Are you a Muppet of a man or a very manly Muppet?

It’s the question we all ask ourselves every morning and yesterday, Jason Segel – who starred, co-wrote, executive-produced and resurrected the new ‘Muppets’ franchise – and his Muppet brother Walter serenade us with the existential ballad of self-awareness. It follows the two coping with heartache on different levels. It’s the Flight of the Conchords-type deepness that is both equal parts heartbreaking and hilarious.

In fact, it was penned by FOTC’s beloved Bret McKenzie. He wrote a few more songs for the soundtrack – along with OK Go, The Fray, Weezer, Hayley Williams, Amy Lee and My Morning Jacket.

With cornball cameos in the film ranging from Jack Black, Neil Patrick Harris, Selena Gomez and Dave Grohl – this teaser doesn’t disappoint, with ‘Big Bang Theory’ star Jim Parsons dropping in. If you haven’t made it to theatres to see it yet… why not?

Short snippets of the video have been circulating around on TV and online, and the short-film does not disappoint. Featuring a battle-royale of sorts between the 1986 Beasties (Danny McBridge, Seth Rogan and Elijah Wood) dueling the future Beasties (John C. Reilly, Jack Black and Will Ferrell) and their acid-tripping rampage. Along the way, run in’s with various famous faces: Stanley Tucci, Jason Schwartzman, Susan Sarandon, Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Jason Bateman, Amy Poehler, David Cross, Kirsten Dunst, Steve Buscemi, Rashida Jones, Rainn Wilson, Maya Rudolph and Chloe Sevigny. Oh yes, Orlando Bloom drops in for the shenanigans also.

Adam Yauch wrote and directed the footage of the trio’s short film and music video, in connection with his indie film company Oscilloscope Laboratories.

“Normally the song is king and the footage has to kind of bow down to it. With this I flipped it,” he said, explaining how he used sound effects and toyed with the track’s tempo to fit the narrative, such as it is.

The group’s ninth album, “Hot Sauce Committee Part Two,” is due May 3.

Don’t like the Beasties? Well, check out the casting call: Elijah Wood, Will Ferrell, Danny McBride, John C. Reilly, Seth Rogen, Jack Black, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, David Cross, Will Arnett, Amy Poehler, Jason Schwartzman, Adam Scott, Rainn Wilson, Steve Buscemi, Chloë Sevigny, Alicia Silverstone, Martin Starr, Ted Danson, Rashida Jones, R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, Ad-Rock, Mike D, and MCA.

The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival last month and received a mix of reviews. In the video, we find the Beastie Boys (Elijah Wood, Seth Rogan, Danny McBride) in 1986 the day after the legendary “Fight for Your Right (To Party)” video took place. It is rumoured to be a long-running Saturday Night Live skit from there on out.

Judging by the preview, it appears to be some battle royale between past and present versions of the Beastie Boys. At the same time, it is between comedy of today versus yesterday. Some fascinating double-entendre, I do say.

Ch-ch-check it out!

Posted on andPOP:

I hadn’t seen the trailers for Year One. I wasn’t expecting a “Jack Black” movie; for me the most important name in the credits was director/co-writer Harold Ramis (Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day).

Year One begins with a boar hunt; not as convincing as the one in Apocalypto perhaps, but credible nonetheless. For two brief, shining minutes I thought here was a movie that understood that most important and least followed rule of comedy: the more seriously the participants take it, the funnier it is.

Then a hunter played by Horatio Sanz is hit with a spear, the type that if thrown properly would have gored him. It barely scratches his shoulder, and after discovering Sanz isn’t a boar, Black apologizes for throwing it. He sounds exactly like the Jack Black we’ve seen in countless other films (King Kong excepted), and if the movie began here I would have found myself wondering what he was doing dressed as a caveman.

Michael Cera sounds exactly like the character we’ve seen in countless other films too – which, as a coworker pointed out, is odd, because he played a completely different character in his breakthrough, Arrested Development.

Soon Black is thrown out of his village for eating the fruit of knowledge. He accidentally burns the village as he’s leaving, so everyone else has to leave too. Rejected by the girl of his dreams (Juno Temple), Cera’s character soon follows.

At first, Black and Cera continue to stumble across some bible stories: they witness Cain (David Cross) accidentally murder his brother Abel (Paul Rudd); they prevent Abraham (Hank Azaria) from sacrificing Isaac (Christopher Mintz-Plasse); and they journey to Sodom, which you might think they end up burning to the ground (at least, I did). But no; 40 minutes in, the bible angle finishes. Black and Cera wind up in Sodom (along with, coincidentally, the rest of their tribe), and stay there.

Like all viewers, critics are biased; I have a soft spot for dumb comedies, am critical of religion, and appreciated seeing a movie whose central thesis (if it has one) was, “what if there is no God?” I like Cera, and Black in the right material, and accepted their pseudo-stoner dialogue without difficulty.Year One is more genial than funny, but its lightweight story is enough to string us along, and you can tell the actors were having a good time. I’ll admit I laughed occasionally, and when I wasn’t laughing or closing my eyes I smiled much of the way through.

Unfortunately, biases run both ways, and I have a big one when it comes to comedy: I hate toilet humour.

Despise it.

To this day I’ve never seen “classic” scenes such as Leslie Mann vomiting shrimp all over Steve Carell in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, or the “pale ale” in American Pie. I accept that on a conceptual level it serves its purpose (it makes the characters painfully human) and a segment of the audience finds it funny. In an otherwise wonderful movie, I’m happy to close my eyes for a moment and move on.

In Year One, however, something disgusting happens every 20 minutes: Jack Black examines (and eats) a pile of shit; Michael Cera, while hanging upside down, pees on his face (judging from Black’s lines, some of it lands in his mouth and nose); a man sharing a bed with Cera proudly farts repeatedly. In a major supporting role, Oliver Platt plays a high priest who’s extremely hairy, and the camera lingers while Cera is forced to slowly rub oil all over his chest.

Does a majority of the audience actually find this funny? I thought nothing could top the running gag involving gum thrown up at Penn Station in last year’s Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Once again Hollywood proved me wrong.

There are other problems – Mintz-Plasse’s Isaac is wasted, while Cross’s Cain remains onscreen long past his sell-by date; Black’s love interest (June Diane Raphael) falls for him even though he repeatedly forgets about her, jokes about her parents’ deaths, and would happily dump her for Sodom’s princess (House’’s Olivia Wilde) – but they pale in comparison to the film’s desire to shock.

I enjoyed parts of Year One because I kept hoping it wouldn’t disgust me again (the shit-eating scene comes at the beginning; the Michael-Cera-pissing-on-his-face scene near the end). You’d have to pay me to see it a second time, and during that repeat viewing I would get up ten minutes into the movie and never come back.

Variety has confirmed that a sequel is in production for the Jack Black flick. Black will resume his role, this time taking his summer school group on a trip to discover the roots of rock ‘n’ roll.

Richard Linklater and Mike White will be back as well, as director and writer, respectively.

White has already finished the script, as he claimed last month that writing it made him weep. At a screenwriting panel, he said, “”I actually just completed a draft of what’s potentially the sequel [to School of Rock], and I’m still, like, crying as I’m writing the script. I try to come at it from a personal place…”

Posted on andPOP:

Jack Black is gearing up to be a new father all over again.

The actor and Tenacious D musician confirmed that he and his cellist wife Tanya Haden are expecting their second child while promoting his upcoming film, Michel Gondry’s “Be Kind Rewind,” in Los Angeles this weekend.

The couple, who married in 2006, has a one-and-a-half-year-old son named Samuel.

While Black didn’t specify the due date or if the baby would be a boy or a girl, he told reporters he has taken a “day-to-day” approach to parenting.

“I’ve been told that two children is three times as hard as one child, but then strangely three children is easier than one,” he said.

“Be Kind Rewind,” also starring Mos Def, Mia Farrow and Danny Glover, is set to hit theatres on Feb. 22.

Posted on andPOP:

If you are looking for gross-out humour and fun, then look no further at the box office than “Nacho Libre,” starring Jack Black. “Nacho Libre” is Jack Black at Jack Black’s best, showcasing his witty humour that you can’t help but laugh at, even if you think he is gross.

“Nacho Libre,” directed by Jared Hess, starts out innocently enough. Black, who plays Nacho, is a man of God at a monastery filled with orphans and cooks their food. Nacho realizes that he doesn’t have enough money to buy food for the orphans, after a bit of decision making, decides to follow his desire to start wrestling. Only problem: wrestling is frowned upon by God.

Throw in some gross humour as Nacho and his partner in wrestling crime, Esqueleto, played by Hector Jimenez, practices and try to get in shape for the fights. Yes, it is gross, especially when Black has his shirt off, but after the first ten minutes of seeing his manly physique in tight “stretchy” pants, it all blurs together and is more funny than gross.

There is a bright spot in Nacho’s wrestling partner and friend, Esqueleto. His bad teeth, dumb expression, skinny body, goofy smile, and insulting one-liners, drew just as many laughs from the audience for him as Jack Black.

So, we follow all the losses that the pair manages to get, and they get paid a bit for just fighting. The fight scenes are amusing as Nacho prances and skips around the ring and gets slapped silly by midget wrestlers. But it soon turns into a story about Nacho’s greed for fancy clothes to match his stretchy pants and winning, as he forgets to buy food for the orphans one day.

In between all this is some more gross-out humour as Nacho tries to win the affections of a nun, Sister Encarnación, played by Ana de la Reguera, in the monastery, who helps him get back on track and want to fight for the orphans (God frowns on fighting, unless it is for something good).

In the end, and after being kicked out of the monastery for wrestling, Nacho finally gets to win the match against the best wrestler around and wins money for the orphans, and possibly the Sister’s heart. Suddenly it is a feel good film and everyone in the theatre is cheering and smiling as he defeats the best.

All-in-all, the film is good for the type of comedy it portrays. If you are a fan of Jack Black and you like silly, gross-out humour, this is for you. Even if you don’t care for that type of comedy, give it a try, because you may find yourself laughing despite yourself. And, if you are fan of Black’s singing from School of Rock, he does have a solo in this film that will have your ears twitching.

Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) will direct, guaranteeing some serious surreal fun. A two-month shoot is planned for September, with a budget under $20 million.

You can catch Black this summer in Nacho Libre, in which he plays a priest who moonlights as a wrestler. Yup.
