Lions and tigers and spoilers. Oh my!

We announced that the Wizard of Oz prequel was in the works about a year ago. Oz The Great and Powerful is a Sam Raimi (Spiderman) directed story of how the wizard ruled the kingdom. But this week, some details about the film finally surfaced thanks to blabbering youngsters Abigail Spencer and Joey King.

“We’re doing the same thing as the first Wizard of Oz, we’re making it black and white in the beginning and then (it gets) colorful when we enter the Land of Oz,” she said in an interview with TeenSpot. “It’s also going to be a 3D movie; I’m so excited about that. It’s going to add a whole new level to the awesomeness of Oz.”

“It’s before the Scarecrow and the Tin Man and Dorothy and all that,” says Spencer who plays the Wizard’s assistant May in an interview with E! ”It really goes deeper into how that story came to be.

Rather than James Franco, Michelle Williams or Mila Kunis belting out ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ like the Judy Garland-starring original it is based more upon the books, according to Spencer.

“This is the real story and I think this is actually what the writer [L. Frank Baum] intended when he wrote them.”

Oz is set for release on March 8 of next year.

James Franco Could Be A Pick-Up Artist Guru In ‘The Game’

James Franco is in talks to star in “The Game,” a MGM adaptation based upon Neil Strauss’ New York Times bestseller about picking up women.

According to THR, the actor-author-writer-director-unsatisfied Oscar host-student-man about town-seeker-performance artist-soap star is in the early stages of negotiations of Strauss’ “part memoir, part how-to guide” of how to get laid. He would be taking on the role of Mystery, whom you might remember from having his own VH1 reality show apply named The Pick Up Artist. That’s the show in which he taught clueless schlubs how to cast their lines out and reel in the ladies.

As we reported, he’s also in talks to play Hugh Hefnor and is set to play himself in The Apocalypse, the directorial debut of Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg which shoots this spring.

James Franco To Play Hugh Hefner In Biopic?

James Franco is rumoured to be playing Hugh Hefner in the upcoming Linda Lovelace biopic, “Lovelace”.

Variety has reported that Franco is in the final stages of making an appearance in the film, which stars Amanda Seyfrield as Lovelace. It would reunite the Oscar nominee with his ‘Howl’ directors, Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman.

It’s described to be set “between the birth of the sexual revolution and the culmination of the feminist movement” where the life of Linda Boreman (Lovelace) becomes the world’ first erotic superstar due to the success of “Deep Throat”. It was one of the earliest pornographic films that featured a plot-line that achieved massive mainstream attention.

Hank Azaria plays Jerry Damiano, the writer/director of ‘Deep Throat’ that discovers Lovelace after her husband (Peter Saarsgard) shows him a home movie of her special skill. In fact, Franco was initially in talks to play that role. The cast also features Sharon Stone as Lovelace’s mother and it all began shooting this week in Los Angeles.

“It’s going to be really hard and kind of terrifying at the same time,” Seyfried was saying about her role, which was initially attached to Lindsay Lohan and then Olivia Wilde. “It’s something completely different. I do have some liberties there but I am playing someone that existed in history and had quite an established reputation for something very extreme.”

As for Franco, he’s expected to be on set for a single day as his screen time as Hefner is limited to scenes in which “the magazine mogul welcomes Linda and Chuck to the Playboy Mansion for a screening of “Deep Throat” and has a heart-to-heart with Linda about her future”.

Franco’s most recent blockbuster “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” is now available and he is currently wrapping up his lead-role in Sam Raimi’s “Oz: The Great And Powerful.”

While I’m happy for the single Bradley Cooper who can now use this title to pick up chicks, I’m a bit disappointed People Magazine shunned a few of my favourite male celebrities from the number one spot.

No More Amateur Porn for James Franco

James Franco was on Conan last night where he spoke about starting his acting career. Part of that beginning included some amateur porn.

Well amateur porn as far as making a video with a girlfriend. “When I was young, it’s not like I went down to Van Nuys and tried to break into the porn industry, I got a video camera and my girlfriend and I decided to film ourselves,” he laughed. “And watched it back and said yeah, let’s never watch that again.”

However, his next flick does have a porn connection. He’ll take on a leading role, alongside Heather Graham, in Cherry, playing a drug addict lawyer who becomes involved with a young, naive porn star.

Heartthrob James Franco is single again after breaking up with his girlfriend Ahna O’Reilly.

Franco told Playboy in their August 2011 issue that his strenuous schedule and distance was the reason for the break up.

“It’s over… We’d been living together in L.A. and then came to New York to go school for two years. Then I signed up for more school at Yale. I think that was it for her.”

That’s a sad situation. The only reason why the couple broke up was because of his love of education. Well if there are any female academics near Yale, this might be your lucky day.

Anne Hathaway Graces the cover of Harper’s Bazaar

Anyone who disses Anne Hathaway on national TV may end up being shot back at in a series of emails.

Well in the case of James Franco, that’s what happened to him when he poked fun at her during an appearance on “The Late Show With David Letterman.”

“I love her, but Anne Hathaway is so energetic, I think the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned standing next to Anne Hathaway,” Franco said back in March.

Hathaway, who hosted this year’s Academy Awards with Franco to less than rave reviews, fired back, correcting Franco on his word choice.

“I let James know that a whirling dervish is a more flattering comparison than a Tasmanian devil. I called him, and we e-mailed a bit,” she reveals to Harper’s Bazaar.

…Ouch…

But perhaps there aren’t any hard feelings, as Hathaway felt hosting the awards show was more of a positive experience in just getting to be there.

“In the grand scheme of things, I got to have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she tells Harper’s. “I met great people, wore beautiful clothes. And I got to put on a show. I don’t see a downside. Anyone who disliked my personality probably disliked my personality before the Oscars.”

Good on Anne for not firing back angrily to her haters. After all, she was the center of attention that night, not to mention all the lovely outfits she got to wear! Stay classy! It really is better to focus on the positive and move on in life.

But in other Anne Hathaway news, she is gearing up to play Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s Batman finale, “The Dark Knight Rises” as well as the summer romance, “One Day”, alongside Jim Sturgess.

Fashion Minute: Emma Watson On ‘Vogue’ Cover

Well, if that isn’t a cover, I don’t know what is.

Emma Watson looks stunning on Vogue’s July cover next month. She’s one of the few that can pull off the short hair look, and is definitely rocking it here. It’s a fresh change from Vogue’s usual boring covers – it’s risky, it’s eye-catching, and it’s unique.

In the magazine, the actress reveals that James Franco and Daniel Radcliffe have both been huge supporters in times of trouble.

Franco was apparently a huge help on how to get an education while maintaing a career as an actor.

“It was such a relief to speak to someone who is trying to do the same thing I’m doing,” she told the magazine. “I talked to him about juggling studying and making films and going backward and forward. He’s not afraid or limited by what he fears people will say about it.”

Meanwhile, Radcliffe was apparently playing Cupid to her recent flames.

“We would help each other with relationship advice,” Radcliffe says. “Particularly funny were the moments when we would help each other compose texts to the most recent flames in either of our lives (not too flirty, but not too subtle either!).”

“It was certainly a case of the blind leading the blind, but it was extremely funny.”

Watson is a true class act, and she looks gorgeous here. Well done, Vogue.

Josh Duhamel To Return To ‘All My Children’

Josh Duhamel is set to return to ‘All My Children,’ reports CTV.

The actor will reportedly reprise his role as evil conman Leo du Pres, who was presumed dead in a waterfall accident in 2002.

Duhamel will return for a cameo for at least one episode in the long-running soap opera.

The show’s executive producer Julie Carruthers says: “Everyone at ‘All My Children’ is thrilled and excited to welcome Josh back to Pine Valley. The appearance of Leo is sure to be one the highlights of the season.”

During his three years at the show, Duhamel won four Daytime Emmy nominations and Best Supporting Actor in 2002.

Duhamel isn’t the first actor to return to the soap opera that made him famous. James Franco also recently returned to ‘General Hospital’ for a guest stint. My question is, why do these actors feel they have to degrade themselves to returning to soap operas? They have a career now! Maybe it’s just for nostalgia.

Val Lauren Takes the Lead in James Franco’s Upcoming Biopic

Actor Val Lauren has been cast as the lead role of Sal Mineo in James Franco’s upcoming film, Sal.

Adapted by Franco from Mineo’s biography written by Michael Gregg Michaud entitled Sal Mineo: A Biography, the biopic is centered around the story of Oscar-nominee Sal Mineo, who starred alongside James Dean in the movie, Rebel Without a Cause and was murdered in West Hollywood at the young age of 37. Mineo was recognized for his “subtle portrayal of a homosexual character,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Filming is set to begin this summer in Los Angeles.

“Sal Mineo himself was an extraordinary and super complex guy,” Lauren told The Hollywood Reporter. “People know him for Rebel Without a Cause, but he was technically the first actor who came out of the closet. He was very brave.”

Although slightly unknown as an actor, Lauren starred in the independent film Dallas 362 in 2003, and wrote, directed, and produced his own short film entitled Help. As well, he is set to appear in the season finale of Hawaii Five-O on May 16.

Franco is set to direct the movie, meaning that what we can expect from the finished product is none other than perfection. We can’t wait to see what comes out of this project by an extremely talented person.

James Franco To Direct Theater

James Franco certainly is a man of many talents.

This time around, Franco is making his debut as a dance theater director for the upcoming multimedia show ‘Collage,’ reports CNN. First he’s an actor, then Ivy League student, then Oscars host, and now theater director? Impressive!

“‘Collage’ is a mixed-media piece that uses sound and visuals to play with the idea of how different art mediums interact,” producer John Morrow says of the show, which will run at the Stella Adler studios in NYC from May 8 -15. “Using video, dance, poetry, theater and music, we have created a performance that will be an engaging experience for the audience.”

“The piece is so exhilarating because there are no boundaries to what we can create and play with,” says actress Nina Ljeti.

Adds choreographer Chloe Kernaghan, “The overall piece has been a continuous exploration of how using disparate elements can create a cohesive idea.”

Franco will appear live at each performance to narrate the production. This also isn’t the first time Franco has produced a musical number. He recently put on ‘James Franco Presents’ at Yale University, so he has the experience.

Bravo to him. If you have the power to explore different realms, then by all means do it. He’s talented at pretty much everything he does, so I’m sure the play will be a success.

James Franco’s Twitter Account Shut Down

Poor guy, 2011 has not been going so well.

Oscar-nominated actor, James Franco, has not been having a lot of luck in the headlines these past few months. The on-screen star, who will turn 33 later this month, has already been critiqued by every man, woman and child for his “stoned” performance hosting this year’s Academy Awards alongside overly-peppy co-host, Anne Hathaway.

The New York University student sparked more controversy this past Thursday, when he tweeted a photo of himself standing, arms-crossed in the centre of group of some very naked women. The shot, was reportedly a part of an upcoming short film by Kids writer, Harmony Korine.

Just a day later Franco told Politico that “Social media is over. My thought was ‘this is my Twitter. I can do whatever I want.’ But certain companies I work with contacted me about what I was saying.”

Yesterday, Gawker reported that Franco’s Twitter was officially shut down.

I’m not sure how much the world is missing without the tweets of Franco here, (although his freak-outs are, indeed, quite entertaining,) but am certainly outraged at the idea of him being shut down. If, in fact, the disappearance of his account is due to the demands of “certain companies,” then Twitter will be the easiest target for the onslaught of unhappy Franco-followers.

In fact, the larger picture is that perhaps Franco is right. If in this day and age your Twitter feed isn’t your own, what is? Obviously celebrities under contractual obligations play by different rules, but you’d think promoting an upcoming project would be acceptable.

Social media isn’t over, but unfortunately, maybe Franco’s time as a trending topic is.

James Franco Responds to Oscar Criticism

We’ve all heard what Twitter, Facebook and essentially every other news source has had to say about James Franco’s hosting duties at this year’s Oscar ceremonies.

Everyone thought he had pulled a Pineapple Express. Was he stoned?

This Friday on CBS’s Late Night with David Letterman, we’ll hear what Franco himself has to say.

Letterman, 63, received some heavy criticism after his 1995 Oscar appearance also.

“I was so bad that they talked for a while about shutting down the motion picture industry. … I was God awful,” recalls Letterman. However, 32-year-old Franco one-uped the late-night King by arguing that nobody accused him of being on drugs.

“They didn’t say you were stoned,” Franco says. “People said I was under the influence.” He compared his stoner-demeaner to his co-host Anne Hathaway’s over energetic display of musical-child-syndrome.

“I think the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned standing next to Anne. She has a lot of energy!,” says Franco. “I haven’t watched it back yet. Maybe I had low energy? I honestly played those lines as well as I could.”

Following this year’s Oscars, part of the criticism noted that Franco’s over-exhaustion in taking on more than is humanly capable is not an excuse to justify his lacklustre performance. Critics felt that he should have taken the gig more seriously than he did.

“I never dreamed of being, like, the best Oscar host ever,” he says on Friday night’s episode. “It was never on my list of things to do. It doesn’t mean I didn’t care and it doesn’t mean I didn’t try hard, right?”

Letterman reassures Franco through his classic wizardry of words, ”There will be, I think for you, a modicum of embarrassment, which you shouldn’t feel. That will pass. You’ll go into a period of numbness, and then you’ll become rightly defiant.”

It’s Franco, Professor James Franco

James Franco; the sleepless actor, campy director, theatre producer, writer, student, painter and now professor?

He gave NYU a shout-out at the Oscars, and according to an email sent to Washington Square News, next year he will be teaching a section of graduate film students.

Franco was asked why he hasn’t been very vocal about attending NYU, in response he wrote:

“I love NYU. My fellow NYU film students are some of my closest friends. I mentioned NYU at the Oscars and on David Letterman; I don’t know how to be more vocal about it. I will be teaching NYU graduate students next year.”

According to John Tintori, the chair of the graduate division of the Kanbar Institute of Film and TV, Franco will be teaching a section of third year directing in the fall. He also said that Franco has met with poet Louise Gluck and has her blessing for an adaptation of her work.

“James’ own film work has been based on poems, or about poets, so this is a nice fit for him,” Tintori wrote in an email. “James has an amazing mind. And limitless energy. Our students will be fortunate to learn from him.”

For those not set to attend class with Prof. Franco, “Your Highness” will be in theatres this April.

Rise of the Apes to be Released Sooner than Planned

Starring the one and only James Franco, the Planet of the Apes sequel ‘s release date has been bumped up – and not a moment too soon!

According to Perez Hilton, the new 20^th Century Fox film, Rise of the Apes, has been pushed up to an August 5^th release date after being bumped back to Thanksgiving weekend from its original June 24^th release date. Phew – that’s a lot of moving around!

20^th Century Fox is deeming the film their “last big event movie of the summer.” No pressure there!

Along Franco, some familiar faces that can be seen in the upcoming movie are John Lithgow and Freida Pinto, according to Obsessed with Film.

Perez reports, “The story will allegedly focus on Franco’s character in present-day San Francisco, as a scientist attempting to cure Alzheimer’s who inadvertently develops the intelligence in apes, that ultimately leads to the events of the other films.” Sounds pretty cool!

We can’t wait to see what this sequel has in store for us; we just hope that the shorter amount of time they have to finish it in won’t affect the quality of the movie! Will you be checking out this follow up to Planet of the Apes?

James Franco’s Past Comes Back to Haunt Him

As if he hasn’t gotten enough heat recently, James Franco’s ghosts of geeks past come back to haunt him!

According to Perez Hilton, the cast of Freaks and Geeks got together last weekend at the Paley Centre for Media’s annual Paley Fest…all but Franco, that is. And there was definitely no love in the air for the missing actor.

When the series’ creator Paul Feig stated that “there were no drama queens on the show”, Judd Apatow responded, “…Except for Franco.” Ouch.

Fellow freak-and-geeker Busy Phillipps, who’s character Kim Kelly was Franco’s on-screen girlfriend, said Franco once “threw her to the ground, even though the script didn’t call for the action.”

“Apparently, Franco decided that his character had “maybe been abused by his father,” but he never announced this to Philipps, and then during one scene when she lightly slapped him across the face, he freaked out and shouted “Don’t you ever [expletive] touch me again!” and then he threw her to the ground, which caused her to run to her trailer in tears.” Watch out world, we might have another Chris Brown on our hands!

It’s saddening to see such a notable actor going so downhill. We loved you in Spider Man and Pineapple Express, and we even loved you in 127 Hours. But after the Oscars, we lost most of our respect for you, and now this? Way to disappoint!

James Franco Stoned During the Oscars?

Following the 83rd Academy Awards on Sunday, the world has been a blaze about whether or not James Franco was, well, blazed. God forbid people would talk about the actual awards!

The New York Times said Franco came off “a little distracted and even blasé”. The Washington Post declared that Franco seemed “sort of heavy-lidded and smirky.” And USA Today simply said Franco appeared to be “preparing for a remake of ‘Dazed and Confused.’ Needless to say, the 127 Hours star appeared disconnected and bored by the festivities, and there was much speculation that he was stoned.

“James does not drink or do drugs ever,” his rep told E! Online, and several sources confirm that Franco is not a partier.

Did he pull a Pineapple Express and smoke up? Or is there a tiny possibility that the busy guy was just tired?

Let’s look at the facts for a second… he had spent several weeks flying back and forth from the East Coast to L.A. to rehearse for the Oscars on weekends and was still attending award shows for 127 Hours, and winning. Although the actor, director, writer, painter and full-time student may appear to be a machine, he is still human.

It’s not the first time Franco’s stoner demeanor has come into play, it almost cost him the role in 127 Hours.

Director Danny Boyle told E! Online in October that when they met “he was so relaxed—he looked stoned to me. People say that about him. But he’s not. In fact, he’s abstemious.”

The 83rd Academy Awards (2011) Results

James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted the 83rd Academy Awards on Sunday, February 27th and the evening dragged on in it’s traditional lengthy fashion as it honoured the best of film in 2011.

The evening was full of predictable results, with some surprises thrown into the mix. Those included Kirk Douglas’ flirtatious shenanigans, Melissa Leo’s heartfelt f-bomb, James Franco in drag, Bob Hope’s brief resurrection, and the ‘In Memory’ tribute that somehow forgot to acknowledge Charlie Sheen’s career.

Franco and Hathaway lured in a younger demographic with their good looks and auto-tuned shorts of Harry Potter and Toy Story, but the awards still targeted the traditional Academy audience. Keep in mind that the average age of those voting in the Academy is 56.

As for the awards, the Best Picture went to The King’s Speech, Best Actor went to Colin Firth for his performance in The King’s Speech and Best Actress went to Natalie Portman in Black Swan. Other contenders that cleaned up were Inception with 4 awards and The Social Network took home 3,

James Franco and Mila Kunis for ‘Wizard of Oz’ Prequel

Sam Raimi has just signed Mila Kunis to star opposite James Franco in his upcoming prequel to the 1939 classic ‘Wizard of Oz’, which has the working title: “Oz, the Great and Powerful”.

Kunis is reportedly playing the role of ‘Theodorah’ ,who goes on to become the Wicked Witch of the West and cackle until she melts. According to nymag.com, The Black Swan actress walked away from the Warner Bros.’ remake of Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1988 manga epic Akira to join Franco on this project.

Raimi and Franco, who have previously worked together on the Spiderman franchise, both agreed that Kunis would be perfect for the role. The 27 Hours star is set to be Oz, the great and powerful Wizard… a role that was previously connected to Johnny Depp and Robert Downey Jr.

The script is re imagined by playwright turned screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire of Rabbit Hole and Inkheart who has set to tell the story of the origins of the Wizard and the infamous witches: Glinda the Good Witch of the North, Evanorah the Wicked Witch of the East (the one under the house with the ruby slippers) and Theodorah the Wicked Witch of the West.

Perhaps Kunis can sway her Black Swan lip-locking buddy, Natalie Portman, to play the Good Witch… just a thought.

Shooting and pumping of box-office mojo is set to begin this summer in the magical land of Walt Disney Studios.

Nicole Kidman and James Franco to Hit the Broadway Stage

As reported by celebrity-gossip.net, powerhouse actors, Nicole Kidman and James Franco are set to appear in a revival of Tennessee William’s 1959 play, “Sweet Bird of Youth”.

This news comes alongside the Oscar Nominations in which Kidman and Franco are both up for leading actor/actress. “Sweet Bird of Youth” follows the story of a young gigolo and aspiring actor, Chance Wayne, who returns to his hometown to seek the help of Princess Kosmonopolis (also known as Alexandra Del Lago), a fading movie actress, in hopes that she will help him break into Hollywood. Wayne also returns to win back his former girlfriend whose father kicked him out of town years ago.

The play was adapted for the screen in 1962 with Richard Brooks directing and starring Paul Newman, Geraldine Page, and Rip Torn. It also went on to win an Oscar for Ed Begley in a best supporting role.

The play features very strong writing. With Kidman and Franco starring it should go on to receive rave reviews.
