Posted on andPOP:

One of the things that set John Mayer apart on his debut LP was the acoustic-feel. The acoustic guitar is replaced by an electric guitar on his new album, “Heavier Things,” but fear not, as the uniqueness of John Mayer lives on.

The album does a lot of things for Mayer: it shows he can write gifted lyrics, how he can switch up his tempos, and how he can make the sudden addition of a trumpet into a song seem natural (as with “Clarity”).

But most importantly, it shows that it does not matter what kind of instrument Mayer uses; it’s his voice that still makes him worthy of a Grammy win. Listeners will give in to his soothing and melodic voice, and by the time the ten songs are complete, they’ll listen again, just to hear that intonation.

In terms of whether this album has more sing-a-long hits- not exactly. There’s no standout song that is sure to have people running through the halls of their schools or singing about the female body as a mirage. Mayer did not try for the poppy chorus; however, almost any one of these songs can become a hit. The album is full of potential singles; it’s just a matter of in what order Mayer decided to release them.
