Not too sure how reliable of a source US Magazine is sometimes, but they’re reporting star of The New Girl Zooey Deschanel is calling it quits with hubby Ben Gibbard after only 2 years of marriage. It’s kind of ironic her new show is about a young single woman trying to start over after a pretty nasty break-up.

This comes just one day after another gorgeous brunette, Kim Kardashian announces her split with Kris Humphries. Now, I’m sure Zooey and Ben had a real relationship, you know, one that wasn’t forced upon by executive producers, so the two must be in distraught right now.

Zooey and Ben got married in Seattle of ’09 and are now going through what sources call a “mutual and amicable” divorce.

It’s a real shame to see real marriages like these cut short. When Zooey and Ben first started dating, everyone expected them to last forever because they’re both quirky, have great taste in music (he leads Death Cab For Cutie, she fronts She and Him) and are great conversationalists, among many other reasons. They were a pretty private couple, so I don’t expect them to hold press conferences or write tell-all books — coughcough Kim Kardashian coughcough — about this heartbreaking ordeal.

Remember, when one marriage fails, a drunken rebound is just around the corner. And we’ll be there to report all about it.

Death Cab for Cutie Records Music Video Live Online

So this is pretty cool. Death Cab for Cutie plans the ambitious endeavor of shooting a music video for their single “You Are a Tourist” in one take, while being simulcast to the Web.

To make this project even more complex, the band plans a diverse/complex set of moves and visual effects for the shoot.

“It’s kind of hard to describe because it’s kind of like … I liken it to a 5-year-old trying to explain their trip to Disneyland,” frontman Ben Gibbard said to MTV. “It’s sensory overload, so there’s a lot of things happening, and trying to kind of walk anybody through it would be very difficult. But there are lights and dancers, and smoke and projections, and it’s gonna be kind of a little bit of a Busby Berkeley-type of spectacle.”

New Death Cab for Cutie Single: ‘You Are A Tourist’

The first single from Death Cab for Cutie’s upcoming ‘Codes and Keys’ album has been released.

‘You Are A Tourist’ is a light-hearted, upbeat sound that scraps the old reliance on acoustic guitar riffs that fans may be used to. Over a Cure-esque bass line and a guitar delay that brings to mind new-wave like Joy Division or New Order, Ben Gibbard warns “If there’s a burning in your heart, don’t be alarmed”.

The harmonies familiarize more with Gibbard’s side-project The Postal Service as he repeats: “This fire grows higher”.

Unlike songs from their 2008 album Narrow Stairs, the melancholy lyrics are backed by a hopeful chord arrangement. It definitely makes for a great morning song.

Over the marching of drums and orgasm of keyboards, Gibbard comforts the listener: “If you feel like a tourist in the city you’re born in, it’s time to go / and if find your destination, there’s so many different places to call home.”

Spin reported that the band will be kicking off a short North American trek May 18 in Toronto, wrapping it up about three weeks later. The Lonely Forest will open most of the tour, and Death Cab will play a few dates with Bright Eyes as well.

For those not able to make it to any of the shows, the Death Cab live experience will be released on a new live DVD: Live at the Mt. Baker Theatre that will be released on the same day as their new album. It will showcase performances from two shows that the band played in Bellingham, Washington back in April 2009. And yes, it was their old stomping grounds.

Want to see Death Cab for Cutie play a private show on your campus?

The band has teamed up with Rogers Wireless to present “Campus Battle ’09,” which is open to universities across Canada. The contest calls on students to vote on behalf of their school on Facebook, while Rogers Wireless customers can test “BATTLE” to 4869.

Voters at the winning school will then have their names entered into a draw to win a pair of tickets to a live concert featuring the indie-rock band in April.

Voting ends on March 1. For more details and to cast your vote, go to the contest’s Facebook page here.

Dalhousie University currently has a strong lead with more than 12 per cent of votes, while the University Of Windsor trails in second place with a little more than seven per cent.

Death Cab are playing shows in Japan and Australia this month and will follow up with a spring U.S. tour. No Canadian dates have been scheduled, other than the campus show.

Neil Young Teams Up With Death Cab, Wilco For Tour

Neil Young will hit the road for a North American tour this fall, with Death Cab For Cutie and Wilco in tow.

The iconic Canadian singer-songwriter will play at least eight Canadian cities during his tour, which kicks off Oct. 14 in St. Paul, MN, and ends Dec. 15 in New York.

Within the Canadian dates, indie rockers Death Cab will accompany Young for shows in Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary and Vancouver, while Wilco will bring their alt-country sound to Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.

Also on the bill are Los Angeles’ Everest, who previously opened for Young in Ireland, Holland and the U.K. They will support all dates on the upcoming tour.

Pre-sale tickets will be available as early as Thursday.

Young, a Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer, recently completed a three-month, 14-country European tour. His 30th and most recent studio album is “Chrome Dreams II,” which was released last October.

Meanwhile, Death Cab are backing their sixth studio album “Narrow Stairs,” which was released in May, while Wilco have been touring behind last year’s “Sky Blue Sky,” also their sixth studio release.

Everest, whose members came together after having worked with or been members of such bands as Sebadoh, The Folk Implosion, John Vanderslice and The Watson Twins, released their debut album “Ghost Notes” in May.

Death Cab, Wyclef To Play Voodoo Experience

A bevy of big-name acts have been added to the lineup at this year’s Voodoo Experience music festival, including Death Cab For Cutie, Wyclef Jean, Erykah Badu, Panic At The Disco, Joss Stone, Lupe Fiasco and Dashboard Confessional.

They will join previously announced headliners R.E.M., Nine Inch Nails and Stone Temple Pilots at City Park in New Orleans from Oct. 24 to 26.

According to Billboard.com, other acts who will take the stage include Tokyo Police Club, DeVotchKa, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Cold War Kids, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Joseph Arthur and Thievery Corporation.

The event will also feature many local acts spanning such genres as jazz, brass band and rock.

Now in its tenth year, the 2007 edition of Voodoo Experience brought out such performers as Rage Against The Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Wilco, Fall Out Boy, Common and Sinead O’Connor.

Death Cab For Cutie, Stars To Play Toronto Music Fest

Death Cab for Cutie is coming to Toronto’s Olympic Island.

The Bellingham, Wash., band will headline an outdoor music festival on the island June 7, along with Rogue Wave and Canadians Stars and Young Galaxy.

The event is being presented by ATG Concerts, RMS Concerts and Toronto radio station 102.1 The Edge.

Tickets will go on sale via Ticketmaster at noon on Thursday, and will be available at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern, Rotate This and Soundscapes on Friday.

The Olympic Island mini-concert extravaganza has attracted such acts as Modest Mouse, Sloan, Bloc Party and Broken Social Scene in previous years.

For those that can’t wait until June for their Death Cab fix, the band’s newest album “Narrow Stairs” will hit stores May 13. It is the follow-up to 2005′s “Plans,” which was nominated for a best alternative music album Grammy.

Stars are backing their fourth studio album “In Our Bedroom After The War,” which was released last September. The Montreal band will also be at Toronto’s Berkeley Church on Saturday to tape a concert for a television show called “Beautiful Noise.”

Young Galaxy, also based in Montreal, released their self-titled debut last April.

New Death Cab For Cutie Album Coming In May

Death Cab For Cutie have revealed details for their upcoming and hugely anticipated album “Narrow Stairs.”

The album, the follow-up to 2005′s Grammy-nominated “Plans,” will be released May 13, preceded by the single “I Will Possess Your Heart.”

“I hope this album is a bit of a surprise for those out there that think they have us all figured out,” said bassist Nick Harmer. “We can’t wait to share these songs with the world.”

“Narrow Plans” was produced by the band’s own guitarist-keyboardist Chris Walla, who has had a hand in producing and/or engineering albums by artists including the Decemberists and Canadians Tegan and Sara and Hot Hot Heat.

Walla also released a solo debut, “Field Manual,” on Jan. 29.

In anticipation of the new album, Death Cab will play their first live shows in more than 18 months when they head out on a handful of western U.S. tour dates, kicking things off April 18th in their home state of Washington.

The band will also play a couple of festivals, Coachella in Indio, California on April 26th and Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee on June 15th.

Death Cab For Cutie Guitarist Goes Solo

Chris Walla, one-quarter of Death Cab for Cutie, is currently working on a new solo project.

According to the website for Walla’s Hall of Justice recording studio, former DCFC label Barsuk Records will release the tentatively titled “It’s Unsustainable” in March 2007.

While Walla has one previous solo release — a self-titled cassette released under the moniker Martin Youth Auxiliary in 1999 — it’s not known what name he’ll use for this latest offering.

It’s also not known how far along he is with recording the record, though he says all the songs have been written. And in contrast with Death Cab’s usual emo-tinged fare, Walla says his record will have a “pretty dark political stripe.”

Death Cab and Franz Ferdinand Announce Co-Headlining Tour

Indie acts gone mainstream are now going cross-country. Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand are teaming up with Washington quartet Death Cab for Cutie for a co-headlining North American tour this spring.

Representatives for both bands’ labels officially announced plans for the “tour of which dreams are made” on Thursday. The shows will kick off in Portland, Ore. on March 22 before closing out on April 26 in Calgary, Alta.

No date has been announced yet for when tickets will go on sale, but it is epected to be sometime around Feb. 9 or 10.
