on stage, his shirt from the ‘Scream’ video and a beaten mailbox from the Carolwood Drive estate where Jackson died in 2009.

The auction will also include one of Eric Clapton’s guitars, Frank Sinatra’s 1986 Jaguar, handwritten lyrics and a leather jacket from Johnny Cash, and a signed harmonica from Bob Dylan, among others.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Shambala Preserve.

These are definitely pieces of history, so if you’ve got some cash to spare, head on over and bid. I think a sequinned glove is a great investment.

Cash died in 2003 at the age of 71, four months after his wife, June Carter Cash, passed away.

American VI: Ain’t No Grave is being produced by Rick Rubin, who was behind Cash’s other posthumous release, American V: A Hundred Highways, released July 22, 2006. The album will feature one of the last songs the singer ever wrote, I Corinthians: 15:55.

The album also features Cash covering Sheryl Crow’s “Redemption Day,” Kris Kristofferson’s “For the Good Times,” and Tom Paxton’s “Can’t Help But Wonder Where I’m Bound.”

Rubin and Cash worked together on the American Recordings series since 1994. These albums won Cash six Grammy awards and introduced him to a new generation.

“Johnny said that recording was his main reason for being alive,” said Rubin, noting that Cash did not allow poor health to deter him from working in his final months. “I think it was the only thing that kept him going.”

Posted on andPOP:

Hip-hop and dance music meet country on the upcoming compilation “Johnny Cash Remixed.”

The album, executive produced by the late country legend’s son, features such contemporary artists as Snoop Dogg putting their own spin on recordings licensed from Cash’s first label, Sun Records.

Snoop, who is also an executive producer on the album, remixes the 1956 hit “I Walk The Line” via QDT, a new production team the rapper has formed with Teddy Riley and DJ Quik.

Other remixes include “Folsom Prison Blues” by Pete Rock, “Get Rhythm” by Philip Steir and “Leave That Junk Alone” by Alabama 3, creators of the theme from “The Sopranos.”

“[Johnny Cash] would have loved this remix record,” son John Carter Cash, who also produced the 2005 Cash biopic “Walk The Line,” said in a statement.

“While it stays true to the original recordings, this CD touches on undiscovered ground. This is what my father was about: staying true to tradition while creating groundbreaking new music.”

The album will be released in stores and online on Oct. 14, while a deluxe vinyl edition will be available in select independent record stores on Sept. 23.

A documentary about the making of “Remixed” is also in production.

Posted on andPOP:

In a fittingly patriotic move, a new Johnny Cash album will be released on July 4. “American V: A Hundred Highways” is the last official installment in Cash’s acclaimed “American Recordings” series.

The album features twelve tracks from the influential country artist’s final recording sessions in 2003. As with prior releases in the “American” series, the record is produced by Rick Rubin.

“These songs are Johnny’s final statement,” said Rubin in a previous statement from Lost Highway Records. “They are the truest reflection of the music that was central to his life at the time. This is the music that Johnny wanted us to hear.”

The album will include “Like the 309,” the final original song recorded by Cash.

Here’s the record’s full track-listing, according to the Lost Highway website:

1. Help Me
2. God’s Gonna Cut You Down
3. Like the 309
4. If You Could Read My Mind
5. Further on up the Road
6. The Evening Train
7. I Came to Believe
8. Love’s Been Good to Me
9. A Legend in My Time
10. Rose of My Heart
11. Four Strong Winds
12. I’m Free From the Chain Gang Now

Posted on andPOP:

U2, Foo Fighters, Norah Jones and Jerry Lee Lewis are among the stars who will perform at ?I Walk the Line: A Night for Johnny Cash.?

The CBS special is scheduled to air Nov. 16, two days before the Joaquin Phoenix-starring Cash biopic ?Walk the Line? hits theatres, reports Billboard.

Other acts set to put their own spin on songs by the country music legend include Sheryl Crow, Alison Krauss, Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, Kid Rock, Martina McBride and Brad Paisley.

Shooter Jennings, who portrays his late father Waylon in “Walk the Line,” will also perform.

Introducing the performances will be Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon (who portrays June Carter Cash in the 20th Century Fox film) and Dennis Quaid.

Quaid himself once starred in another biopic about a legendary musician, playing Lewis in the 1989 movie ?Great Balls of Fire.?

The special will feature clips from ?Walk the Line,? video highlights from Cash?s illustrious career and, of course, a lot of Cash music. In a CBS Television press release, show producers say viewers can look forward to performances of songs including “I Walk the Line,” “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” “I Still Miss Someone,” “Folsom Prison Blues” and the Johnny Cash/June Carter duet “Jackson.”

The one-hour special will air Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. (EST) on CBS, the night after the CMA Awards, also on CBS.

CBS aired a similar tribute to Ray Charles shortly before ?Ray? hit theatres last year.

The soundtrack for ?Walk the Line? is due Nov. 15 via Wind-Up and features singing from Phoenix and Witherspoon, as well as tracks by Jennings, Johnathan Rice, Waylon Payne and Tyler Hilton.
