Glenn Ford, an actor best known for his roles in movies like “Gilda” and “The Big Heat,” has died. He passed away on Wednesday in his Beverly Hills home at the age of 90.

A statement from the Beverly Hills Police Department says that paramedics were called to the actor’s house in the afternoon and found him dead. No details about a possible cause of death were released.

Four months ago, Ford was scheduled to make his first public appearance in 15 years for a 90th birthday ceremony. Sadly, ill health prevented him from showing up.

Ford’s career hit its peak in the 1950s, when he was a major box office draw. He starred alongside Rita Hayworth in five films.

Though his career began to slide through the ’60s, Ford had already cemented himself as a Hollywood great.

“He is a good — if not the best — example of that second-string group, the dependable and efficient actor,” wrote critic David Shipmann.

Ford was born Gwyllyn Samuel Newton Ford on May 1, 1916 in Ste-Christine, Portneuf, Quebec. When he was 7, he moved with his family to Santa Monica, CA, eventually becoming a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1939.

Ford is survived by his 61-year-old son Peter, who is also an actor.
