Robert Pattinson to Star in David Cronenberg’s ‘Cosmopolis’

As reported by TheWrap .com, Twilight heartthrob, Robert Pattinson is set to star in Toronto filmmaker, David Cronenberg’s new film, Cosmopolis.

The film is said to be a study of capitalism in a slightly futuristic metropolis. The film will star Pattinson playing Eric Packer, a young financial genius and risk taker who stakes his entire fortune on a dangerous trading day. The decision turns ugly and he becomes a possible assassination target during a 24-hour adventure through Manhattan. The film will also star Marion Cotillard and Paul Giamatti.

Cronenberg can be seen walking the streets of Toronto. Does this mean that Pattinson may too be walking them soon? Cronenberg has filmed in Toronto for the majority of his movies like Videodrome and Crash. Toronto is often used as a New York City stand in, so perhaps he will stay in Toronto to film Cosmopolis. One can only hope.

However, we may see a certain increase of paparazzi and screaming 13-year-old girls running around Toronto if word does get out that Pattinson is in town.

The TIFF Bell Lightbox Higher Learning Fridays

Yesterday morning David Cronenberg, director of cult classic Videodrome and Oscar nominated Eastern Promises, kicked off the TIFF Bell Lightbox’s Higher Learning Fridays series. Cronenberg was joined by his long time editor, Ronald Sanders.

Students were lead into a beautiful, majestic theatre where the program started with a screening of Videodrome (1983) and followed by a Q and A with Cronenberg and Sanders. The duo has a rare chemistry that is both humorous and enlightening. They spoke about their hardships on film sets and the technological advances that they have seen with the art of filmmaking while casually making cracks at each other.

The program is free for students attending secondary-education institutes. Students from universities all over Ontario came out for the unique event. The TIFF Bell Lightbox Higher Learning Fridays is an on-going series that will feature Canadian director, Jacob Tierney, composer, DJ Spooky, and many others.

The TIFF Bell Lightbox is an exciting new addition to Toronto. They are the home of the Toronto International Film Festival and now they are going on to host special programs and promote love for the cinema.

Polley’s Genie Magic

It’s safe to say that Sarah Polley had a magical night at the Genie Awards on Monday.

Polley won for best director and best adapted screenplay for her film, “Away From Her.” The film also received best picture, and its stars, Julie Christie, Gordon Pinsent and Kristen Thomson, won best actress, best actor and best supporting actress.

Polley, the one-time “Road to Avonlea” star, said that “The ridiculousness of me winning in this category is not lost on me,” as she accepted the award.

David Cronenberg’s “Eastern Promises” also won a slew of awards, though mostly for technical achievement.

International Press Recognize Canadian Films

The International Press Academy is honouring some of Canada’s best entertainers.

Acclaimed director David Cronenberg’s latest drama Eastern Promises got a nod for a Satellite Award for best motion picture, CBC reports.

The drama revolving around Russian mobsters, starring Naomi Watts and Viggo Mortensen, also grabbed a whopping six nominations. Cronenberg is up for best director and the film is being recognized for best screenplay, best score and best film editing.

Mortensen is in for a tough race for best actor, going up against Josh Brolin in No Country for Old Men and Denzel Washington in American Gangster.

Lovable Vancouver native, Knocked Up’s Seth Rogen, goes head-to-head with Canadian golden boy, Ryan Gosling, in the best actor in a comedy category, CBC reports.

Sarah Polley’s Away from Her also earned a few nominations including best picture category, best director and best adapted screenplay.

Fellow Canuck, Ellen Page, is nominated for best actress in a comedy for her breakout role in Juno.

The International Press Awards will be held in Los Angeles on Dec. 16.
