Filmdrunk is reporting some very exciting news this morning. Apparently, Warner Brothers has decided to release a new, revamped Lethal Weapon movie.
The movie franchise from the late 80′s to mid 90′s, that featured the most racist actor in history partnered up with Danny Glover, was a cult phenomenon and many even credit the Lethal Weapon franchise for spawning all future ‘buddy-buddy-action-comedy-cop-movies’. Blue Streak, Bad Boys, Rush Hour, The Other Guys, the list goes on and on, but it likely began with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. The new version however, may not feature the original duo.
The folks at Filmdrunk offer a brief explanation, with some colour commentary, over how this all came to be:
“Warner Bros
and producer Joel Silver have set Will Beall to write Lethal Weapon, with a take that will relaunch the buddy cop series with a new cast. Beall, a former LA police officer who patrolled South Central and wrote the novel L.A. Rex, has seen his stock rise at the studio because of his scriptGangster Squad, the period crime drama about an elite crime squad that fought against organized crime kingpins like Mickey Cohen. Zombieland helmer Ruben Fleischer has come aboard to direct that film.
Warner Bros has been messing around for some time with Lethal Weapon 5, with a treatment written by original scribe Shane Black. The plan was to bring the original team back, but schedules didn’t match up and Mel Gibson’s image has taken a self-inflicted beating [much like my wang -ed]. Beall pitched a take that maintains the tone of the original–a hard R-rated edgy street cop movie.”.
My fingers are crossed. You?
Danny Glover found himself in some hot water during a Niagara Falls labour rally in September 2006 and now the veteran actor- best known for his role in the Lethal Weapon franchise- has been convicted of trespassing.
Glover was not there to hear the guilty verdict called out in a provincial court in Niagara Falls last week. He will be sentenced on Feb. 8, CBC News reports.
The 61-year-old actor-turned-labour activist took part in a rally at the Sheraton on the Falls hotel on Sept. 16. To support hotel union leaders in their fight for better working conditions and higher salaries.
Glover was protesting alongside Unite Here, a union that represents 450,000 hotel workers in North America.
The Unite Here co-director and the president of the Ontario Federation of Labour were arrested with Glover at the rally and have also been convicted.
Movie stars Daryl Hannah and Danny Glover have taken up the cause of protesting the proposed destruction of the South Central Farm, E! Online reports.
The 14 acre farm in Southern Los Angeles is owned by Ralph Horowitz, who wants to develop the property. Currently, the farm allows 360 farmers to plant rare fruits and vegetables.
Horowitz offered to sell 10 acres of the land to a non profit group for just over $16 million, but the group came up $10 million short. He ordered the eviction of the farmers, and protestors have since set up camp.
Glover urged the protestors not to adhere to the eviction order, while Hannah has set up camp on the property.
Other celebs that have given their support to the cause include Leonardo DiCaprio, Ed Harris, Rosanna Arquette and Martin Sheen.
