It is still unsure who is to blame for John Ritter’s untimely death but the onus does not lie on his doctors, a jury has ruled.

A wrongful death claim made by the Ritter family was rejected Friday by a 9-3 split verdict in a civil trial in Glendale, California. After weeks of testimonies and deliberations, the jury cleared the doctors of any foul play.

The actor’s widow Amy Yasbeck and his four children launched the $67 million lawsuit against radiologist, Dr. Matthew Lotysch, accusing him of negligence in a body scan he performed on Ritter in 2001. The suit also accused cardiologist, Dr. Joseph Lee, of providing negligent care on the night Ritter died in 2003.

“We are still convinced these doctors did something inappropriate, but the jury system worked,” said an attorney for the Ritters, according to E! Online.

Ritter (Three’s Company, 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter) died at age 54 of a torn aorta in Burbank, California, on Sept. 11, 2003.
