After fifteen years, two sequels, and the Stab mise-en-abime franchise-within-a franchise, Ghostface has finally made his grand return to the screen, and there is no guessing what his favorite scary movie is.
Scream 4 is a half-shallow stab at a hyperrealist, postmodern slasher film. Though it’s clear that the film is just “too meta” for words, it is overly reliant on its genre clichés that were already too heavily ensconced throughout the franchise.
The naïve victim for eternity, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) returns to the small American town of Woodsboro on the 15th anniversary of the first murders to promote her new novel, which is ironically about overcoming victimization. Of course, once news hits the town of her arrival, so too does a new string of gruesome murders, which closely mimics the pattern of the initial killing spree. SO META right?
Retired journalist Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) is quick to jump on the story despite the stern warnings of her wimpy husband Dewey (David Arquette), who is now the sheriff of Woodsboro. Gale teams up with the young cinephiles of the local high school cinema club in an attempt to dismantle the “rules” of the new Ghostface. Gale and the cinema society still cannot outsmart Ghostface even when utilizing advanced technology such as personal headset cameras and video blogs. Undoubtedly the peeping Tom tactics are reversed and the camera is turned on Gale and the students. Yes, Gale, killers are also up to date with modern technology.
Like Scream 3, the backbone of the film is a set of complex rules, however in this case the rules are cleverly subverted as a way to return full cycle to the first set of murders. The murder scheme is familiar as victims run UP the stairs, into basements, empty parking garages, drunken parties, and basically straight into the killers knife.
The same assortment of precocious yet misinformed teenagers are played by the popular young Hollywood stars, Hayden Panettiere, Emma Roberts, and Rory Culkin, who are all surprisingly good. The teens are far more exciting to watch than the still idiotic survivors of the previous attacks, Dewey, Sidney, and Gale.
The tropes and ploys are mostly for comic effect, and you will laugh probably more than you will cringe. The gore is far from the torture porn variety save for a prompt glimpse of a bloody intestine, and a final scene that can only be described as excessive.
The film is fast paced and the ending will be surprising for some, yet predictable for others who are keen on deconstructing the rules of the slasher genre within the frame of the film. Don’t be fooled, the self-reflexivity is tiresome and overdone. Wes Craven’s mark is visible, but it seems he too is getting tired of trying to play the Derrida of horror films.
However, the film is saved by its cameos, featuring Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell, and the starring role of Roberts who outshines her days of starring on “Unfabulous” and replaces them with an unforgettable performance.
Let’s not kid ourselves, this is pretty hot. In a recent interview Hayden explains the kiss was her idea.
Although she may appear angelic, the young actress doesn’t put up with reporters when it comes to privacy. While being bombarded with photographers at an event in Hawaii she yelled “Back up,” Eonline reports. When one reporter tried to get her attention by touching her shoulder she screamed “Don’t you ever touch me” and finished the scene by saying “You all make my life miserable!” Perhaps the young actress isn’t meant to be in the spotlight after all.
Hayden Panettiere is 18, and now you can get into her pants!
The Heroes star is auctioning off some of her wardrobe on PanettiereCloset.com, in order to raise funds for the Save The Whales Again campaign.
The cause is close to Panettiere’s heart, after she visited Tiji, Japan last fall. She joined a group of peaceful protestors, and swam out on a surf board to the nets where fisherman had trapped a group of whales. Panettiere and her friends wanted to cut the nets and set the animals free, but soon the fishermen had caught up to them and became violent, even attempting to harm the protestors with their boat’s propeller. Panettiere has since found out that there is a warrant for her arrest in Japan.
Though the new site has some kinks that need to be worked out, some of the most popular items of Panettiere’s clothing will be auctioned off in the coming days. The site offers bottoms, caps, dresses, hoodies, outerward, shirts, shoes, watches, and more, all of which were donated by Panettiere. The items are not necessarily right off Panettiere’s back, however: the site explains that many of the items “have never been worn, while some have been worn by Hayden once. (e.g. to awards ceremonies, photo shoots, etc.)”
“Heroes” hotties Milo Ventimiglia and Hayden Panettiere can deny it all they want, but People Magazine have confirmed that they are a couple.
Panettiere, 18, and Ventimiglia, 30, first set tongues wagging in September by appearing very intimate at an Emmy party. But Panettiere, Ventimiglia and their “Heroes” co-stars claimed the pair were just friends.
A rep for Panettiere was mum on the subject, saying “We do not respond to inquiries from the media regarding Ms. Panettiere’s personal life.” However, “People” magazine does not print stories that they have not confirmed, at least off the record.
According to the magazine, Panettiere’s mother doesn’t mind that her barely legal daughter is dating a 30-year-old. “Hayden’s mom adores Milo,” a family friend told People. “She thinks he’s so cute. She tells her friends that he’s her boyfriend. She’s very proud.”
If Hayden Panettiere wants to stay out of jail, she should probably stay away from Japan.
An arrest warrant has been issued in Japan for the Heroes star, she revealed in a recent interview.
“I learned today that I have an arrest warrant out for me in Japan because of what I did for Save the Whales,” the 18-year-old star told E! News.
Last month, footage of the actor-turned-activist engaging in a heated confrontation with Japanese fisherman was swirling around the internet. Panettiere joined other activists in an attempt to interfere with a dolphin hunt in a cove near Taiji in southwestern Japan and garnered a lot of attention for her heroic endeavour.
When asked what the warrant could mean for her, Panettiere said, “Potentially jail, but I doubt it. … I guess they could come here and get us, but probably not.”
She also seemed to be unfazed by the fear of incarceration. “I’d do it again,” she said of the protest to E! “Very possibly, might do it again.”
The star is also surprised at the media coverage her good deeds have attracted.
“I was very excited that people were interested in what we did,” she said. “In [Hollywood], you tend to only get publicity for not wearing underwear or going to rehab.”
Heroes star Hayden Panettiere seems to be getting some inspiration from her TV character.
The 18-year-old star played real-life hero last week as she joined activists from the U.S. and Australia in paddling out on surfboards to try and reach a pod of dolphins before it was driven into a nearby cove and slaughtered.
Before the team of activists could reach the dolphins, their path was blocked by a fishing boat of angry fisherman intent on carrying on with their hunting.
The altercation was caught on video and the footage shows the fisherman using the boat’s propellers to stop the surfers and even poking at them with a boat hook, eventually forcing the team to return to shore. The video also captured an emotional Panettiere returning to shore visibly shaken by the incident as tears stream down the starlet’s face.
Panettiere was working with the Save Japan Dolphins coalition that attempts to disrupt the annual slaughter of dolphins by Japanese fisherman, who kill an estimated 23,000 of the sea creatures each year.
In parts of Japan many locals believe dolphins should be treated like fish and the hunting of the mammals is seen as culturally acceptable.
Amidst stern denials of romance, Milo Ventimiglia has reportedly bought “Heroes” co-star Hayden Panettiere an 18 karat gold ring.
According to “In Touch,” the Tiffany & Co. ring is worth $1,950 and Ventimiglia had it inscribed with the words “Sweet like Hayden.”
The belated birthday gift from 30-year-old Ventimiglia to 18-year-old Panettiere may very well be a platonic gift between friends, but it’s not going to help them avoid those pesky rumours.
Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia, stars of the NBC smash hit Heroes, have been denying for weeks that they are romantically involved.
But a video of them cuddling and dirty dancing at an Emmy after party has just surfaced on YouTube.
It’s convenient timing for the show, which premieres in its second season on Monday.
While early plotlines hinted at a possible romance between the couple’s characters, they were later revealed to be related.
The couple is controversial because Ventimiglia is 30 years old, while Panettiere turned 18 just one month ago.
In December, when USA Today asked Ventimiglia what he found attractive about Panettiere, he responded, “Ask me Aug. 21 (her birthday), and I’ll tell you a zillion things.”
The dance floor wasn’t the only place Panettiere was getting into trouble at the Emmy’s. TV Guide has reported that she threatened to “kill” an US Weekly reporter on the red carpet. The reporter had recently written a story about Panettiere’s break up with MTV personality Stephen Coletti.
Ventimiglia has previously dated his Gilmore Girls co-star Alexis Bledel.
Blonde beauty HAYDEN PANETTIERE has not always sported long flowing locks – she spent the first three years of her life bald.
The star of the U.S. hit show HEROES admits her follicle growth was slower
than most tots.
She says, “I was completely bald until I was three. My mother had to tie bows
around my head so that I wouldn’t scare other children.”
While other celebrities such as Britney Spears and Mena Suvari have opted for the bald look in recent months, Panettiere has no plans to lose her blonde
hair, saying: “I don’t think it would be very flattering.” (NLI/SMT/ES)

HEROES star HAYDEN PANETTIERE was forced to “buy back” her identity after a
fraudster posted fake information about her online.
An internet prankster posed as Panettiere for several months and mislead fans by ‘revealing’ juicy titbits about the blonde beauty.
She says, “(One report said I was learning karate and kickboxing). No! That’s bulls**t. That comes from a while ago – when I was younger, somebody stole my identity. They pretended to be me for a few months and made up a load of stuff before we realised.”
The situation was soon resolved as the actress bought back her identity for a “fair amount”. (NLI/SMT/ES)
