Chance, the 14-year-old YouTube protegé follows suit with the generation of Beliebers and has conquered the essential teen girl demographic. Its only been two years since he performed a soulful piano cover of Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’ at his elementary school’s talent show and caught the eye of Geffen Records and inspired Ellen DeGeneres to sign him as the first artist on her label: eleveneleven.

She tweeted about her protegé this evening: “I’m so proud of @GreysonChance. His first album debuted at #2 on iTunes today!”

I had a chance to talk with Greyson Chance during the recording process about the album, life and his first tour, check out that interview here.

Gaga’s held the #1 spot since August 2010, and has been escalating to this record-breaking number ever since. She is the queen of the Internet – Lady Twitter perhaps?

Leading up to the May 23 release of her second album ‘Born This Way,’ Gaga’s latest track ‘Hair’ will also be released today at 1pm PT / 4pm ET as part of iTunes’ “Countdown to Born This Way” promotion.

In an early review of ‘Hair’ by Rolling Stone, the track is described as an “inspirational song in the mold of ‘Born This Way,’ but it’s a bit weirder, mixing the yearning romantic melodrama of Pat Benetar’s “We Belong” with the hard industrial metal edge of Broken-era Nine Inch Nails.”

The track features E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons, whose sax appeared on last week’s new single ‘The Edge of Glory.’

I love that Gaga is releasing a new single every week. It gives fans a lot of anticipation and excitement without giving everything away. We’ll post the new single later on today, I’m sure it’ll be great!

The big, curly, blonde hair. The rock n’ roll sense of style. The I-don’t-care attitude. But her music and background are definitely no ordinary story.

“My dad is Brazilian and Portuguese and my mom is Native American. It’s funny because I came out looking like, pretty white,” says Ferreira over a phone interview. “I’m Caucasian-looking and none of my family is; everyone in my family is at least two shades darker than me.”

Ferreira, who recently released her EP “As If!” on iTunes on March 22, is definitely a star on the rise. Her and her song “Sex Rules” have appeared in national CK One ads, she has modeled for Nylon, Vogue Italia, Vs. Magazine, and on top of it all, is releasing a full-length album sometime next year.

It’s no surprise her modeling career has taken off, though – the LA native is a real head-turner. Her big brown eyes command attention, her style makes you want to rethink your entire closet, and her hair is just downright cool. But at the end of the day, what comes first – singing or modeling?

“I mean, singing will always be my first passion. But they’re all very important. Modeling is important to me and it’s definitely helped me get out there, so I don’t think it’s a disadvantage,” says Ferreira.

The singer got her start on MySpace, the online music social-networking scene that has launched the careers of Lily Allen and Sean Kingston alike. She attributes her big break to constant hard work and pestering record labels. “I wasn’t going out and doing really bad things, obviously,” says Ferreira. “I was going out and kind of getting myself out there.”

This pestering eventually lead to capturing the attention of Bloodshy & Avant, two of the hottest music producers today responsible for many Britney Spears hits such as Toxic, My Prerogative, and Me Against the Music. The Swedish duo worked on two songs off Sky’s EP – “Haters Anonymous” and “108″ – as well as her single “One.” The result? A unique sound that battles mainstream pop with French and Dutch quality.

This electro dance-beat style, combined with her spirited lyrics and distinct voice, is even enough to distance her from those pesky Britney Spears comparisons. Think of her as just as much fun, but with more raw talent. She can sing live, after all.

“Britney Spears has a very specific style, obviously, and I think I do too, but lyrically I think it’s so different. I think I’m a little more, quote on quote, ‘quirkier’ I guess,” says Ferreira. “It’s being straightforward to you but in a very different way.”

Ferreira, like Spears, is also no stranger to controversy. Her song “Sex Rules” got a lot of negative attention because of its openly sexual nature, which many thought was inappropriate for the 18-year-old. In this modern day and age, though, really?

“I kind of just ignore it. The funny thing is there are so many songs that are like that,” says Ferreira. “So many people act like they’ve never heard that, but the truth is, it’s annoying because there are so many songs about the same thing.”

Although people-pleasing isn’t quite in her nature, her individual style and music is definitely garnering an impressive fan base. On April 1, Ferreira will be headlining her first ever concert at SUPERFRAICHE in Brooklyn. I guess not listening to what people have to say is great for your career.

When she’s not performing, Ferreira says she’s writing a lot in her free time and promises her album will be as good, if not better, than her EP. One thing she doesn’t plan on doing, though, is allowing criticism to dictate her work.

“Everyone thinks they know what’s best for you, but the truth is, what’s best for you is what’s best for you,” says Ferreira. “Some people forget that. “

Amen.

The great thing about today’s technology is that it can be combined with charity efforts on a global scale. I think this is a great cause and great concept – iTunes is one of the hottest markets right now, so why not use it for good? I know many young people who don’t exactly have the money to donate, but I’m pretty sure we all have money on our iTunes account, so this little bit can help in a major way.

Posted on andPOP:

Lady GaGa stopped by The Gayle King Show and announced that she will be releasing not one, but two music videos for her new single ‘Born This Way’.

The first video will be out on Monday, February 28, and the second will be released later as a more stripped-down performance of the single. She will sell the video on iTunes and gear the profits towards an anti-bullying charity, which is fitting since the song is about accepting who you are and living without prejudice.

GaGa has given no hints about what the video will look like or include, but one can only imagine after her egg spectacle at the Grammys. The video is directed by Nick Knight, a British fashion photographer, who coincidentally shot GaGa for her Vanity Fair cover in September.

I’m excited for this video premiere. I can always count on GaGa to deliver something creative and exciting, a great change from predictable artists dominating the charts. Even if I hate it or don’t understand it, at least this video will leave me with some sort of emotion or opinion. As long as she’s got me talking, I’m happy.

I think that’s what a lot of pop stars today lack: creativity. When we watch a Britney Spears video or listen to a Rihanna song, do we really find ourselves that amazed or induced in thought? Of course not. It’s just another young, hot thing dancing around in her underwear. Which, at times is nice, but for the most part, not very stimulating. GaGa, on the other hand, has meaning behind her songs. She has depth, she has a voice. Whether people like her or hate her, at least she has a stance on something. And now, with two videos on the way, we’re promised double the freaky-deaky and double the opinion. Bring it.

The video is sure to be a success, though. The song went straight to #1 literally everywhere, and sold 1,000,000 copies in one week – the fastest song to do that, ever. I don’t know what it is about GaGa, but people love to scrutinize her, love to discuss her, and love to watch her. To me, that’s a modern pop star done right. Take notes, Britney.

Just Dance has officially been downloaded over 6 MILLION TIMES on iTunes, making Lady Gaga the first solo female performer to have a song go 6 TIMES PLATINUM! It is just the second song to ever be downloaded that many times, the first being I Gotta Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas. Those damn Peas.

The real scary part of this? There’s no sign of Gaga slowing down no. Miss Alejandro’s empire has reached an astounding net worth of $100 million (according to celebritynetworth.com), and the support, and dollars, keep pouring in for the eccentric blonde.

Just Dance? More like Just Download.

So she gets paid to appear in the commercial, along with earning some extra bucks on the downloads.

Posted on andPOP:

For the past several days, iTunes featured a massive advertisement on their template that warned music fans everywhere the company would shortly be making a massive announcement. The dorks on macrumors.com and other Apple tech forums thought the announcement was undoubtedly going to be about Apple’s new software storage mega-computer, the Cloud.

Long story short, the dorks were wrong. It’s not some hocus-pocus, metaphorical computer-cloud. It’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band!

That’s right. iTunes finally announced on Tuesday that The Beatles’ catalogue is now available for purchase for the first time.

I know what you’re thinking: Who in their right mind was waiting for iTunes to sell Beatles music so it could be incorporated it into their library? Were their really people out there before yesterday who sat around twiddling their thumbs just saying to themselves “Man I wanna listen to Revolver right now but I sold my record player and iTunes doesn’t sell it.” NO! There weren’t! My theory is that this is iTunes telling us we finally had time to isolate the most bland 30-seconds of every Beatles song so you can be turned off of their music forever. Thanks!!!

In 1968, The Beatles founded Apple Records. In 2010, Apple’s records finally found The Beatles.

DJAY is a very capable Macintosh audio software solution that will provide both beginners and veterans the tools needed to mix the music just the way it sounds in a night club. – at a very reasonable price. Recently released version 3 of Algorithm’s DJAY provides a solid software system that can appeal to beginners and experts. Simple enough to use right out of the box, with a little time and a bit of talent, you’ll be mixing the digital music from your Mac just like the pros.

Upon launching DJAY with the usual click of your mouse, you will be presented with three basic panels: The largest panel on the left will be a familiar to most – the good old ‘DUAL TURNTABLE’ metaphor. To the right of this fully active ‘DUAL TURNTABLE’ design, there will be a couple of re-sizeable panels that represent your iTunes PLAYLISTS and CONTENTS, providing access to your complete Macintosh audio collection. As expected, these playlists can be promptly sorted or viewed as Albums, Artists, Composers, Genres, or Playlists. Assuming the average Macintosh user is as familiar with iTunes, as one is with standard Mac OS software, getting up and running with DJAY for Mac will be pretty easy for most and you will be spinnin’ in no time at all.

In the upper right hand corner is a handy SEARCH field that will quickly find particular titles from your integrated iTunes playlists. Once the correct title appears in the playlist, located just below the search field, putting the music into play is as simple as dragging the song title directly onto one of the twin TURNTABLES located on the adjacent panel. With a USB hardware item such at the Griffin iMike, you can set DJAY up to preview one song while the other song is already in play. DJAY can be configured to display actual album graphics matching the song selections that are on each of the turntables. Seeing the current song graphics spinning on each of the turntables is not only very cool, it is useful as well, as it provides the related visuals to help the disc jockey keep track of all musical activities.

Below the listing of the song titles, there is the AUTOMIX window, which will AUTOmatically MIX music so you can hop onto the dance floor and enjoy the party too. With AUTOMIX activated, you can easily set up any number of tunes to mix seamlessly from one song to the next while tending to other distractions or setting up additional requests from party patrons. AUTOMIX can be activated by clicking on the large, centrally placed AUTOMIX button, from the Library menu or with Hot Keys (Shift-Option-A). At that point, songs from the currently selected PLAYLIST will begin to play. The order of the AUTOMIX selections can be modified by dragging titles from the playlist directly onto the inactive turntable. Clicking just to the right of the AUTOMIX button is an additional little square icon with an arrow facing downwards that will slide open the AUTOMIX CUE window. You can drag song titles on the fly into the AUTOMIX cue window to line up any number of songs that will flow flawlessly from one to the next. AUTOMIX is so very easy to use it may actually cause confusion if you change the selected list after activating AUTOMIX. The order in which you perform the ‘actions’ will determine which playlist the software is selecting the songs from. Until you get used to the ritual order of things, you might hear what you think is random songs being played but in actual fact the DJAY software is doing what you told it to do – playing the songs from the Playlist that was selected when you activated the AUTOMIX feature. Thankfully this seemingly random selection of music can be easily re- set by de-selecting AUTOMIX, choosing the intended playlist, and then re- selecting AUTOMIX. Ultimately the way to avoid any confusion with this aspect of the AUTOMIX feature is to open the AUTOMIX CUE window and then to drag in the songs you want to mix together one by one. This is almost as hard to explain as it is to deal with at first, but it is worth mentioning because the software is not messing up, it is just doing what it is programmed to do and you will be thankful to discover the process of controlling AUTOMIX is worth the short concentration curve.

The HISTORY window which can be activated by way of the WINDOW MENU, hot keys (Shift-H) or clicking the tiny CLOCK Icon that is found just to the left of the giant AUTOMIX button is very useful for review and archival purposes. As songs are played, a playlist is continuously compiled to document the titles and order in which each and every song was played. The disk jockey can choose to SAVE this information generated in the HISTORY window as a genuine PLAYLIST in iTunes, print/save this list of songs as a PDF for future reference or even drag songs in the list that were played earlier right back into the AUTOMIX PLAYLIST or right on to the TURNTABLES if desired. And finally, at the bottom of the HISTORY window the total length of time consumed by the songs listed in this WINDOW is displayed. The HISTORY window is a very convenient and useful tool for the amateur music lover as well as the professional disc jockey.

BEATMIXING is a must have feature for any pro level audio mixing software. While BEATMIXING properly takes a little practice, skill and patience, DJAY offers the tools to get the job done. When you drag a song onto the turntable window DJAY does a very advanced sophisticated analysis of the audio data and in addition to the tempo, DJ locates every single beat in the song. When you press the SYNC BUTTON, DJAY not only matches the tempo it also aligns the ‘beat grids’ of the two songs that are playing. DJAY contains sophisticated programming that will ‘Find the beat location and BPM (Beats Per Minute) and will analyze the overall intensity of the audio signal to keep the volumes equal so you don’t get one song much louder than the other.’ The user can push the SYNC BUTTON multiple times in order to direct the software to line up the beats to ‘human’ ears. Due to the excellent programming, BEATMIXING can indeed be accomplished with DJAY with its present tools, but I would hope that future consideration would be given by Algorithm to add an audio wave presentation to provide the disc jockey with visual guidance, allowing for more speed and accuracy during the BEATMIXING process.

DJAY is basically pretty easy to use, it integrates very well with iTunes and has a clean, practical interface. DJAY is sophisticated, with many exciting features that would benefit with better documentation and perhaps even some online step by step video demonstrations which would show off some of DJAY’s key capabilities. Download the demo version of DJAY http://www.djay-software.com/download and find out for yourself just how well this software performs. At only $50.00 USD, people may think that DJAY is a not worthy when in fact DJAY is a bargain at twice the price.

Below is a listing of some of DJAY powerful features:

iTunes Integration

Supports music purchased from iTunes store

Drag and Drop Mixing

Full song search capabilities

Beat and Tempo detection

Cook plans to start on his debut album after the three-month “American Idol Live Tour” wraps up in the end of the summer.

Posted on andPOP:

Jack White definitely knows how to keep things interesting.

His band, The Raconteurs, are releasing their second album next week, entitled “Consolers of the Lonely.” Haven’t heard of it? Well, that’s because the band is changing the way albums are released.

Instead of releasing the album to press and promoting it beforehand, the band is releasing it to everyone in all mediums at the same time.

“The Raconteurs are happy to announce that in one week’s time their second album, entitled Consolers Of The Lonely, will be available EVERYWHERE Tuesday, March 25th,” their press release reads. “‘Album’ meaning: full length vinyl, CD and digital formats; and ‘everywhere’ meaning: local mom and pop Indie retailers, corporate superstores, supermarkets, iTunes, Amazon, the band’s own website and any other location that could get the record up and going this quickly (some places couldn’t move this fast, so they will join in as soon as they can).

The timeline for the album is amazing. It was “mastered and completed in the first week of March. It was then taken immediately to a vinyl pressing plant. Then to a CD pressing plant. Then preparations to sell it digitally began. March 25th became the soonest date to have it available in EVERY FORMAT AT ONCE.”

The band prefers that fans download the album together, not just as individual tracks.

“We are tied to this 99-cent model and it has been a bit of a collar around our neck,” Graham Henderson, president of the Canadian Recording Industry Association, said.

Record labels want the ability to adjust their prices on the site, instead of being tied into an agreement that was reached nearly seven years ago.

Henderson said one of the changes that should be reflected is that the prices for music by new artists should not be the same as more established, successful performers.

iTunes is currently the second highest music selling location, beat by Walmart – though experts expect iTunes to surpass Walmart by the end of the year.

Posted on andPOP:

Gaming giant Sega’s infamous blue mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, made his Apple-platform debut last week on iTunes. The original adventure that helped maintain the Sega Genesis’ popularity, thereby providing a competitive alternative to the Super Nintendo gaming console, is now available for download from iTunes for $4.99.

Remarkably, unlike games previously launched for the iPod – be they the standard, casual games or even arcade classics, such as Pac-Man – this new edition of Sonic the Hedgehog is not emulation. “It’s a new piece of code and it pushes the hardware,” says Sega of America President Simon Jeffery in an interview with IGN.com.

Nonetheless, despite Apple’s enthusiasm to tap into a gaming market full of potential, it might be awhile before gamers get used to their new hand-held controller. The single-thumb approach necessitated by the iPod’s portable size may present a drawback to gaming fans accustomed to the two-handed controller. However, casual gamers and old-schoolers alike will eventually get used to the new game-controller reality.

Perhaps on your next subway ride you’ll glimpse at someone clutching their iPod in two hands, using one thumb to jump while the other moves, all to the vibrant sounds of ‘beep-boop’. You’ll know that Sonic was here.

Some of the artists signed to Universal include 50 Cent, Eminem and Fallout Boy.

Users will be able to purchase this music through Google, Wal-Mart and Amazon’s music stores, but the songs won’t be available through iTunes, the largest digital music store. However, songs embedded with digital rights management will continue to be available on iTunes.

The experiment will run from August to January and will allow Universal to complete research by analyzing sales data.
