If The Coachella 2012 Line Up Were Honest

Posted by @coltondaniel on January 14th, 2012

With Coachella-mania in full effect, it’s time to face the facts. The eclectic festival has gone from something beautiful to a marketing scheme. It should be noted that the two weekend-long festival sold out in less than 3 hours.

There are a few obvious jabs at the REAL Coachella line-up in this clever meme – and I’m personally psyched to see People Over 30 and Trying Desperately To Appear Culturally Relevant make their big comeback. The nineties feel so long ago.

Coachella Festival To Expand To Two Weekends In 2012

Posted by Christian Allaire on May 31st, 2011

Coachella, one of the most popular music festivals of the year, will be expanded over two weekends in 2012, reports Billboard.

The newly-expanded festival will be held over two consecutive weekends at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. The festival will apparently “attempt to produce two identical weekends” with the same lineup and locations.

On Coachella’s website, organizers say high demand and the rise of counterfeit tickets are the reason behind the expansion.

“We know many of you were unable to attend this year’s festival because passes sold out much sooner than anticipated. We were truly surprised by the overwhelming response and remain honored by your passion and enthusiasm. We also know some of you purchased through non-legitimate sources and were inconvenienced, gouged or totally scammed. We hope that these changes will give everyone the opportunity to purchase directly from Coachella.com.”

Rightfully so. This year’s festival, which ran from April 15 to 17, sold out in a week, leaving many fans avidly pissed. Performers included the Strokes, Robyn and Kanye West, among others.

The price for a three-day pass to the 2012 festival will be $269 plus fees. Weekend passes go on sale beginning this Friday, June 3, at 10 a.m. PT. You won’t want to miss it!

Kanye West Comes to Life At Coachella

Posted by @coltondaniel on April 22nd, 2011

In the spirit of the season, Kanye West resurrected himself at this year’s Coachella festival where he dazzled thousands as they felt the vibe and threw their diamonds in the sky.

Split into three acts, his historical set started off with “Dark Fantasy” from his latest album as he was erected on a crane from the middle of the hyper-charged audience while a few dozen dancers went wild. The set truly showcased the different sides of Yeezy: the ego-maniac, the genius and the emotional mamma’s boy. Between the appearance from Bon Iver and the artistically orchestrated choreography, Kanye proved his showmanship is considerably this generation’s Freddie Mercury in the way that he captivates the crowd’s response.

Rather than the typical hip-hop concert, Kanye turned the show into a concerto. From the imagery to the choreography, the fireworks to the lighting, the show appeared to be a masterpiece of art.

The 90-minute set included a wide assortment of his catalogue, from hits like “Jesus Walks”, “Flashing Lights”, “Runaway”, “Good Life”, “Gold Digger” and “Stronger” ended with a sentimental dedication to his late mother and closed the brilliant set out with “Hey Mama”.

Watch the the first half of the set here. Hunt down the rest on YouTube… Or if you have a few hundred, check him out at the Museum of Modern Art’s Garden Party on May 10th.

Lineups Announced for Coachella, Bonnaroo

Posted by andPOP Staff on February 2nd, 2006

The moment music fans have been waiting for has arrived. Lineups for North America’s two largest music festivals were announced this week, with big names in store for both Coachella and Bonnaroo.

Headlining the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this year in Indio, Calif. is ’80s act Depeche Mode, currently making a U.S. comeback after several years off the charts.

The band is an appropriate choice for the two-day festival, known for its edgy, hipster appeal. Depeche Mode are slotted in to open on Saturday, April 29 while rockers Tool will close out on Sunday. It will be Tool’s first performance in the U.S. since 2002.

More than 80 bands will take to Empire Polo Fields over the weekend, including Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, James Blunt, Damian Jr. Gong Marley, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Scissor Sisters, Common, and Bloc Party.

Tickets for the event, which also features art installations, go on sale Feb. 4 at noon PST, for $85 a day or $165 for a two-day pass. On-site camping passes will also be available for purchase through Ticketmaster.

Meanwhile, the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, set for June 16-18 in Manchester, Tenn. is putting the spotlight on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and UK band Radiohead.

The event will mark Radiohead’s only U.S. summer festival appearance. Bonnaroo promoter Ashley Capps of A.C. Entertainment told the Tennessean on Tuesday, “We’re very excited to have Radiohead be a part of the festival this year–we’ve been in discussions with them literally for two and a half years.”

Also playing at the fest are Phil Lesh & Friends, Beck, Bonnie Raitt, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, The Neville Brothers, and Buddy Guy, just to name a few.

This year’s lineup marks a shift for Bonnaroo from the jam bands they were known for towards more mainstream and indie rock acts. “From the beginning we’ve always tried to reflect people’s music collections,” said Jonathan Mayers, president of Superfly Presents, co-promoters with A.C. Entertainment.

“People have diverse musical tastes and that’s what we’re trying to showcase with our programing. While we’re not trying to get too far away from our core, Bonnaroo has been a great platform to introduce different music to our fans.”

Mayers added that more bands would be announced as the event draws closer. Meanwhile, fans will be able to snag tickets beginning Saturday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. EST through Bonaroo.com.
