Jamie Lidell Interview on Side B – Embracing Natural Chaos

Posted by Dan Busheikin on June 28th, 2010

Jamie Lidell has released yet another genre-bending album, but it sounds a little rougher this time around. Perhaps that can be partially attributed to Beck, who, after collaborating with Jamie for his Record Club project (google it!), encouraged and helped produce his latest LP “Compass”. Jamie discussed embracing sonic rawness, and spoke to us about some of the other allstars that helped with this latest record.

Beck Responds to Fiery Furnaces Jab With New Song

Posted by Sara Harowitz on November 19th, 2009

BeckBeck has responded to the comments made by The Fiery Furnaces’ Matt Friedberger by writing a song, according to nme.com.

In the original attack, Friedberger jabbed at alternative band Radiohead, calling them “bogus” for releasing a song about the last surviving British World War I veteran, Harry Patch.

It later became clear that Friedberger could have misinterpreted the song, confusing the war hero Harry Patch with the experimental music composer Harry Partch. But instead of letting the whole charade just blow over, Friedberger chose to continue the feud by then taking a stab at alternative singer Beck.

Thom Yorke and Flea Join Forces

Posted by Emma Renda on October 7th, 2009

Thom YorkeSimply uttering Thom Yorke’s name in a news release is often enough to make music bloggers and listeners the world over froth a little with excitement. But this latest news from the prolific Radiohead frontman is enough to incite hysterics.

Yorke has announced a supergroup side-project with Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which seems to be enough talent and spunk as is. But where there’s smoke, there’s fire, so where there’s Yorke, there’s Radiohead’s long-time producer Nigel Godrich. And heck, why not throw in Beck and R.E.M.’s drummer Joey Waronker? After all.

The project is yet unnamed, but the group took the stage this weekend in what Yorke called a “public rehearsal” at Los Angeles’ Echoplex for a blistering set of showmanship to a very lucky exclusive audience. The set was packed with the entirety of Yorke’s first solo effort, 2006′s The Eraser, flourishing under the care of his new backing band, according to Pitchfork’s Ian Cohen (lucky bastard). Yorke played four new songs solo, “Open the Floodgates”, “Lotus Flower”, “Skirting on the Surface”, and “Judge, Jury, Executioner” and then brought the band back for a few hits off Radiohead’s Com Lag EP as well as their new song, “Super Collider”.

Thom Yorke’s New Crew

Posted by Stephen Baldwin on September 29th, 2009

Thom YorkeThe Radiohead frontman has put together a band to tour for his 2006 solo project “The Eraser” and his newer solo tracks, Muchmusic.com reports.
Yorke’s band will include Red Hot Chilli Peppers bass guitarist Flea, former Smashing Pumpkins and Beck drummer Joey Waronker, Forro in the Dark musican Mauro Refosco, and Beck, Travis and Radiohead producer Nigel Godbrich.

On Radiohead’s website, Thom Yorke said the nameless super group will play two shows on October 4th and 5th at the Orpheum theatre in Los Angeles. “the set will not be very long cuz ..well …we haven’t got that much material yet!”, said Yorke in his post on the site. Radiohead announced in August that they will no longer making albums as a group, but they may continue to make individual songs and he will continue to pursue his solo projects. His latest solo track, “Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses”, has all the rhythm and temp that Radiohead songs usually pack, along with the distinctly soft yet strong vocals of Thom Yorke. The song was even placed on Kanye West’s blog and Facebook page, even after the Radiohead frontman reportedly snuffed West at the Grammys when the rapper – an admirer of Yorke – requested to meet him.

Beck Gets Danger-ous

Posted by Eva Lam on March 8th, 2008

Beck is teaming up with Danger Mouse, one half of Gnarls Barkley, for his new album.

Danger Mouse, whose real name is Brian Burton, will produce Beck’s follow-up to 2006′s “The Information.”

It’s been confirmed that the producer and the singer-songwriter, both based in L.A., have started work on the upcoming album.

Danger Mouse first rose to fame in 2004 when he remixed Jay-Z’s “Black Album” with The Beatles’ classic “White Album” to create “The Grey Album.”

The busy producer recently produced The Black Keys’ fifth full-length LP “Attack & Release,” which comes out April 1. Other artists he’s worked with include Gorillaz, The Rapture and Sparklehorse.

Gnarls Barkley’s second album, “The Odd Couple,” hits stores April 8.

According to a post on his website, Beck Hansen has finished work on his next studio album and will release the as-yet-untitled disc this fall. No official street date has been set for the record, but it comes only a year-and-a-half after his last LP, “Guero,” hit stores.

High-Tech ‘Dream Robots’ Dance for Beck

Posted by Eva Lam on November 13th, 2005

Humans aren?t the only ones who can?t resist Beck?s music.

In the singer-songwriter?s video for ?Hell Yes,? the world?s only ?dream robots? do a synchronized dance routine to his new single.

Called QRIOs, they are currently the only four working robots of their kind in the world and were developed by Sony Japan as high-tech playthings for children.

The QRIO can carry on conversations, adapt to a variety of environments and mimic human movements, including complex dance routines.

?They’re not due for three or four years, but we were able to get them for the video thanks to the good people of Sony Japan,? director Garth Jennings told MTV.

?They have such an unbelievably fluid range of motions, so Beck and I just had to work out an elaborately choreographed number for them. I think it took the programmers in Japan about three weeks to program the routine into each robot.?

According to Jennings, who also directed this year?s big-screen adaptation of Douglas Adams’ ?The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy,? Beck had been mulling over the video treatment for more than a year, but it took quite a bit of wrangling to actually land the robots.

?They ended up bringing the robots to us, and we shot them in one afternoon in Los Angeles,? Jennings said. ?Most of the people who have seen the video come away thinking that there’s no way the QRIOs are real. They think they’re like people in robot suits or something.?

The robots, who are just under two feet tall, perform the dance routine in front of what appears to be a room full of reporters. Beck himself appears briefly in the video, floating as a ghostly hologram above the QRIOs, according to MTV.

In other Beck news, Billboard.com reports that the artist is set to perform at VH1?s Big in ?05 Awards, along with Def Leppard and INXS.

The show, hosted by comedian D.L. Hughley, will premiere Dec. 4 on the music network.

Beck to Tour North America, Open for The Rolling Stones this Fall

Posted by Eva Lam on August 9th, 2005

Beck has announced plans for a North American tour this fall in support of “Guero,” nearly five months after the album’s release.

The genre-defying musician will kick off the tour Sept. 19 in Minneapolis and wrap up Oct. 8 in Camden, N.J., reported Billboard Tuesday.

In between, Beck will open three shows for The Rolling Stones: Sept. 24 in Columbus, Ohio; Sept. 26 in Toronto; and Oct. 1 in Hershey, Pa.

The singer-songwriter is also slated to play as one of four headlining acts (alongside Oasis, The Killers and The Pixies) at the inaugural Across the Narrows Festival, which descends upon Brooklyn and Staten Island, N.Y. on Oct. 1-2.

Tickets for Beck?s North American tour go on sale Saturday through Ticketmaster.com.

Opening acts are expected to be announced shortly.

To date, Beck has supported his latest Interscope release with West Coast shows, impromptu jam sessions and a headlining gig at Japan?s Fuji Rock Festival. Even without the aid of a full-blown tour, ?Guero? debuted at a career-best No. 2 on The Billboard 200 and has already sold more than 623,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

?Guero? is officially Beck?s 10th full-length release. Two previous albums, ?Odelay? and ?Mellow Gold,? made SPIN magazine?s 100 Greatest Albums list in June.

Here are Beck’s tour dates:
