Fred Ewanuick’s Canadian Rise to Stardom

Posted by Graham Slaughter on March 1st, 2010

Fred Ewanuick is just happy to have his own TV.

The Canadian actor, best known for his role as Hank Yarbo in Corner Gas, has been spending the past few weeks in his own private, fully-equipped chalet in Whistler.

“I’m like in heaven. I don’t have cable at home.”

Ewanuick, 42, scored his Rocky Mountain pad when he was selected by the Vancouver Olympic Committee (VANOC) to host the Olympic Victory Ceremonies in Whistler: a set of live performances each evening starring some of the world’s top acts.

“It’s such a blast. I think they said that the capacity is 8000, and we’ve been at capacity every night.”

Ewanuick has introduced artists such as Feist, The All-American Rejects, K’naan, Estelle, Usher, and The Fray. However, Ewanuick argues that some of the best music comes from the Olympic fans.

‘Corner Gas’ Star Has ‘Hiccups’

Posted by andPOP Staff on October 3rd, 2008

“Corner Gas” isn’t over yet, but the show’s star, Brent Butt, already has a new project in motion.

The actor has agreed to create a pilot called “Hiccups”—but this time, he won’t be in front of the camera.

Butt will act as the creator, writer, show runner and executive producer for the new half-hour comedy series. His wife and “Corner Gas” co-star, Nancy Robertson, will be the show’s lead.

Robertson will play Millie Upton, a children’s author who has fits of depression, rage, and euphoric highs. In the show, she hires a life coach to help her with her anger management issues.

Shooting for “Hiccups” begins in Vancouver later this month. The show will air on CTV and Comedy Central.

“Corner Gas” wraps up for good after this season.

Corner Gas To End In 2009

Posted by andPOP Staff on April 11th, 2008

Corner Gas will pump out its last laughs in spring 2009.

Show star and creator Brent Butt announced the CTV comedy will come to end after its sixth season, which is currently in production.

The decision to end the show was Butt’s–not CTV’s.

“It’s a very difficult decision, but the right decision, and one I felt I had to make,” said Butt.

“When I told CTV about my decision, they made it clear they were keen to do more seasons. But for the good of the show, I wanted to exit gracefully, on top of our game, when we’re at our prime–because that’s how I want viewers to remember Corner Gas: at its very best.”

The show has won six Gemini Awards, including best comedy series.

Corner Gas is shot in Saskatchewan and aired its first episode in 2004.

Stephen Harper’s Acting Debut?

Posted by andPOP Staff on August 29th, 2006

Looks like Stephen Harper may be getting his acting debut.

No, it won’t be on “This Hour has 22 Minutes,” “The Royal Canadian Air Farce,” or “The Mercer Report,” or any other CBC show, this time it’s on a real sitcom – “Corner Gas.”

Canadian Press reports that according to the CBC, the Prime Minister will be filming scenes for the show while he is in Regina, though neither “Corner Gas” execs, nor the Prime Minister’s office, will confirm the rumours.

But, Canadian Press adds, “they wouldn’t deny it either.”

If Harper does do a cameo, he will be the second PM to do so. His predecessor – Paul Martin – did a cameo on the CTV show.

PM Paul Martin Guest Stars on Corner Gas

Posted by andPOP Staff on November 3rd, 2005

Canada’s Prime Minister Paul Martin made a cameo appearance on Monday’s episode of Corner Gas.

The episode started with Martin making a mock address to the Canadian public, only to be interrupted by Corner Gas actor Brent Butt asking what the PM was doing.

“I’m speaking to the nation, I’m addressing Canada,” Martin said.

Butt asked the prime minister if he had to do it right then — saying CTV’s Corner Gas is given just half an hour of TV time each week.

“But what about my message?” Martin asked.

“You can do a mass e-mailing,” Butt replied. “You can ‘cc’ the nation.”

“You know, I like the way you think,” Martin said.

Butt then suggested that the prime minister could “make me minister of something.”

Martin taped his appearance during the summer in Regina.
