Caroline Rhea Talks Weight Loss and Dating Gay Men

Posted by andPOP Staff on October 31st, 2006

If you think you’re witty and good with one liners, you’ve got nothing on actress/comedienne Caroline Rhea.

“I feel like we’re about to take over a company I’ve never been in a conference call like this,” she says after introductions are done during an interview last week.

Rhea was a star on the hit show “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” which starred Melissa Joan Hart. She also had her own talk show for a few years. She currently is the host of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” and had a comedy special – “Rhea’s Anatomy” – which aired on Bravo in the US on Oct. 31.

When asked if she was going to dress up like a witch, due to the character of Aunt Hilda she portrayed on “Sabrina.”

“The first year on Sabrina I dressed up as a witch and I scared the hell out of this little kid in my sister’s building,” Rhea said, adding that she is sure people will associate her with that show for the rest of her life.

“I will be eternally grateful for that.”

When asked if being host on “The Biggest Loser” has inspired her to stay away from candy, Rhea laughs out loud.

“You know what makes me laugh, everyones like have you lost weight? And I’m like do you thking Jeff Probst has ever eaten a bug in his life? I try,” she says, saying that her inspiration comes after watching episodes of the weight loss reality show.

Rhea’s personal weight loss success comes from Weight Watchers, and she says that she mentions the topic of weight loss because it’s something that everyone talks about and an issue where a lot of comedy comes out.

But she has learned at least two things from “The Biggest Loser” about weight lost.

“One: you can see that scale from space; and two: and that I say this as a joke, people always say like it’s pilates or whatever (that made them lose weight), and I always say people should lose weight the old fashioned way on television, divided in teams.”

Rhea said the reality show was pitched to her much differently than it ended up turning out. She said originally it was going to be more like a talk show, and less of a reality show. When she first heard the title, she didn’t like it very much, but through the seasons, she has come to embrace it.

“The title doesn’t really bother me anymore because the contestants are who I really care about and they are so happy by the end of it, they really want to be the biggest loser,” she said.

Rhea adds she never listened to the negative press that ran before the show premiered, which speculated the show was being derogatory toward heavy people.

“At the end of the day if 12 people are healther at the end of the year than they were six months before, thats not bad that’s great. Now, people come up to me and tell me how much weight they’ve lost,” she said.

Rhea began as a stand up comedienne, and has continued doing stand up, even while she starred on “Sabrina” (adding that she often had to tone down her act for the kids that came to the show).

As well as the topic of weightloss, Rhea’s special also talked about dating gay men, something she has personal experience with.

“I have dated many men who I have had a catalytic effect on which was: going out with Caroline made me realize I love Bob,” she jokes.

“My first boyfriend is a gay activist in toronton now and I feel really responsible (for his outing)…yeah it’s the last stop on outsville, going out with Caroline.”

The season finale of “The Biggest Loser” airs next month on NBC.
