Posted on andPOP:

Nirvana’s lead singer, Kurt Cobain, has taken the King, Elvis Presley’s place atop Forbes.com’s list of top-earning dead celebrities.

Reuter’s reports that the grunge rocker took in $50 million between October 2005 and October 2006. Presley, who has dominated this chart since its inception six years ago, went down a notch in the most recent tally, raking in only $42 million, as opposed to last year’s $45 million.

Forbes.com bases these findings on revenues from licensing deals and for using the late celebrities’ image and work in outside advertising.

This was Cobain’s first time on the list, thanks mostly to his widow, Courtney Love, selling 25 per cent of her stake in Nirvana’s song catalogue to a New York publishing company PrimeWave.

Other deceased celebrities on the list include “Peanuts” cartoon creator Charles Schulz at $35 million, Beatles legend John Lennon at $24 million and genius Albert Einstein at $20 million.

Posted on andPOP:

Something tells me Elvis wasn?t much for gymnastics in his latter years. Nevertheless, Cirque du Soleil has revealed plans to produce a number of shows based on the King of Rock ?n? Roll, reports Reuters.

The venture, called the ?Elvis Presley Projects,? is a joint effort between Cirque and CKX Inc., a company that owns rights to Presley’s name, likeness and music publishing.

CKX Chairman Robert Sillerman said an Elvis Presley character might be part of the shows, which will also include ?original recordings and new performances? of Presley’s music.

Performances of the new show are slated to begin in 2008. The Elvis production will become part of Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil?s 13-show repertoire.

Psychic Uri Geller and two partners purchased the Tennessee house that Elvis Presley called home before moving to Graceland. The house sold for $905,100 US on Internet auction site eBay.

?We intend to restore it to its old glory. We would like to bring sick children there (for tours), Palestinian children, Israeli children, American children,? the Israeli-born Geller told Reuters.

?Hopefully one day we might get approval to turn it into a museum.?

The four-bedroom, two-bath house in Memphis was purchased by Presley in 1956 with a $500 down payment. He lived there for 13 months.

Geller has been an avid collector of Elvis memorabilia ever since he met the ?King? in Las Vegas in the 1970s.

His partners in the purchase are New York lawyer Jim Gleason and UK-based jewelry maker Lisbeth Silvandersson.

Posted on andPOP:

Elvis may have left the building 28 years ago, but he?s still The King when it comes to bringing in the money, reports Billboard.

According to Forbes magazine?s annual list of Top-Earning Dead Celebrities, Elvis Presley was top earner for the fifth straight year.

His estate generated $45 million in royalties between October 2004 and October 2005.

“Peanuts” cartoonist Charles Schulz landed in his usual No. 2 spot, with $35 million.

Presley, who died in 1977, is enjoying enduring popularity through his music, but William Shakespeare is unbeatable when it comes to longevity.

The magazine calculated what the Bard?s heirs might take in each year if he were still under copyright, 400 years after his death, and estimated it at $15 million. Last year alone saw over 5,000 performances of his plays and hundreds of thousands of books sold.

This would put Shakespeare behind former Beatle John Lennon (No. 3 with $22 million) and artist Andy Warhol (No. 4 with $16 million) and ahead of actors Marlon Brando ($9 million) and Marilyn Monroe ($8 million).

Hollywood made its impact known on this year?s list, with Johnny Cash ($7 million) and Ray Charles ($6 million) breaking into the top rankings as the release or planned release of film biographies boosted their royalty statements.

Presley and the 12 other members of the list brought in a collective $186 million in the last year.

The fifth annual ranking, edited by Forbes.com Media Editor Peter Kafka, assesses the earning power of deceased celebrities, including musicians, actors, authors, songwriters and composers.

Top-earning dead celebrities, according to Forbes (figures are in millions of dollars):
1. Elvis Presley $45
2. Charles Schulz $35
3. John Lennon $22
4. Andy Warhol $16
5. Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel $10
6. Marlon Brando $9
7. Marilyn Monroe $8
8. J.R.R. Tolkien $8
9. George Harrison $7
10. Johnny Cash $7
11. Irving Berlin $7
12. Bob Marley $6
13. Ray Charles $6

Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel” came a close second in the poll on Friday to find the 100 top cultural moments in music, movies, TV and books, reports the BBC.

The survey for the new issue of U.K. magazine Uncut was voted on by musicians, actors and industry experts, led by Sir Paul McCartney.

The highest-ranking film on the list was Stanley Kubrick?s controversial ?A Clockwork Orange? (No. 5), followed by ?The Godfather? and ?The Godfather II? films in sixth place.

The top TV show was ?60s cult series ?The Prisoner? with Patrick McGoohan (No. 10), while the highest-ranking book was Jack Kerouac?s ?On The Road? (No. 19).

McCartney, Oasis? Noel Gallagher, Robert Downey Jr., Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones and Lou Reed were among those who gave their input for the poll.

Veteran rocker Patti Smith had high praise for the winning song, saying, ?I absolutely remember where I was when I first heard it. It got me through adolescence.?

Ex-Beatle McCartney chose ?Heartbreak Hotel? as his top pick.

?It?s the way (Presley) sings it as if he is singing from the depths of hell,? McCartney said. ?His phrasing, use of echo, it?s all so beautiful. Musically, it?s perfect.?

The Beatles? song ?She Loves Me? landed the No. 3 spot on the list, followed by ?(I Can?t Get No) Satisfaction? by The Rolling Stones.

Actors Edward Norton and Juliette Lewis and ex-Beach Boy Brian Wilson also participated in the survey, which marks the magazine?s 100th issue.

?It is sure to spark discussions,? said Uncut editor Allan Jones.

?This list has been a massive undertaking and considering which films have had a greater cultural impact than Bowie, for example, has fuelled many discussions.

“What we have been left with is Dylan as the most seminal artistic statement of the last five decades – but I’m sure others will disagree.”

Music, Films, TV and Books that ?Changed the World? (Source: Uncut magazine):

1. Bob Dylan ? ?Like a Rolling Stone?
2. Elvis Presley ? ?Heartbreak Hotel?
3. The Beatles ? ?She Loves You?
4. The Rolling Stones ? ?(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction?
5. ?A Clockwork Orange?
6. ?The Godfather? and ?The Godfather II?
7. David Bowie ? ?The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust?
8. ?Taxi Driver?
9. Sex Pistols ? ?Never Mind The Bollocks Here’s the Sex Pistols?
10. ?The Prisoner?
